I know alot of fans love that scene, but I hate it. It's crap. Okay so it's not bad Bond, infact Pierce is quite good, but to have a cartoon character to play alongside ruins any sense of tension or drama imo.
Kauffman is basically a foolish character, a paid assassin of Carvers. It's lines like
"I could shoot you from stuttgart and still create the proper effect." or
"Arggghhhh Stamper stop yelling in my ear ya." That let it all down.
Gritty, maybe in some peoples eyes. To me, it's just not that good a scene at all.
A far better scene, that Brosnan plays well is when he's sat in his hotel. Drinking shots of vodka, walther at his side, awaiting Carvers goons. That's Bond, and Brosnan was good when he was allowed to.
Another gritty Brosnan scene (
imo) is when he's in the bankers office at the start of TWINE, I feel again Pierce gives us his James Bond, instead of Pierce Brosnan giving us a cross between Connery and Moore...but playing it more like the latter for the most part. Even the begining of DAD when he's taken to the DMZ to be shott,he shows of Bondian characteristics, and plays it well. Only to be let free because of the trade with Zao. After that all the tension goes out the window.
But there are many times during Pierce's time as Bond that he played Bond. To bad that he wasn't allowed to more often, because imo he was a good Bond, who was popular with fans and the general public alike for the most part. But then I'd say the same is true of Daniel Craig, though I know one or two people who might disagree with me.
