The replica was virtually an exact duplicate of the real thing, btw. This was only a couple of years ago, so you'd think security would have been beefed up.*** Also, when in Hong Kong, a fellow who was a detective there took a look and it, and at first glance he thought it was real.
Supposedly, guns are illegal there. But I was rummaging thru a hole in the wall shop of replica guns and there in the case was a battered PPK -- it was the real thing, magazine, etc. without bullets of course. I reminded me of TMWTGG where Bond visits Macao and the gunsmith. I asked the owner if it was for sale. Nope.
*** -- but airports of course still hire only rent-a-copsfor the x-ray machines, so they don't have that much incentive. That said, the cop who pulled me over was a big city cop; Since the PPK didn't show up on the scanners, it's doubtful that anyone could have found it, unless of course they had looked in every corner of luggage. Anyway, that tells you how easy it is to bring strange things in. I could have brought in illicit DIAMONDS ('exquisite'), etc.
On another tangent story, a funny friend of my dad overseas (I was visiting there) half-jokingly said he could rig my shoes to carry diamonds. Shades of Q. He has a full workshop, so he really could.
Yesh, Cmdr 0077 knows a lot of shady characters. Did I tell you the one about the fellow at the embassy in Tokyo ..... Was his friend named Dikko? hm....
