Cheesy stuff in OHMSS

Post by Count_Lippe »

Here are some of the stuff I find very cheesy in OHMSS.

Sorry if I'll offend anyone. :P

The fight on the beach looks like something from a comic book with guys flying all over the place, it's also rather stupid why Draco's men appear all of a sudden and want to kill Bond, since he was the one rescuing Tracy from the ocean, didn't they see any of this?

Why do we get screeching tyres in the sand?

"Fortunately we chave chad a cancellation". The snobbery and poshness in this film is just vulgar really, not elegant and tasteful.

What's the point of a second fight scene in the hotel room?

Silly outfit for 007.
Image

Silly Tracy outfit.
Image

The idea that M collects butterflies is just stupid.

Here is where the cheesy dubbing starts.

Isn't some of the fight scene silliness down to slow cranking or whatever it was called, where it looks ridiculously fast?

Lazenby's uppercuts were a bit exaggerated, and always reminded me of those old fighting games.

But overall, I still thought the fighting scene on the beach wasn't too bad.

Personally, I think this obsessive fear of "cheesiness" is precisely what led to the pretentiousness of the current wave of Bond films. Embrace the cheese!

No you got it all wrong Kristatos, this was decades before Craig.

The thing is Peter Hunt wanted to make the ultimate Bond film, but he exaggerated many of the Bond ingredients to the point it became cheesy, like the over-emphasis on luxury.

Other things was due to sloppy film-making, like the doll falling down the mountain, the skis weighed more than the doll apparently and the doll fell standing up.

The previous Bonds didn't have this much cheesiness, although there were the soldiers falling over in GF for example, the sci-fi stuff in YOLT, and a few scenes that were sped up, and so on.

OHMSS was supposed to be a very serious Bond, but Terence young managed to make serious Bond atmosphere much better than Peter Hunt, who was primarily an editor.

Most of the action scenes in OHMSS were directed by John Glen also.

Well I just think this film is a bit over-rated and hyped.

It wasn't an immediate hit in 1969/1970 as you know, but a decade later or so it started to be held in high regard, and was seen as something of a cult classic within the Bond series.

Suddenly many fans said this is the best film of the entire series and Lazenby wasn't so bad after all.

It became a hype when the film is in fact far from perfect.

No film is perfect, but I think its main problem is Lazenby's performance, not the occasional botched VFX shot, which can be found in most of the Bond films before Goldeneye, when the filmmaking started to become slicker.

Looking at it objectively, I think Lazenby's performance wasn't so bad. On Her Majesty's Secret Service was a more serious/emotional Bond film than the previous ones, which I suppose was sort of a risk at that time. Plus, having to fill the shoes of the very popular Sean Connery is no easy task. So considering his lack of acting experience, Lazenby still did a pretty good job, in my opinion.

TSWLM is on cable tv tonight in their 21 days of Bond nightly marathon. Jaws was as cheesy as it comes as a villain, especially in MR where the sky diving stunt man looks so different than Kiel. Broccoli never cared about the things we dissect but he should have. Lazenby actually looks quite similar to Connery as Bond, not like the putrid lemon drop that currently is in the role.

You don't get it bjmdds, Jaws was supposed to be over the top or cheesy.

The free fall sequence in MR was perhaps a bit flawed though.

But anyway OHMSS was supposed to be the most epic, romantic and Bondian 007 movie of them all.

Unfortunately it has a lot of unintentional cheesiness.

George Lazenby was ok though and did his best I guess, it's not his fault some things in the film didn't work.

That's a helluva ambitious project to take on. Taking down the most universally gushed over Bond film of all time.

I happen to agree it is not up to the hype (until recently one of the most over hyped films of fandom), P.S. George Lazenby is not a fan of OHMSS either.

It's one of the exceptions to the rules of Bond films that some purest love to say is the high water mark of the series, according to some elitist out of twenty-three movies only four are supposed to be any good.

All of that aside I don't have a problem with some of the issues raised, a considerable part of it comes down to it is how movies were made in this era.
[sub](Indian Jones and last Crusade some twenty years later had similar problems dropping dummies from a cliff)[/sub]
There are some things I do like for instance the opening credits are some of the best in the series, featured some great music as well, however I noticed the Bond theme would start up for Tracy not much a complaint but it bugged me.

Pre-all weather radial, obviously a bad set of retreads. Not really, sloppy film making.
Silly outfit for 007.

About right for the place and time.
Silly Tracy outfit.
Image
Answer same as above, for reference see the 1960s, the choices made could have been a lot worse.
The idea that M collects butterflies is just stupid.

I might agree except he did (a perfectly respectable hobbie), and Bond knew more about than M which irked M, Bond could demonstrate his knowledge because he had a well rounded education and interests out side killing he read up on, unlike the GED Bond of the current era.
Dame Dench hunched over a specimen would be out of place and extremely difficult to take anything she said next seriously but for the Admiral it adds to his character

I can just imagine the Bond of the books feeling utterly ridiculous if he had to wear those riding clothes.

And they should have gone for a somewhat more timeless fashion instead of letting both Bond and Tracy wear those late 60s clothes, ruffled shirts, etc.

It's ridiculous really that Bond's expertise includes lepidoptery.

All of this stuff makes me cringe.

I'll agree with the Count OHMSS is very much overrated. OHMSS doesn't even make my top 15 Bond movies. The costumes are horrible, the story is slow, & Lazenby was mmmeh...
That said I liked Rigg. She is one of my personal favorite :007: girls.
The book was far from my favorite book as well, but my taste for flemings novels is not that of the majority.

I wonder if the high praise for OHMSS isn't born out of a feeling that it was unfairly slated on its initial release. Certainly Lazenby got a lot of hate simply for not being Sean Connery. But I do think he was the weakest link in the film.

I could see that. OHMSS, while not close to being my favorite Bond movie, is still a Bond movie, I love all the classic Bonds and it does get repeat viewings from me. It's just not my favorite.
