Brosnan and Craig two sides of the same coin

Don't judge that last one till you read it!
1)like it
2)like it
3) curious to read it.
:D I can see the paralel between the movies(first three at least). Both "firsts" were directed by Campbell. The "seconds" were directed by action directors(Forster is an action director, right??) and the "thirds" were directed by "character" directors.

The Brosnan era is criticized for poor writing, but in my opinion, the writing in the Craig era has not been any better. When you take a closer look beyond all the artsy fartsy fluff and character studies, the films aren't really the intelligent and Oscar worthy masterpieces as many claim them to be. The Spectre leaks further prove this point.

GoldenEye is considered Brosnan's best, while his other Bond films haven't held up as well. From what I've observed so far, this also seems to be the case with Craig and Casino Royale, although we'll have to wait and see how things turn out.

If anything Craig movie are the ones with poor writing.Skyfall is a mish-mash of MI,Batman,Bourne and Home Alone(a head of MI6 hidden in a house with no protection-someone raped my inteligence) and there were also some elements of GE and TWINE.
CR was very poorly written-the love story *deskfacepalm*
And I don't remember a thing from QOS so I guess that tells you all...at least there was a name Strawberry Fields.
When it comes to Brosnan films TND was filmed without a finished script and appearantly new pages were delivered on the set ever day. It's actually amazing how the movie ended up being decent-showing out that all those Bond tropes are still "cool".
I read TWINE also went through several rewrites-appearently Apted's wife helped writing the script-nepotism??? Anyway,I still wanna know who the heck thought that happy ending would work. The movie plays a bit of like a Shakespeare's play.
As for DAD...well the script earns the credit for calling Bond movies for being post-colonial fantasies. "It's pathetic",the villain remarks"You British still think you rule the world."
It's true. Bond is fantasy of a dying empire played out. Julius No in the very first movie called Bond a spy with "the habits of an empire".
Also the script tries to make the villain mirror Bond just like Travelyan did that.
The villain says he made his "new image" by Bond. That he paid attention on small things. "The snark attitude","Cocky demanour" etc...
I also like the exchange between Bond and villain
"But he died chasing a dream, isn't that a way to go?"
"You don't seem to chase your dreams, you live in them."
If one remembers correctly Bond said in GE that the words he lives by are "enjoy, while you still can"
I really like touches like that-and the idea that Bond and the villain are more similar than Bond likes to think.
But in DAD that gets lost among all the crazy stuff...

I must thank you all for the kind words! I honesty had no idea I had so many rabid fans!

When I started this thread a year and a half ago I was afraid I'd be preaching to the choir, repeating myself and others over and over without adding to the conversation, perhaps I still am, but at least you're all enjoying it!

Whilst I don't always agree with everything you say (no two people ever agree with each other 100%, unless one of them is a complete yes-man), you often put my thoughts into words far more eloquently than I do. Cheers, Benny.

WOW! I really am quite flattered!

And Kris, at the risk of turning this in to a "love fest" I must say I'm glad I can count you as one of my "fans" as I respect your opinion, like you say we don't always 100% see eye to eye, but your opinions are always measured, and well thought out without resorting to excess emotion as I am sometimes prone to do.

GE is not only Pierce's best Bond but also his last great actioner (or even his last great on-screen work in his entire career) to the general moviegoers.

I think Brosnan was better in TND. He was as smarmy as he was in other films, and physically (short and differently styled hair) , he looks better. TND also looks better. GE looks grey and rough around the edges, but TND looks like every penny was spent.

I also think TND was better and looks better, and is more like a Bond film should be (although it was mostly a tired rehash of earlier Bonds in terms of story and ideas).

GE looks like kitchen sink realism compared to TND, not exactly how a Bond film should be.

Could it be that around this time (early to mid 90s) the "grungy look" was very fashionable in popular music and perhaps in films as well?

Those who are old enough should remember the grungy video for Nirvana's Smells like Teen Spirit, one of the songs that kicked off the grungy era of rock music.

I find GoldenEye sort of has an 80s feel to it, which I don't mind. The characters are a big part of why I enjoy the film, and I think the overall tone and balance was just right. The Bond films afterwards I found to be either meh or unenjoyable, but I've never really been the biggest fan of the modern Bonds anyway. No offence to those that are, though.

Hm, what's 80s about GE :?:

Here is a scene from GE, I could only find it with french dub but check out how grungy it all looks, and there are many similar looking scenes in the film (although there are a few elegant scenes as well of course).

"James Bond, charming sophisticated secret agent. Shaken, but not stirred." Zukovsky just defined Bond with that sentence. :D

I never hated his other films, I like TWINE better than TND, and DAD. GE would take the tops, although I do wish they could redo the score.

GoldenEye is kind of a bridge film. It has a bit of an 80s feel with the pre-title sequence set in the 80s, the Cold War legacy and the outcome of that period, and even the look, but it has enough of the 90s to feel different from the 80s Moore and Dalton Bonds.

I kinda think that score was like that because the movie represented Bond as man out of time who needs to adjust to the new world. While TND had the classic Bond score because that movie was about all the Bond tropes and showed how they can still work in the "new" world...

At the risk of sounding too gracious I would like to thank you all for the wonderful encouragement, it has caused me to do as Moore says to Stromberg in TSWLM and "redouble my efforts". This is made all the more sweeter in that it has come from some of my favorite posters on this site! Any way enough of my good feelings and let me get to what you all are waiting for...
