Will CR eventually turn out to be another DAD?

CR has had a great time with the reviewers and the majority of Bond fans. It is the highest grossing Bond film of all time and DC fan's have been gloating in it's success.

However, will CR ultimately turn out to be another DAD, well recieved initially but when the dust settles and the DVD has been watched several times will the tide turn and will opinion change?

I personally feel it will go down as DC's worst Bond film.

But DAD didn't get all that great reviews, that's the difference. I don' t think it was that bad a film, it has several bad points, but also points that made up for them, but critically it was badly received.

Will it be seen as Craig's worst film? Depends how good Craig's follow up films are. I'd like it to be his worse, because that would mean Craig's Bond sequels were great.

GoldenEye got great reviews in 1995 but is often cited as an overrated entry by fans now. Casino Royale will be the same IMO.

DAD still got decent reviews. It was only when the DVD came out that the level of criticism intensified.

Will Pro-DC fan's or alternatively CR lovers be honest with there appraisal of the film after several viewings. It may well be the case that it still rates as high, but maybe, just maybe the film and DC's performance as Bond may slip off the lofty perch and settle into Bond mediocrity.

Worse still I may love the film and DC's performance and watching it more times. I can always live in hope

Die Another Day was well recieved. I'm not sure why there is all this revisionism going on. The Bond friendly UK critics who loved Craig also gave Die Another Day glowing reviews. They are always supportive of a Bond film (admittedly, most of the more "intellectual" critics who normally dismiss Bond gave Casino Royale glowing reviews.) It's difficult to find the reviews of Die Another Day as they are not on the internet now, but the response at the time was mostly positve.

Of course, I'm not suggesting it's in the top 5 Bond films....

It was a surprise hit at the time. Of course, people can have different opinions now after seeing it lots of times, as Skywalker was saying.

I think when people see CR on DVD/TV a few times many may say "actually this is bland, overlong and overrated".

Not by me. I think The World Is Not Enough was the best of the Brosnan era. Martin Campbell IMHO is responsible for the two most overrated James Bond films ever made.

Not by me. I think The World Is Not Enough was the best of the Brosnan era. Martin Campbell IMHO is responsible for the two most overrated James Bond films ever made.

Goldeneye IMO was a good Bond film with probably PB's best performance and a great supporting cast.

It's a shame Martin Campbell did not follow that formula with CR.

I don’t think CR will age near as well as DAD. DAD is still a classic Bond adventure with all of the classic characters, Q (R?), Moneypenny, M, and the MI6 gang we know since GE.

The comments on the DAD DVD case are “One of the best Bond films ever!”
“The Savviest and most exciting Bond adventure in years!”
I remember seeing “the best Bond since Connery” said about Brosnan

DAD left us hungry for more. Could not want to wait for the next one. We left CR feeling let down.

CR is over rated. Just is. No film can live up to these expectations for long. It will settle down. Where? who knows, some love the TD -GL movies and hate the rest. That probably where DC’s movies will end up, loved by some and written off as franchise one offs by the rest. Not that they all will be bad movies mind you. juts different from the rest of the franchise and what people know Bond as since the 1950’s.

The media cards played well for Cirag last November, I don’t think Craig will get as good a chance the second movie. If anything he will be old news and common opinion might want a return to the classic Bond already tired of the thug-ish newbie.
Partly why I hope he becomes Bond quickly in Bond 22.

I simply think it's too early to say at this stage. I think it will be a long remembered Bond film, much like OnHerMajestsSecretService, TheLivingDaylights and GoldenEye.

When I came out of DAD, all I wanted to do was go home and cry in despair at what they had done to Bond.

You make it sound like your talking for everyone. Many fans left CR feeling like they'd just watched a great Bond film, it's true that some fans didn't like it, as evident by members on this site, but Casino Royale is popular critically and on the fan sites.

Casino Royale seemed to appeal to those people who don't like Bond films. They enjoyed it as a Bourne/Bauer like action film and liked Daniel Craig the musclebound action star (which I never thought woould happen).

If you read the reviews and listen to peoples comments, many people - from Paul Morley to AICN - say that CR is an intriguing and entertaining film, but not James Bond and the Daniel Craig character cannot really be called James Bond. I agree.

I disagree. Also, it's already lived up to it's expectations, it's not like it hasn't reached the cinema yet, and in my opinion, it passed my expectations and was a great Bond film, were you thinking of a different word?

It appealed to me, a fan of the Bond films for over twenty years

Craig is fit and in great shape, but not overly musclebound. As for the Bourne / Bauer comment I'm a little confused???

Most of the reviews I read were nothing but positive for Craig the film and the franchise in general. As for Daniel Craig not being able to be called James Bond, I suggest you go see the film again. His name is in the end titles...
