Bottom line, it under performed CR, and no spinning it, Eon got swelled heads over Craig and thought a blockbuster would emerge in his second film, and were proven wrong. MGM, NOT MGW, will have a HUGE say in who is Bond in the next film. There probably will be a 3 year hiatus now with these less than stellar profits. The international market was more telling than the USA markets, which did surprise me.
You are correct when you state that "Eon got swelled heads". Casino Royale received some good critical reviews and did well at the box office. Instead of churning out another routine Bond, Eon and Sony tried to make a big budget critically acclaimed masterpiece to follow Casino Royale.

Quantum of Solace has not flopped. But overall it must have been very disappointing for Eon and Sony.

I hope so. Disappointing enough to push them to make Bond 23 better, anyway. I'd hate for them to think that they can churn out any old s**t and people will still go to see it. Though to their credit, EON didn't take that message from DAD or MR, so there's reason for optimism.

Craig was promoting Defiance this morning on the Today Show during a Matt Lauer piece. When asked about the next Bond film, Craig stated that it will probably be 6 months before he sits down with producers to discuss where they want to go with the next Bond film. He might not realize that behind the scenes MGM big shots might be crunching the numbers of TBM as well as reviewing his numerous poor reviews worldwide and in 6 months make an even bigger decision. In any case, forget about 2010 for the next film.

BJ, you do realise Brozza's second film had a bigger profit loss than QoS, right...?

To quote cusading saint, who seems to know his onions....
The Man with the Golden Gun's gross was down almost 40% on Live and Let Die (!)
Licence To Kill's gross was down 20% on The Living Daylights
Tomorrow Never Die's gross was down 5% on Goldeneye
Quantum of Solace's (projected) gross will be down around 3% on Casino Royale

So Craig's doing pretty well in comparison . The only actor to avoid that is Sean Connery. And, as I mentioned, the budget hike for this film was nowhere near the hike between GE and TND, so...

More money was spent on TBM than any other Bond film, correct Sweenster? You also know your onions. Why was this amount spent on Craig? Could it have been the arrogance of Eon's ego that his second film would do better than all the other Bonds due to the world's infatuation with a deviant, thuggish, Bond action figure with no personality whatsoever? I still do not know where the $230 million was spent, do you? Do you want to see Craig in a standard Bond film? Not you I would bet. He is now tytpecast as a lone renegade and Haggis' reputation for originality for Bond is one and done.

I'm not entirely sure where the money was spent either. The amazing stunts performed on this film were lost among the muddled editing. But I guess the money is all releative anyway. How much would the money be worth that was spent on QoS, adjusted for inflation compared to other Bond flicks in the past?

Will Bond 23 be another case of TSWLM, Moore's third movie? TMWTGG was a flop, yet they managed to somehow re-generate interest again by Moore's third film....

Daniel Craig: 'I need a break from Bond'

A tired Daniel Craig has admitted that he wants to take as long a break as possible before playing James Bond again.

Asked how long it will be before the next movie is filmed, the 007 star said: "Hopefully not too soon."

"Probably in the next six months we'll be getting back together and figuring out what we want to do."

In the meantime, he said what he really wanted to do before that was "more lying down on beaches".

I want to lie on a beach for the first half hour of the next movie, drinking a cocktail

It's no wonder he wants a break - during the gruelling shoot for Quantum of Solace, Craig sliced the tip of his finger off, injured his ribs and also needed several stitches after a cut to his face.

He also joked that he wanted the next Bond film to be less action-packed.

“I want to lie on a beach for the first half hour of the next movie, drinking a cocktail,” he told a newspaper.

Craig's certainly been making the most of his Bond-free beach time - he was spotted last month in St Barts enjoying a holiday with his girlfriend Satsuki Mitchell.

The hunk was snapped there receating the infamous beach scene from Casino Royale where he emerges from the water in just his trunks.

Craig is signed on to do two more Bond films after playing the womanising spy in Casino Royale and Quantum of Solace.

Writers are due to be hired this month to start work on the next 007 movie, which is tentatively set for release in 2011.

He seemed ambivalent on the Daily Show about whether he is even coming back for Bond 23. He said something like "I'm going to take a break for a while and then...we'll see". No, I'm not going to turn into BJ and start predicting his imminent replacement with Hugh Jackman, but it sounds like his doing another Bond film is not quite the sure thing I thought it was.

He was also on Matt Laurer's programs and said that he'll take a break and then come back to EON in a couple of months to talk about the next film. I believe this confirms MGW's comments about wanting to take a break.

I guess it's really gonna be a 2011 release. Will it be Summer or Fall? Early news said Bond 23 was originally supposed to be a Summer 2010 but since they've got no director or script it was postponed.

When was the last time we had a summer Bond release? I'm thinking the '80s, but I could be wrong.

LTK was the last time a Bond film was released in the Summer. The reason every film since GE was released during Fall is because of the horrible performance of LTK. However, I believe that slump had more to do with audiences feeling exausted and disinterest at the time with Bond, not the competition it faced. Had any of the films since GE had Summer releases I think would have done fine if not better. I think Bond is healthy enough to get back to Summer and be able to take advantage of the opportunities that Fall releases don't offer.

Interestingly, because of the poor performance of Star Trek V in the Summer of 89, every film since then has only been released during the Fall season. Except this time they're releasing the new film on May, showing that they've gained confidence that a Trek film could perform well. Hopefully EON gains confidence in the Bond film's potential. Mostly I prefer a Summer release over a Fall is because it'll come around sooner.

Funny, I could have sworn I saw LTK in late November/early December. But I'll believe you, since my memory is not that reliable, especially for something that happened nearly 20 years ago (eek  )

Interesting...but after QOS it *would* be beneficial for everyone involved with the Bond films-especially the producers and Craig himself-to a) take some time off and b) think through the plot. etc. for the new Bond film.

The tremendous amount of negative reviews for TBM may have affected Craig. Let's hope so and he realizes to further perpetuate this sham on the public is not good for what is left of his career. He does not belong in this role any longer and hopefully MGM will tell MGW and Barbara what is needed.

The "tremendous amount of negative reviews" still mostly praised Craig, so in what way will that affect him? While I admit that QOS was a disappointment, you seem to exagerrate every little thing as if QOS was the biggest disaster ever. Craig's not going anywhere BJ. You're just gonna have to get used to that, you can't keep your head in the sand for so long. If Hugh Jackman is really going to get a phone call from EON, it's most they'll tell him "sorry, you still don't get the part". :P

Why exactly? Are the Bond films really that tiring or cumbersome for some actors? So we might not see a new Bond film till 2011 or 2012?

If they're regrouping, that way be a good thing, though not exactly popular with Bond fans...OTOH that's 2 or 3 years worth of bad non-Bond films from Craig

Owen or Purefoy would be acceptable. Owen coming out in February with a new flick he looks good in. Any one of these 3 would excel over Craig.

Owen's got that movie with Naomi Watts coming out which seems very Bond-like, and a comedy sort of thing with Julia Roberts.
