Here:
The Sweeney wrote:But it also shows encouranging signs that audiences now prefer this kind of action hero, rather than the stiff upper-lip, suited-and-booted, tongue-in-cheek comedy, eyebrow-raising, gag-a-minute, sleaze bag driving around in invisible cars, gondolas, while surfing on CGI waves, being watched by double-taking pigeons.

Bourne is the way forward now

The Sweeney's familiar rant (aimed at Moore and Brosnan) writes off 50% of the original series. I recall The Sweeney saying You Only Live Twice was s**t the other week too. I may have missed a few other disses. I like all of the original Bond films for a bit of fun and can watch any of them on television. The 'most of the Bond films were shite but Casino Royale was so brilliant I nearly exploded position' really does annoy the crap out of me.
Yup! YOLT is pretty bad, along with AVTAK, OP, and all the Brozza flicks.

My favourite flicks are OHMSS, FRWL, Dr. No, GF, LTK, TLD, FYEO, LALD, and of course CR. I even have guilty pleasures such as TMWTGG, parts of MR (without the gondola and double-taking pigeon) and DAF. And I love all of the novels.

So as a Bond fan, am I not allowed to dislike some of the films then? Very intelligent.

As Bond fans, are we also allowed to like all of the films EXCEPT Casino Royale with Craig, and still be considered loyal Bond fans,Sweeney? People at MI6 cannot understand this concept, people here do, and you are a reasonable person.

Well, the references to "booted and suited" and "stiff upper lip" could apply to any movie Bond before Craig, and to the literary Bond for that matter. It was a part of the essence of Bond that the makers of CR chose to ignore, in order to make him more like Bourne.

After the huge USA opening success of TBU, watch for Eon to intensify their attempt to make Craig's Bond even more "Bourne"-like, which will please our friend The Sweeney, immensely. The question is,HOW FAR will Eon go to top TBU?

I'm actually with you part of the way, but YOLT is a guilty pleasure for me (perhaps because it was the first Bond film I saw) and my judgement of the Brosnan era is less harsh than yours. It seems your bugbears are inappropriate comedy and the sci-fi elements that crop up in some of the films. I too dislike slapstick (the Bond films have always had humour, but there's a world of difference between Connery's dry one-liners and that infamous, almost symbolic double-taking pigeon). But I'm a sci-fi and fantasy fan, so I'm probably a lot more tolerant of those elements than you are.

You summed up my tastes fairly accurately there, Kris.

Of course. If someone does not like CR but likes all the previous Bond films, I immediately don't think they are not a Bond fan anymore.

That is not the view on your 'other' site Sweeney. The Jetsetter's home cannot accept nor comprehend your logic. You should try to appease their combative rhetoric and welcome ALL Bond fans to their fold. By the way, did you take your wife to see TBU once, twice,or three times?

You really do enjoy Bourne as much as Bond. You obviously prefer gritty spy films, PERIOD, whoever the character is. Problem for you might be IF Eon ever retreats to the prior formula they might lose you to a protest, correct?

Absolutely! Back in 89, LTK was a dream come true for me. The Brosnan era was a nightmare I have only just woken up from, and CR has brought my dreams alive again.

If EON dare shatter my dreams now.....

Rest assured they won't for Bond 22. As long as Bourne thrives, they will continue to mimic it. I only hope Craig gets replaced soon. I do not mind 'gritty', but not with Craig, as you well know. I am now in your Brosnan zone with Craig.

Care to back it up? Clearly, you aren't above all people to say such a thing unless it is of course your opinion.
That's exactly what I was thinking.

A ridiculous, ignorant and quite frankly, stupid comment there, Jedi.
Back then, people with class means you belong to high society. A high society was composed with people who have gone to proper schools, they have proper conducts, they know how to dress well, they know how to talk properly even when they are mad. Now high society means you're either a horny hotel heiress who acts as a stripper or an unknown actor suddenly becoming famous who curse and swears even he's in a public place.
BOND sells, NOT CRAIG
The reboot is a risky area, did Eon need to do it? NO. Did this confuse alot of people? YES.
The Bond character will always be anchored in the values of the 60s

I actually agree with you there, Jedi. Famous/high society now means you've been on some reality TV freak show, or know how to kick a football and get paid lots of money!!

You are not really a fan of Cubby's movie series. Merely a self-appointed Fleming expert.

And who ever said people like Paris Hilton had class? :?

Quiz of the day: Which is more class?

a) Cursing at someone who invaded your privacy.
b) Talking about beating your wife on public TV.
c) Making a hissyfit at your producer before your film ever got processed.
d) Making a hissyfit because your contract ran out.

Winner receives a free copy of CR.
