Sir rogers previous offers to play bond
Now I know that roger Moore had been offered to play bond before lazenby in an adventure set in Cambodia but it didn't happen. Then he was offered ohmss - roger had stated he read the script and loved it - but he was doing the saint. Now I also heard he was offered you only live twice but I also read that he was offered thunder ball or atleast was there for standby. Is the thunder ball bit true?
Re: Sir rogers previous offers to play bond
I had heard that he was on the original shortlist for Dr No, along with Connery and Patrick McGoohan. I started a "what if?" thread on it, imagining that Moore had played Bond from 1962 to 1985.

I've personally only heard about the Dr. No offer. Moore has said that Diamonds Are Forever was a Bond film he would have really wanted to be in, but once again, his TV career got in the way with The Persuaders series.

Re: Sir rogers previous offers to play bond
Well roger Moore was free in the middle of 1965 as his contract with The saint was up and he wanted to return to feature films but mr grade offered him more money for the next season of the saint coloured episodes so he was lured back into plAying mr Templar once more - it was between this time that cubby - the father of the splendidly intelligent woman with glowing foresight who picked the most handsome bond Daniel Craig who has ears like spuds and is charming as a cement mixer - approached him ready to hand him you only live twice in case Sean Connery - who was getting cold feet ( possibly his bodily parts were Getting cold as well) to 007 - turned down the offer. Of course, it never happened - mr Moore returned to playing templer in the middle of '66. So he was free for a six eight months or had he been offered thunder ball too. Perhaps Connery was showing cold feet. Also as mentioned Moore was offered -OHMSS which he would be superb in - but the saint came in the way.
Thanks for the link.

Segment interview with sir roger
Where were you first approached about playing James Bond?
Formally, in 1973 for Live And Let Die, though there was talk of doing a film in Cambodia a few years earlier... It all fell through because of the troubles there, and then Sean came back for Diamonds Are Forever.
Is it true you were originally in the frame to play Bond in On Her Majesty's Secret Service?
Possibly, I don't know. There were many people mentioned, as there were for Dr. No.

Now The Cambodia bond film offer must've happened just when the saint came off the air in '69 and he was free for a while and the Cambodia idea - there was trouble and strife in that country so they couldn't film there - he got the Persuaders gig and Connery came in for diamonds are forever.

What I remember is Cubby talking the studio in to Roger in the late 60s early 70s before Roger was officially cast. Ian did like him back when Dr No was cast.
There is a story about Sean Connery getting a copy of every script from the time he left up til the day he made a "scab"/"Non official" Bond movie. I'm not so sure about Roger Moore and the YOLT and TB, maybe he was on stand by, as I'm sure there is an actor on standby right now.

Re: Sir rogers previous offers to play bond
Was this Cambodia film an original story or was it based, however loosely, on a Fleming work?

That I'm not too sure - perhaps not from a Fleming book
