Ultimately, both Broccoli and Sony agreed that their Bond should be reborn in the same dark vein as Jason Bourne, the part Matt Damon had successfully commandeered in "The Bourne Identity" (2002) and "The Bourne Supremacy" (2004). After nearly 200 candidates and five screen tests, the two sides finally came together and agreed on Craig, the thoroughbred Broccoli had been backing since before Sony came on board. Considering how savvy Barbara Broccoli is, in her mind, it was probably never really a competition at all.
It's also interesting to note that while Daniel Craig was in contract talks to renew as his royal Bondness, London native Idris Alba ("Thor," "Prometheus") had spoken to Broccoli about becoming the first black Bond. Of course that discussion was made moot when Craig signed on for three more Bond flicks, starting with "Skyfall," which opens this Friday, November 9th.

I can just about live with a blonde haired Bond, a black Felix Leiter and a black Moneypenny, but if they make Bond himself black then I will be washing my hands of the franchise. I would start up my own war campaign on EON, far worse than this forum.

Bond is described as a white English male, and that's how it should stay. This is not a racist issue here. If a new Shaft movie is released with a white guy playing the main part, I would have equal problems with it.

If Babs dare to cast a black man playing Bond, she may as well say goodbye to the franchise, as it would be committing commercial suicide.

There's always people taking about the possibility of a black actor playing James Bond, which I personally think is just going way too far. It's not that I'm racist or anything, but there does have to be a certain guideline for the casting of specific characters in a film. I didn't care for the casting of Craig as Bond, and I certainly don't like the casting choices for Q and Moneypenny. The characters don't resemble the ones from the older films, and it completely ruins the continuity/feel of the series. It just sends out the impression that the producers are going wild and doing whatever they feel like. Next they'll probably start getting random guys off the street to play Bond.

Q is a gadget guru, not a computer geek, and not a child. Political inclusion is deemed necessary by Eon. By doing this, you politically alter the very fabric of the franchise. I am against any redefining of the races in Bond. Put all the NEWLY created characters as they wish. That's fine. BUT, MP and Leiter are now miscast due to politics. As Sweeney has so eloquently stated, a black Bond ENDS it permanently. It's on life support now, in terms of a Bond film quality. Sweeney, I salute your passion as we here all have had since 2005. If Rocky was remade, Apollo Creed cannot be white. If Enter The Dragon was remade, you cannot use a caucasian either. Poetic license has morphed into political correctness.

There is no way on earth I would accept a black Bond. As Gravitys Sillhouette so eloquently wrote on Bond and Beyond forum - `If EON `go black', I'll never go back!'

I wouldn't expect Shaft to be played by a white guy. If EON ever dared to do this, I would be hating the franchise more than you guys here. At least you've all had a few years slowy getting used to the idea that you no longer enjoy the franchise. A black Bond would probably not shock you all as much as it would me.

And you are correct BJ. This is not a racist issue, it is just looking at the obvious. Fleming wrote Bond as a white Englishman. Why would Babs want to deviate from that basic description of what Bond is?

I don't think we'll ever have a black Bond. There have been some good points made. I think it's OK to play fast and loose with Felix Leiter though(Jeffrey Wright is my favorite Leiter )

They're old and they don't care about properly maintaining the Bond series anymore, but just trying cash in as much as possible before they retire. People will say that the reboot was done because of things like Austin Powers, and that the Bond series was such a joke. On the contrary, I think the series is a complete joke now with all of these crazy changes and ideas by the producers.

Saintly Saint, our FBF is a creative genius He was way ahead of the curve on the weirdos as Bond, the Imperious curse on the minions placed by Eon's brainwashing, and the casting direction Eon has taken. Well done FBF. Upon is directive, the avatars shall return to normal, right FBF?

Whether you like Skyfall or not............it now seems it definitely will be the highest grossing Bond figure wise (ie though not taking inflation into account).

The early weekend estimate just released by Sony, says the film has now taken a mind boggling $287 million, with $156 mil of that earned just this weekend.

The film grossed another estimated $25.7 mil in UK in its second weekend for a running total of $85.8mil....(more than for the entire run of QOS)

In UK and France the 2nd weekend drops have only been around 20-21%, which will give the film a whopping total eventually......in comparison QOS had massive 2nd weekend drops.

Germany grossed $23.9 mil............biggest opening of 2012

and in other smaller European markets, Bond records were smashed!

I went to see 'Skyfall' for a second time on Saturday, and i only managed to just get a ticket for the last performance, as all the previous viewings were booked up in advance!

As you may know 'Skyfall' has had such good weekday grosses in the UK as well.....that it lead to the film having the highest BO gross here ever for a weeks takings!....around $60 mil.

For me 'Jarvier Bardem' as the villian was fantastic...........there is a scene in the film which left the audience aghast when he reveals to M and Bond his (sorry no clue here )............after that you could see why he wanted revenge!
