It gets better as all the time in the world passes..... Chessy, but great cheese. A real popcorn movie, the Japan of dreams and violence (very Flemingnisque topics) with Connery (and everything and everyone else) photographed brilliantly. And Barry, John Barry .... who knew that music would become legendary? This score should've won the Oscar.
You would imagine someone at Eon would've lobbied, Hey, listen to this brilliant score! I believe Barry received Oscar for Dances With Wolves, but that wasn't as wonderful as YOLT.
YOLT has a 'serious side' .... there was a review on what all the cameras mean, a prophecy on the Big Brother world we now live in .... maybe even a nod to the fact that London has more surveillance cameras than just about anywhere. But I love the daft side more: Bond's body being pitched into Hong Kong harbour, into perfect crystal waters (you would have to be very careful diving in the real harbour!). We accept it because there's the suave Barry music as we glance at "British Naval Commander ...." (and where can one buy a copy of that front page?). Bond then meets Moneypenny in her cute dress whites, and finally see Admiral Messervy in his own submarine cabin. Bond looks suave in his uniform; pity Connery wasn't in his Thunderball slimness; physically, Connery was at his best in that film. It would've been fun to see Bond lurking around Tokyo in his uniform. The silliness goes on and on of course. Tiger is excellent, with sense of humor and over-the-top dubbing. I know some have said the part should've been played by an older actor, such as Toshiro Mifune, but some of the wryness would be missing. Dikko Henderson was a poor choice, not anything like the novel's character, who would've challenged Bond to a drinking and/or arm wrestling contest.
Favorite Bond Movie: Dr. No, From Russia With Love, Goldfinger, Thunderball, The Spy Who Loved Me, Moonraker, For Your Eyes Only, The Living Daylights, GoldenEye, Tomorrow Never Dies.
