Bond 23 to Open Two Weeks Earlier in UK & Ireland

Post by Alessandra »

Just released from Variety, so given the source, no way it's inaccurate:
James Bond sets British bow
Pic opens in U.K.-Ireland two weeks before U.S.
By Diana Lodderhose
LONDON -- The 23rd installment of James Bond is set to open in the U.K. and Ireland two weeks before its U.S. release.

The pic will bow Oct. 26, 2012 at the Odeon Leicester Square, London, and then at theaters around the U.K. and Ireland, said MGM and Sony Pictures Ent. Thursday.

It preems in the U.S. on Nov. 9, 2012.

"Bond 23" will see Daniel Craig return to the role as Bond while Brit helmer Sam Mendes will direct the as-yet untitled pic.

Longtime Bond producers Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli from Eon Productions will produce.

In April, Sony Pictures Ent. announced it would distribute pics in the MGM James Bond franchise after weeks of negotiations that included majors such as 20th Century Fox and Warner Bros. in the running.

Sony, which distributed the last two installments of the Bond films, "Casino Royale" and "Quantum of Solace," will co-finance, market and distrib both "Bond 23" and "Bond 24."

MGM still retains rights for "Bond 23" in some overseas territories, but Sony will distribute for the rest of the world.

Excuse me while I laugh out loud. No finished script. Nobody cast. And they want to open in OCTOBER in the UK? This thing is getting weirder by the minute. Them being secretive about the process is one thing and it's always been like that, but ZERO people cast so far and ZERO news of ANY substance on the movie (not to mention the certainty there is NOT a finished script) is just a whole different level. :^o):

I take this one of two ways:

1.)MGM/Sony are supremely confident in team EON. Obviously this is how a lot of places will report this, not without cause since this is how MGM/Sony want to shape the story.

2.)They are trying to break Babs. If the studios foresee production problems they might be trying to add more pressure to break it now rather than later.

[spoil]3.) Bond 23's performance outlook is weak, tough competition in November/December makes a earlier start more desirable. 2012 winter season will be a potentially soft earner with more in common with a summer season than a traditional winter. Frontloaded where the BO take in the first two weeks determine the outcome instead of 4 weeks or more to slowly accumulate a total. -*(Applies to both 1 & 2)[/spoil]

As we have talked about the production on Bond 23 is very sketchy, a tentative November start date, no confirmed co-stars, a script that might be in first draft. Perhaps two sights scouted and a reduced production budget under 150m.

If MGM is concerned about EON finishing Bond 23 on time this might be away to get a fire going under them, alternatively it will to get them (EON) to call it off. Quality should be a bigger concern, unfortunately it is not a big deal for either party involved. EON is comfortable rushing into projects without proper preparation so who knows how they take this, if it upsets them then they can say they have concerns about this new date and gracefully back out of the October/November release. But doing so would also mean Craig would be unavailable, so I don't expect Babs would relent.

Isn't Craig's availability limited now? I remember you talking about that problem a few months ago. Even if they want to squeeze this thing through in time, will Craig have enough availability to do it?

It is small window now where Danny is available, if EON were to delay Bond 23 any longer say 2013 Craig definitely would be unavailable. Basically if they do not begin this November, finishing early 2012 then Craig is not going to be in it. Really they should be filming NOW for a fall 2012 release.

I checked the release schedules on both IMDb and Box Office Mojo. The only film up against it is Tim Burton's Frankenweenie. Not sure how much competition that's going to be, but Burton has his following. His recent movies have all done pretty good box office numbers, despite him being a spent force creatively (IMO).

Yahoo has the headline "Troubled Bond film given release date", next to that hideous picture from QOS of a bloodied Craig in an ugly blue shirt. It's rarely a good sign when a film gets described as "troubled".

Exactly. That is what baffles me. I understand the average moviegoer knows precious nothing about the timelines for movie production so they think they can just throw this out there as if nothing was, but there are many people in the industry AND fans who actually KNOW what happens when you produce a movie that will all be scratching their heads, just like I was, when thinking this over. Seriously? They're so late it's just laughable at this point. Henry Cavill starts filming next month for Superman. And that's going to be released in DECEMBER. They have ALL the main cast, ALL the most important co-stars, they already have everything mapped out, locations and filming dates included. Everything. And of course they've had a finished script for MONTHS now. That's for something that goes December 2012. Eon has NOTHING, no co-stars cast and I mean NONE, not even the main ones, no finished script, MAYBE two locations scouted, and I say maybe because it's far from certain, and NO finished script in sight. Are you kidding me? Which brings me to your other points:
I take this one of two ways:

1.)MGM/Sony are supremely confident in team EON. Obviously this is how a lot of places will report this, not without cause since this is how MGM/Sony want to shape the story.

2.)They are trying to break Babs. If the studios foresee production problems they might be trying to add more pressure to break it now rather than later.
I was waiting for your take on this as the only thing I could think of was case 2). Rushing things trying to screw her over once and for all. And since MGM can afford ZERO delays and ZERO extra expenses, well this pretty much clinches it. No escape, you gotta do it earlier because we've got no money to advertise AND we can't compete with the big names (plus what you said in the spoiler part). So you must rush, and you can't afford to sink, like AT ALL. Which is basically an impossible situation. Completely agree with 1), too. Obviously the story (if there's one LOL) will be sold that way. "Oh they're so good getting into things with zero prep and zero time and then produce amazing stuff, look at QoS!" To which I'd say "yeah. EXACTLY my point."
Yahoo has the headline "Troubled Bond film given release date", next to that hideous picture from QOS of a bloodied Craig in an ugly blue shirt. It's rarely a good sign when a film gets described as "troubled".
It's rarely a good sign when even freaking yahoo uses that adjective  UGH that QoS bloodied Craig photo, I cannot stand it. Opposite of what James Bond is. If I want to see Jason Bourne, I go see Bourne, and Matt Damon is way better looking and a much better actor than Craig. So spare me, thanks.

I frankly don't know what they're thinking at this point. Not that EON's minds make any sense whatsoever or ever have  But... the whole process up to now for this movie has been beyond bizarre. And given what we know, I just... smell a rat. I can't know for sure what's boiling, but some elements just don't add up.

I'm amazed an official release date has been announced, when no one has even been cast yet. Has the script even been finished...???

I don't think they have a script. I know you like Craig, but his movie isn't going to happen too soon if he has no lines to recite!

That's basically what I was saying, too, that it's just totally bizarre how this is happening. They announce release dates and not a soul has been cast yet. And as far as I know there's no finished script yet either. (that's what I've been told from those in the know). I'm just really not getting what the hell is going on here. It's certain that the process isn't normal, and it's equally certain they're incredibly late doing things. Yet they announce release dates for OCTOBER (so earlier) in the Uk. Though I have to say October is a dead month here in Europe for movies (stuff that matters is released either in September when people are all back to work from holidays or in December for the holidays). So I think that means they are far from confident in the performance of the movie. Still, regardless of this, I just find the whole thing bizarre. It's one thing not to have anything about the script (no way nothing would have leaked from that either, but let's pretend that can be the case), but it is dead certain they cast nobody as that would for sure be news and there would be no way to keep it SO secret. It's certain not a soul has been cast, and I know through the grapevine the script isn't finished. So I'm just really perplexed.

This is one of the strangest builds up to a Bond moves I can remember. We know the script work was only starting the end of March, we know a couple of actors were approached however it looks like some could have picked up conflicting projects in the meantime. They may have scouted locations in India and South Africa.
(Sweeney when is the Monsoon season in India?)

I do think they have an idea of what they want to do Sam Mendes has certainly given us this impression, nobody here expects MGM to give them a hard time doing whatever they want.

What makes this hard for me to believe is I have to accept Eon was diligent in their duties for a change, actively preparing for Bond 23 since 2010.

At this point I fully expect them to have movie out October after next, I just don't expect it to be any better than the last offering. It is going to be a rush job of the worst sort. I sincerely hope it does not put a hurting on the future of 007.

"Troubled" is the only way to describe Bond 23. It's been nothing but a cluster f (excuse my use of the vernacular)from the start.

What's worse is everyone that's been rumoured to be in this film have come out with remarks like they're surprised or what, huh I'm in this film?, first I heard of it etc, how's eyaawwn gonna get this film together if the script isn't even done, men in black 3 already has that problem but atleast it's started shooting with a full cast I presume, eon can't just do a film with craig and dench..are eon really that strapped of cash that they can't find anyone willing to be in this film?....has it got that bad?, if this is the case stuff the well knowns and go for no names otherwise this will be a quantum of solace.

Even so, as far as I know, only 5 people are definitely signed up: Craig, Dench, Mendes, Arnold and Logan. They'd still need to go through the rest of the casting process, hire a crew and so on. Hiring unknowns might be a little quicker due to fewer committments, but I still don't see how they can avoid it being another QOS.

Let me apply my "Dream Team: Starting Five" basketball concept to this discussion. Would you feel comfortable having those people mentioned above as your "starting five", with Barbara Broccoli as the "coach"?

I am probably the most comfortable with Arnold and Logan, but that still leaves us with two questionable players, and Daniel Craig (who shouldn't even be allowed on the "court"). Then we are left to count on "Coach Babs" to draw up a successful game plan.

This does have the makings of "another QOS". I think this might have the makings of being worse than QOS!

Well, now that John Barry is conducting the heavenly choir, Arnold is the best we're likely to get, composer-wise. Not happy about Logan, though I believe Purvis and Wade are still on script doctoring duties - I know they get a lot of hate from the fans, but not from me, and at least their presence means we get someone with Bond experience in a key position. My position on Dench is the same as it's always been: the role of M should have been recast in CR, but it's too late to fix that now, so I'm fine with her being in the film. Mendes could surprise us, but I fear another Marc Forster, a director of character-based dramas with no action experience. I think a lot depends on who they hire as 2nd unit director - if it's Dan Bradley again, we're screwn. If the rumours I've heard about the opening scenes of QOS being shown in film schools as an example of how not to edit an action sequence are true (and I see no reason to disbelieve them, though I haven't heard it from an unimpeachable source, just Internet chatter), then hopefully even EON will get the message. If they bring Vic Armstrong back, he might be able to save the film, but he has a nasty habit of making Bond films that actually feel like Bond films, so I doubt EON will want anything to do with him.

That just leaves Craig, and you already know what I think of him.

I agree with a lot of what you say here. I am with you on your doubts concerning Logan. I state I am "comfortable" with him, but I recognize that he can be inconsistent. Are we going to get the Logan who wrote Gladiator and The Aviator, or the Logan who wrote Any Given Sunday and Star Trek: Nemesis ? Plus, he will be "playing" for "Coach Babs".

Huh, now I'm starting to get uncomfortable about being comfortable about Logan! :?
