Talk thread for the *NEW* greatest Bond film of all time...
Feel free to discuss the goings on of the tournament in here, but please leave the discussion of it for this thread.
Thanks.
Thanks.
FYEO all the way for me. TMWTGG is forever burned in my memory as "the film that introduced comedy slide whistles to Bond films" (though FYEO had one in the pre-credit sequence too, but I always think of the PCS as being semi-detached from the rest of the film).

Round 5, NSNA vs AVTAK. Tough call. Both films were mediocre and both featured a lead actor who was too old for the role of Bond. However, I am going to pick AVTAK purely on the basis of its fine John Barry score, including Duran Duran's theme tune. Not much of a reason, I know, but when it's that close a contest, anything that causes one contender to nudge ahead is going to decide it for me.

Oh, don't get me wrong, I thought Goldeneye was overrated too. But at least it didn't have any Tarzan yells.Captain Nash wrote:Although I don't give it much hope, against the wildly over rated GoldenEye, I'm gonna go with the highly under rated Octopussy.

Well said Carl. They are both good Bond films IMO. Sir Roger demonstrates a quite serious edge to his Bond when disarming the bomb.carl stromberg wrote:I thought they were both wonderful. Octopussy is regarded - even by those who enjoy a more "serious" Bond - as a wonderful piece of entertainment. Goldeneye relaunched the Bond series: it was great to see: a) another Bond film; b; Brosnan as Bond....!

I love the face off with General Orlov in the train carriage.
Moore is at his best here and to hold your own against an actor like Steven Berkoff is no small feat. But apart from the Tarzan yell, and a few minor quibbles OP is top entertainment.
Glad to see it doing so well this round.
I thought it would be a more one sided GE race.

Round 7 is as tough as Round 5, but for the opposite reason. TND is my favourite of the Brosnan Bonds, for reasons I can't really put my finger on. All the ingredients just seemed to gel for me. However, the contest would still be a no-brainer if not for one thing - Lazenby's wooden performance in OHMSS. Had the film starred Connery, I would have had no hesitation in choosing it, but that one fatal weakness made me wonder whether I should vote for Brosnan's best instead. But I figure a flawed 60's Bond is still better than even the best of the 90's efforts.

Apart from TND not being my favourite Brosnan Bond, that pretty much sums up my feelings too. I will add, that despite George 'The Oak' Lazenby I still rate OHMSS quite highly as a Bond film.Kristatos wrote:Round 7 is as tough as Round 5, but for the opposite reason. What's the basis for matching two Bond films? I can't get it. Dr. No to DAD? OHMSS to TND? Seems like you are really mismatching Brosnan films with the classics...
BOND sells, NOT CRAIG
The reboot is a risky area, did Eon need to do it? NO. Did this confuse alot of people? YES.
The Bond character will always be anchored in the values of the 60s

It's not spite. I think my love of Dalton and LTK is well-known around here. A great example of how to do a grittier, more serious Bond film without jettisoning all the familiar ingredients that Bond audiences have come to expect from the series.Captain Nash wrote:It's sad that you have to say that.Kristatos wrote:Do you really need to ask? But since my vote won't be counted unless I say it, LTK.
Really.
This should be a fair competition, but I'm sure that many here will vote against CR out of spite.
Not that it surprises me.
My vote goes to the film you all love to hate...Casino Royale.

It tells you that I've already stated my views on the respective merits of LTK and CR on numerous occasions, meaning that my answer should be easy to predict.Captain Nash wrote:Kristatos wrote:Do you really need to ask? But since my vote won't be counted unless I say it, LTK.
Well that tells me something.

I think FRWL vs LALD has been probably my hardest choice in the competition so far. The nature of the beast throws up these clash's early on. I think the majority can agree that LALD would have done considerably better if not paired against arguably the greatest Bond film ever in FRWL.
