Cooper is a little ferrety for my tastes. There are worse choices for Bond, but he's nowhere near the top of my list.

The day AFTER The Man From U.N.C.L.E. releases a trailer that clearly pleases a hell of a lot of people? EON and SONY release "a glimpse into the new 007 film, Spectre".

They saw how well received the trailer with Cavill and Hammer was and they RUSHED to release one the day after. If anyone thinks this is a coincidence, I will just laugh at them.

Here it goes
http://www.esquire.com/entertainment/mo ... _143628377
For me, what Eon did is laughable, laughable in a pitiful way. It's that "me-too" mentality. It really emphasizes what they've struggled to do all along since Craig was cast--struggle to show they have the "true" Bond in Craig and struggle to show they've got a "true" Bond film when in fact they have none of that; and, I think, secretly they know it but can't come to terms with it, or they understand they've lost it, lost the creativity to make a Bond film, or all of these things combined. Hence, their struggle to exist. So pumping massive millions into marketing campaigns, for each new Craig Bond film, for their snow job on the masses that he's Bond is the norm for Eon. Then there are those occasional puff pieces in magazines or the web to remind the masses that Craig is the best Bond ever. Yet they never had to do such a massive PR stunt for the previous actors. Just putting those actors in tuxedos was enough to basically tell audiences that "here's Bond." With this UNCLE trailer, Eon is scrambling. Cavill isn't even playing Bond and the impression world-wide audiences are getting is that he's Bond, or he would make a good Bond, or they're asking "why isn't he Bond?"

The more I think about it, the 300-million plus production cost of Spectre was inevitable. Eon and Sony has to devote $250 million for marketing. Hey, that's what it takes to prove that their man Craig is Bond. Now here we are with this little behind-the-scenes footage, shown to the world a day after the UNCLE trailer, and it just screams desperation.

When those Sony email leaks were revealed, and we saw the back-and-forth exchange from those executives providing feedback on the script, you could already see the idiocy. These morons who know nothing about Bond or Fleming were actually shaping the story, and their taste is so bad. And the fragments of the exposed script were riddled with spelling errors. Then again, Eon brought back Purvis and Wade to reinforce John Logan's idiocy, so we're in for a real crapfest.

I agree BJ (Shock, horror!) That image of Cavill is perfect for Bond, including a longer version of the 60's Lazenby/Connery type hairstyle (far better than Craig's, IMO).

I'd be pleased if he was the next Bond. But I can't see it happening. Babs and co. don't seem to want to go down the route which would be most popular....
    I am rolling over your "shock, horror!" comment. You know things are self-evident when Sweeney and BJ agree.

I of course am in complete agreement over this being pure Bond perfection, and yes, I absolutely agree on the hairstyle, too, it's perfect!
As far as Babs, I am sure she will resist it, but in reality now that Pascal is gone, she doesn't have anyone supporting her anymore, so I think that if Sony AND MGM know what's best for Bond (and MGM sure does, they just weren't listened to, and the leaked emails are proof of it), there is a serious chance he IS in fact hired.

I'm glad EW used that as the image for their story because I saw it in the trailer and thought "James Bond poster", but because I haven't had time to take appropriate stills yet, I couldn't do it. And this is HD, so all the better. There is another image in the trailer that is straight James Bond in my opinion, this one:

Image

That would be a fantastic Bond poster. And he has that exact expression Fleming describes in "Casino Royale".

Unfortunately, you are correct on all counts. I think that after the leaked emails, no one with a smidgeon of critical thinking can EVER AGAIN defend Sony or Eon. And don't even try with "they changed the script" because some of those emails were as late as NOVEMBER, when they had already started filming. The public backlash was enormous so now they're "re-shaping as they go". Which is OUTRAGEOUS for a production of that level with that RIDICULOUS amount of money poured in. Amount of money that MGM RIGHTLY wanted to cut, suggesting sensible changes, and Babs and Pascal refused. Thankfully, this is gonna be the last production that involves the nefarious duo. I really do think that with Pascal gone, Barbara Broccoli is toast. No one sane (And it doesn't take much to be better than Pascal) will ever approve of her craziness when it comes to both unnecessary spending for scenes, and ridiculous Bond ideas that have nothing to do with the cinematic OR literary James Bond.

Now here we are with this little behind-the-scenes footage, shown to the world a day after the UNCLE trailer, and it just screams desperation.
You make an interesting point about the inevitable costs and about the fact the massive marketing campaign wasn't necessary to this extent with previous Bonds. It's true and it can be measured with the figures we have for Brosnan movies, for example, that they didn't spend nearly as much on a movie before or on advertising.
Thing is, marketing and advertising are not included in "film budget", not usually anyway. That's an extra and separate voice. What I mean is that those 300 mln were about mere production, which is why the MGM dude suggested to cut down the costs with sensible measures like using two train wagons instead of three and shooting a sequence in studio instead of wasting two nights around Rome since it's at night and at a villa, so the environment can be re-created. The money for advertising is ON TOP of the production costs... and your point remains absolutely valid about the unnecessary spending on it, as in it being over the top.

I agree the Bond trailer all of a sudden and exactly the day after Man from U.N.C.L.E. was hilariously transparent "Me too" attitude. In the end, they know exactly how much money (or actually how little it is) they make with Bond, and that's not enough to make good profits. They know they desperately need to keep selling the "Oh don't forget this is Bond" thing because no one random who looks at Craig sees Bond unless they're told he is. My father and mother, who introduced me to Bond when I was two, and I'm not joking, could NOT believe the dude was Bond when they first saw him. Let's leave aside my mother, who of course is the reason I have taste, who immediately said "he looks like Vladimir Putin. And what's with that (Italian expression) chicken butt mouth?". But my father, who is a man who only cares about seeing a good Bond movie, was outraged. I laughed because I've never seen him react that way to a movie. HE fell asleep during Casino Royale LOL. I kid you not. And he cannot stand the sight of Craig. He was CONVINCED he was the villain in the movie. So that tells you everything. These are people who know Bond and are convinced that's the villain... imagine someone who doesn't follow much, but only checks when a new Bond is out. They'd never identify someone looking like Craig with James Bond... hence why, like you said, there's the constant need to reiterate "oh this is James Bond!".

Cooper would have a hard time making people believe he could defeat Q in a fight, let alone Mr. Hinx in SPECTRE. Cavill looks like he could squash Cooper with one hand. I do NOT see Cooper even in the running for consideration of the Bond role.

I'm agreeing with you twice in one day BJ....
I too don't think Cooper would be a good choice for Bond. His face is too small and feminine, and as Kris correctly observed `ferrety'.....

He was gravely miscast as Fleming, and would be gravely miscast as Bond.

Twice in a day?! LOL Something is going on.

The bold expresses my thoughts on Cooper's face perfectly. I do agree he would be gravely miscast as Bond. He has none of the characteristics Bond has. Tall, dark, handsome, blue eyes, masculine jaw, and that "I could kill you now" look. None are there. I saw the Fleming miniseries, as they broadcast it here on satellite, and I was wondering "did they do it on purpose to make Fleming unattractive? To show how Bond was the opposite of him?". I never had a chance to discuss with you guys, but I'm glad you, Sweeney, feel he was very miscast for that part. I didn't even give it much thought, I thought that for whatever reason the producers of the series didn't want the man to be attractive in order to show a "contrast" with Bond. I didn't like the choice but because I hadn't read much around about it, I didn't know others felt the same way. So I'm glad it wasn't just me.
