Tis as I feared
Tis as I feared
This news was buried at the bottom of a Rambo 4 story, for some reason, but according to Jesper Christiansen (Mr. White), Bond 22 opens with a 24-style torture-as-entertainment scene. I think of all my complaints about CR, the thing that left the nastiest taste in my mouth was the implication at the end that Bond was entering Jack Bauer territory. I regard 24 as fascist propaganda that has helped turn the USA from a beacon of democracy to a nation that believes that it's OK to torture with its fantasies of confessions under torture being the only thing that can stop a ticking bomb. Because information obtained under torture is famously reliable, right?
My only hope lies in the knowledge that Paul Haggis is a Dennis Kucinich supporter and Daniel Craig reads the Guardian. Hopefully, this means neither man would want Bond turned into a poster boy for the neocons, and that Bond using torture on Mr. White will turn out to have negative consequences for him.
Incidentally, Haggis has already said that Bond 22 begins 2 minutes after the end of CR. Presumably, this means we don't get to see the first 2 minutes of the interrogation.

Hi Kristatos, Do you think we will see the return of the real James Bond?james stock wrote:I meant now, my mistake should check my posts sorry!james stock wrote:I knew it! Movies seem obsessed with torture porn at the moment, james Bond would never torture anyone, he would kill them quick and get out. Sad day when Bond is reduced to a sadist

a) A James Bourne film underperforms at the box office; and/or
b) a traditional Bond-type film scores a sizeable hit (perhaps the forthcoming Spyhunter movie starring The Rock); and/or
c) There is a major critical backlash against the Bournes (Jason and James).
These things would signal to EON that the Bourne bandwagon had run out of steam. I think c) would be the decider, though, since EON seem more interested in courting critical acclaim than putting bums on seats these days. I can't help thinking of the Onion story (which predates The Departed's Oscar triumph) about how Martin Scorcese's next film was to be a documentary with Marty begging for an Oscar for three hours. Three hours of begging for an Oscar sounds like the recipe for a James Bourne film too.

What was so praise worthy about royale? it was terrible, i felt Craig was a very wooden James Bond and it played out as some Steven Seagal movie.
i bet the old shaky cam that directors seem to think add realism will be employed during thye fight scenes.

Compared to a few of Stevan Seagal movies that were actually entertaining, CR did not reach their level. Under Siege for instance. It was designed to be entertaining, and delivered. And I like the guy who played the Admiral -- he was a crusty M-sort.james stock wrote:I think that the entertainment has gone out of the windo now.Kristatos wrote:Only if:james stock wrote:Hi Kristatos, Do you think we will see the return of the real James Bond?

On the new 'torture porn' (a fine phrase) in Bond22 : it will surely not cease to amaze me that actual Bond fans of the books and films will continue to support this very non-Bond like character. Is 'Bond' now going to have a Q-Branch issue torture kit? "Now, pay attention, 007. Here is the latest drill ..."

Personally I'm a huge fan of the show (I guess your not surprised). That said, I agree that Bond should not go down the torture route.
I prefer the confident un-predictability of Bond, like the scene in TMWTGG where Bond points the riffle at the gunsmith and panic's him into giving Bond the information.
“I'd like to thank the Royal Marines for bringing me in like that and scaring the s--- out of me,” Bond Hardman Daniel Craig.

The thing is, you guys make it sound as if Bond is copying the other spy genres.
So if we have a torture scene in Bond 22, Eon must be copying 24.
Or if the production designer on Bond 22 is the same as the Bourne films then it's Eons wish to copy the Bourne series.
Just because they can be compared doesn't mean they are making an exact copy.

Not to mention torture scenes were written way back in the 1950's, by a little-known writer named Ian Fleming.....Captain Nash wrote:The thing is, you guys make it sound as if Bond is copying the other spy genres.

It's all speculation and rumours at the moment. I don't believe anything until I've seen the film for myself. Right now you are all getting worked up over something which may not even be in the film.
You should all chill out and have a beer on me....it's Friday!!
Well, this is one occasion where I'd be happy to be proved wrong. Hopefully, Bond won't turn into Jack Bauer and will be content to stick to his CR detection technique of killing people, nicking their cellphones, hitting redial and going after whoever answers the phone. Though he'll probably stop doing that the first time he finds himself in a pizza delivery place. The Sweeney wrote:It's all speculation and rumours at the moment. They love Craig so much Kris, that even if Bond goes into the torture territory which was very unFlemingesque they'll defend him to their death. They are Fleming fans yet they like Bond being modernized, in style with extremely athletic modern action heroes who wears casual clothes (yet they call DAD uneven). Maybe if Bond was played by a Donald Pleasance look-alike and portrayed Bond as a serious action hero, they'll still love him.The difference being, of course, that when Fleming wrote them, torture was something the villains did.
BOND sells, NOT CRAIG
The reboot is a risky area, did Eon need to do it? NO. Did this confuse alot of people? YES.
The Bond character will always be anchored in the values of the 60s

Violent, gritty, serious I can cope with (and love). Casual clothes I can live with (see LTK). Tough looking guy as Bond rather than smooth/handsome - perfect in my book! Athletic modern action hero I can live with. Torture scenes, even better!Jedi007 wrote:They love Craig so much Kris, that even if Bond goes into the torture territory which was very unFlemingesque they'll defend him to their death. But OTT gadgets, silly, laughable, embarrassing one-liners during a 2-way conversation, totally unrealistic storylines, ridiculous action, invisible cars and bad, bad BAD CGI I cannot live with.
Well, CR had those too. One scene on the Rifftrax commentary had Kevin Murphy doing rimshot sounds after every line during the banter between Bond and Vesper. The Sweeney wrote:silly, laughable, embarrassing one-liners during a 2-way conversation.

Didn't Casino Royale have its share of ridiculous action? I'd hardly call the story realistic or the dialogue great either. I have no armour left...you've stripped it from me. Who talks like that?
