A few notes....

Post by pakua4581 »

Hi all,

This will be my first post here,Ive been skulking around the various Bond Forums for a bit and decided to sign up here :D

The funniest moment in Casino Royale:

This had to be the so called "torture" scene,it was "painfully" obvious, that neither the Script Writer, the Director or the Actor (DC) were ever in their life struck in the "golden jewels"!! it is painful as it is to be struck a glancing blow, but to be struck directly with a lithe object, thats another story altogether, you would not be reverting with witticisms like"scratch my left B*ll " etc, your body and mind would go into shutdown, also no Soldier /spy/tough guy who is already in a very vulnerable position goad his tormentor on with sarcasm, thats why you have the "name-rank-serial number" litany,to make you "hold on" and focus through the pain and not give anything away and at the same time not enrage your torturer more.......absolute malarky!!!

Daniels Height:

Here I would defend his height,he is 5'11,an inch shorter than the Bond of the novels. The height is realistic as the maximum height for a spy in the field is ideally 6'0 and not above, otherwise you would stand out in a crowd,if you have "movie star" looks and are above 6'0 then you would definately stick out like a sore thumb.

Why the new Bond is "Blond and Pug":

I probably will get shot for writing this, but the following is my opinion only,Barbara Broccoli ("Blond and Pug") grew up in a James Bond atmosphere, her dad has been making the films almost non stop since the 60's,perhaps in her subconscious mind she identified/hero worshipped the character, thus when she took over the reins of Eon she wanted someone "Blond and Pug",why else would she try and cast Sean whatisname ("Blond and Pug") and then cast Daniel ("Blond and Pug").All the Bonds chosen by her dad were tall handsome men with black hair, even the guys who auditioned fit a similar mould (Lewis Collins).

Bonds fitness:

Bond should be functionally fit like a Connery or a Lazenby, not overtly muscular, even if he was muscular initially,he would have lost most of the bulk due to extended operational periods in the field and so on resulting in a trim yest functional physique.

My favorite Bond,Timothy Dalton.

Thats all folks,comments away.....

For the torture bit, I saw it as a way of Bond taunting the enemy in order to have Le Chiffre lose himself and kill Bond in the process as a way of stopping the torture. Bond knows that he's going to die whether he gives the password or not, so he might as well just do what he can to have it end, leaving Le Chiffre with nothing but being searched for and killed by the organization he worked for.

Yeah, the laughing is a stretch. But then again we've so many stretches in the previous films, some even more farfetched than a man laughing at the face of death. I don't think the filmmakers ever really went for something realistic, just grounded. The whole "realistic" remark is thrown around by fans and I think the reason why is because CR is coming right off from the Brosnan films, especially DAD. So comparing those two films, yeah, CR seems like a documentary. I think by the time QOS has past the buzz word "realism" will be less used by the time it sinks in to viewers.

Welcome to the forum pakua4581. I agree. There is a bit of a gulf between Cubby and Barbara's take on what the cinematic Bond should look like.

Welcome to the forum pakua4581, I agree with your anaylsis. Daniel Craig is over muscular makes him look more like a henchman than James Bond.

I've seen people overanalyze the torture scene-I.E. why would he be laughing if he got hit in the b*alls, that sort of thing. It is a bit far fetched, absofreakinglutely, but I'm watching the movie to enjoy it,not think about the realistic aspect of getting hit in the crotch.

He did that to distract from his unBondlike looks, but it made him even more unconvincing as Bond.

Why the new Bond is "Blond and Pug":
Because of Barbara's preferences.

Welcome to the forum.

With regards the torture scene, the producers were never going to go the whole 9 yards and show a fully accurate representation of the gruesome scene from the novel. If they had, CR would have been a cert. 18, maybe even censored.

But I was quite suprised how nasty the scene still is, considering young audiences see Bond films too. Obviously it had been toned down, and the script doctored to add those subtle moments of humour, in an otherwise harrowing scene. I think the compromise worked well.

criticizing Craigs Bond for laughing while being tortured just seemed wide of the mark

There were plenty of things wide of the mark too during the Brosnan era (especially DAD)...

Come on people!

The torture scene in CR was very well done and brought some laughs to the audience.

Of course in reality we all know that if a man was tortured in his privates, then he would pass out at the first contact.

Its a film for christ sake..............give some credance to the producers for
giving us this scene in the first place. :o
