What was missing from Casino Royale?
Casino Royale is considered to be a reboot, a retcon, a reimagined Bond, a fresh start, Bond 2.0 and so forth. It was a complete change from the old.
What was missing from Casino Royale and why was it not really a "Bond film?"

Apart from the overly discussed Bond from the naysayers, what really was missing?
We all know you don't think that Craig was suave and charming enough, he's too ugly for some and too short aswell. But none of these things are a problem for me, as I saw no problem with Craig in CR. I know some people also missed the absence of Moneypenny and Q, but to tell the truth, I like the character of Villiers and Q wasn't required. Since Desmond Llewelyn is sadly no longer with us, I can live without Q for a little while. How can you replace Q?
The only complaint I had was the sinking building in the finale. It just wasn't my cup of tea. And yes even the nail in the shoulder being ripped out irked me, but not alot.
Other than that, CR breezes into my top 10 Bond films.

Casino Royale to me would've been much better without the prologue, just a normal Bond film with a new and somewhat different 007.
Some genuine romance would have been very nice in this film, not this flat so-called love story that it had.
I don't like the action sequences on the construction site and the airport, they were not exactly Bondian. A car chase would have been much better, not just the Aston Martin spinning around.
The villian should have been more of the classic type, Goldfinger, Largo, Drax etc.
The drama scenes should have been more gripping, both the casino scenes and the torture scene were surprisingly dull.
I don't mind no Q and Moneypenny, but a new male M would have been interesting.
These are some of the things that would have made the film better I think

What was missing was a convincing character arc for Bond. As Skywalker has pointed out, he starts out in the PCS as something like the Bond we all know and love, spends the rest of the film as Vin Diesel in XXX, then mysteriously turns back into Bond for the final scene. There was the odd scene along the way such as him trying on the tux and giving a "hey, this looks pretty good" expression in the mirror, but no real sense of progress from rookie Bond to "real Bond". I know what the filmmakers were trying to do, but in my opinion, they failed, and saying "ah, but wait and see what happens in Bond 22" is a cop-out.

I'm not simply replying because you gave reference to me, but I couldn't agree more with what you said.Kristatos wrote:What was missing was a convincing character arc for Bond. I have to agree, I mean surely we can all agree on that one.

Does anyone remember the stories that DAD was going to be the first Bond film to feature bare boobs? Rosamund Pike's to be exact. Hey, EON, don't make promises you don't intend to keep

James Bond was missing. With all due respect to Daniel Craig I walk past people in the street everyday who are better looking and taller than him. This is supposed to be James Bond we're talking about.

Another Deja-vu
Another Deja-vu

BOND sells, NOT CRAIG
The reboot is a risky area, did Eon need to do it? NO. Did this confuse alot of people? YES.
The Bond character will always be anchored in the values of the 60s

Yes, because there have only ever been two Bond films, CR and DAD, right?Captain Nash wrote:What was missing, well all the corny one liners "Saved by the bell."
Unbelievable situations, invisible cars, space lasers, surfing an ice wave.
A smug actor playing Bond. That's about it for now.

Dear me, you clearly don't know your Bond Kristatos.Kristatos wrote:Yes, because there have only ever been two Bond films, CR and DAD, right?Captain Nash wrote:What was missing, well all the corny one liners "Saved by the bell."

There are 21 official films in the series. And two un-official films (CR'67 and NSNA)
If it's okay to bag CR, then surely it's fine to have a go at the other films. DAD for me was the low point of the series thus far, which is why I used it in my post. Okay?
