The old Bond series did well.

Code: Select all

Fox’s Bond 50 boxed set of 22 James Bond films debuted at No. 4 on the Blu-ray chart, a nice performance for a multidisc collection that carries a price tag north of $100. Bond 50 landed at No. 11 on First Alert, with 91% of its unit sales coming on Blu-ray
Classic Bond series was selling not CR and Quark because people who wanted those movie already bought them where the old series was incomplete and unavailable. The 91% Blu-ray is no surprise since the DVD are the same as several years ago worse each movie is missing a bonus content disc. Very import for the franchise going forward to have old series play a critical role in it's continued survival.

I don't what some of you are thinking on Adele she will get radio play because it is Adele and as long as the song earns a place in the charts, it will fade fast in some territories but it is enough to merit radio play. She moved to #2 on the amazon.com list not necessarily meaning a sales giant to move up the ladder there, we should get real numbers tomorrow. If the studio believed the theme song translated to ticket sales implicitly they'd release Skyfall in the same manner they wont because only a few hundred thousand would buy it instead of millions. Smart for the studio to use Adele which is precisely what they have done however it's primarily Adele fans driving sale over Bond fans, it will get the name of the movie out there perhaps too repetitively it may be a little too soon for the US, but most of the world is getting the movie October 26th. Make no mistake it will be a front loaded movie. The metrics for the movies coming on its heels are much better.

I said all along a few factors will make Skyfall the biggest Bond in years at the BO, and one of them was Adele. She has already hit No. 4 in the UK charts after just 2 days, having sold over 84,000 copies.

Another is the 50th anniversary, of which the marketing campaign is really starting to kick in now here in the UK, with Sky TV running a dedicated 24/7 Bond channel, with constant Bond merchandise adverts and all.

And another was the Olympic boost featuring the Queen.

These will be the 3 main factors for Skyfall's BO success. I also feel the critics will be kinder to this film than they were with Quark, as Skyfall will most likely be a vast improvement on QoS, so the critics will compare and look at Skyfall as a vast improvement. The reason the critics were so harsh on QoS is because it didn't measure up to CR, whereas this time round the benchmark is a lot lower for the critics.

Pollyannaish assessment one I'm sure the studio PR department will reinforce for you shortly. The mechanics of the marketplace is a little more grounded/grinding than the ethereal metrics being used as a weathervane. Great PR, greases the skids but does not completely overcome the entropy involved in filling seats.

I seriously doubt ticket purchase decisions will be swayed by Adele, I doubt any song had real impact besides visibility which by itself is worth it.

Skyfall will reach number one in most if not all territories it is released, studio scheduling practically guarantees this. What will not be mentioned is ticket inflation and screen and/or market growth, records can and will be set selling fewer tickets it's magnificent PR fodder (not just for Bond).
I've looked over Bond market data if it is one it's constant. The hard realities for Skyfall is $700m neighborhood is the extreme high end, and not a real improvement, I'd imagine the studio in house projections are closer to the $640 neighborhood, my expectations are softer for several reasons.

We won't know for sure for several weeks in the meantime you'll be reassured by skilled manipulators applying the science of this business to great effect.

As for the critics who knows. I expect more positive than last time however just improving over Quark isn't much of an improvement and may not be as compelling as you think. QOS had problem not just from a poor director and short cuts taken in the story, they expanded the non-Bondness of the main character in a way most found unpalatable. Given what we know for sure are part of the story it's conceivable there could be backlash from those who might not appreciate the gritty turn Bond on it's head take. I think there will be those who will say this is not what Bond does and not who Bond is, I expect others to say this is why Bond is Bond.. blah.. blah.. blah..
Because it is the 50th I think more attention will be paid to the history of Bond and what made it enjoyable, also being Danny's third and the hype time could be ripe for a critical review of his tenure.
Still there may be more who will want to be part of the crowd and crow about what a unparallelled achievement this is. Basically take every review you disliked about DAD and multiply it

Sorry mate didn't see you added some numbers. I came back to this after doing other things.

Not bad for the UK I had thought it'd be higher. The day it was released could have something to do with it.

My personal thoughts are because of the poor BO results all year (with a few exceptions ie:the Avengers: The Dark Knight) Skyfall will under perform. I'm not saying :007: (I pulled a babs and placed the gun barrel where you were least expecting it)it will tank, because we all know the number 007 puts the butts in the seats. I think it will be #1 at the BO opening week but but overall it will do QOS numbers if even that.

No worries Mazer. Do you know how well the song is doing across the pond? I haven't checked up on this yet.

I could tell you a lot about it I'm not sure how much of it is accurate at this point. I'd guess 186k, projections are anywhere from 200-250k.
I should be number 4 this week or next -music industry isn't my strong suite. But remember here strong song sales are in the millions, I expect a big opener followed by a trial off it won't have the same staying power as one of her albums.

I'll find a link for you if I can. Tomorrow should have the best data.

Years ago, you never heard people ask questions about whether the gun barrel will be at the beginning, or if Q or Moneypenny will be in the film, or if the James Bond theme will be played etc. But now the series is so messed up with the producers lame surprises, people don't know what to expect anymore. Elements that used to be standard in the Bond films, are now things that people wonder will ever come back. I find it funny when I see people on the forums getting excited about Q returning in Skyfall. Even if it is a bizarre reinvention of the character, people are just happy to have him back. It just goes to show that people still want classic Bond.

As for Barbara's obsession with keeping Craig for eternity, she better snap out of it and realize that he can't play Bond forever. If it was not good for Connery or Moore, than it should be the same for Craig. Plus, audiences will just get bored of it. But unfortunately, Barbara doesn't seem to care about the audience. Her fascination for Craig is apparently a good enough reason for him to keep playing Bond until he's an old coot. Ah yes, an elderly Daniel Craig is agent James Bond 007 in Never Say I'm Too Old To Play Bond Again. Umm, no thanks, Barbara.

ouch.
And Daniel Craig is having some issues reading the cue cards, which isn’t helping.
Even in his native tongue, Daniel Craig is just bad at this live sketch show business.
And now we can officially say that no, Daniel Craig is not good at this whole comedy thing.
