What does James Bond mean to you

I guess we all are avid fans of James Bond, otherwise we wouldn't spend so much time on here, but what does James Bond mean to you and why is he so special?

Iconic figure in the spy genre films, lasting over 4 decades. It is a part of many of our youth, and each decade brings a new generation into the fold. Bond is the "Elvis" of the spy genre. That is why Craig has touched off a nerve. He has tarnished that aura of what James Bond SHOULD be and has been 'morphed' into a similar character of this decade.

I liked Bond because he had his own niche in the action/adventure genre. A lot of heroes are blue-collar everyman oiks. Bond was a charming contrast. I suppose that explains why I can't stand our current plumber 'Bond'. I also love the way each film is more or less the same but dressed up in the latest fashion.

James Bond is supposed to be a counter-point to your Mclanes and Bournes, not one of them. Someone should consider making a spy film with a refined/handsome hero. There is a gap in the market for that currently!

Or, more accurately, they were supposed to be a counterpoint to Bond. As someone pointed out on AFJB, "anti-Bonds" have been around almost as long as Bond. But what he didn't mention was that when Cubby Broccoli and Harry Saltzman wanted a piece of that action, they created a separate film series, the Harry Palmer films. They didn't cast Michael Caine as a bespectacled, down-at-heel character called James Bond.

I got hooked on Bond after watching the excellent Moonraker. It was the first Bond movie I remember watching and I become a fan. Through time I watched all the films on VHS and Sir Roger enhanced his position in my opinion as the best Bond. I pretty much enjoy all the Bond performances apart from Daniel Craig's.

I guess Sir Rog's take on Bond is the closest thing I have come to with regards a role model. He definately left an impression on me and I'm glad it did. His confidence, good looks, refinement and ability with the ladies is a benchmark for most aspiring young males who strive for self improvement.

Bond is the guy you want to be. Tall, Dark, and Handsome, with a cool car, and plenty of female companionship as he travels the world, and kills the villains. at least he was this guy up until a couple of years ago.

What James Bond means to me.
In real life, it's fun to hear the music in your head (or even without the music) and suaving through an exotic city .... especially S. China, since to me that area of the world is the most Bonded place around. So being a Bond fan has brought a lot of adventure to life, since you see things 'bigger than life' .... and when this attitude is dominant, it seems the girls are always prettier, wittier, blahblahblah. And you wake up in a thrilling city next to a beautiful Bond girl and you say, hey, is this a film or what?

Reading the books, watching the films -- it means visiting a different world. Fleming has his own style; you read the first few lines of any of the Bond books and you're hooked. That carried over to the best of the film incarnations. And then much of it was lost in the mishmash of the non-Cubby Eons (not completely, they had plenty of good Bond moments), and then finally lost without a compass in CR.
