I just saw The Hunger Games, and I have to agree. It's very violent. Other than that, it beats the hell of Twilight and filled with escapism.

FBF what was the audience like? I thought at the theater I was at everyone was really into the movie. More than usual.

I didn't pay much attention to the audience.

I thought i'd mentioned that I went to see John Carter of Mars (its real title, whatever Disney says), but looking back on this thread, it appears not. A highly enjoyable blockbuster that deserved to do far better than its lousy marketing campaign allowed.

Me adn Mrs Dr No went to see Hunger Games, the kids are eager to see it but we think the violence is a little to personal. It is a PG13 movie but the hand to hand combat is a little graphic for it to be ok.

It was mentioned in passing, though they didn't dwell on it, as they must have known that having the hero be a Confederate soldier would be problematic for a modern audience.

Maybe why Disney threw it under the bus.

I'm kind of interested in what the mainstream view was 100 years ago of a ex confederate soldier.
The ideas of what the war was about and even what the political parties represented changed over the last 100 for the war and 50 to 60 years for the parties. Primarily neither side was fighting about slavery, the union certainly was not fighting to free the slaves at first, most fighting men of the confederates were not fighting to keep the slaves ( from their POV slaves only kept the rich, rich and the poor, poor). Some if not most of the dark racist animosity in the south didn't come together until after the war and there were a lot of reason for it some of it economic and others of it I think were fomented in the hearts of citizens who were told slavery was righteous and the black man sub human. Its a dark ugly, ungodly, thing that took root in a defeated south. Most of the Confederate Generals did not believe slavery was right or moral (Bobby Lee for instance), one of the generals I forget which one said they (the south) should have freed all the slaves then fired on Sumter.


Democrats today believe they fought for the civil rights movement so now they are the party of minorities, when it was primarily democrats filibustering these rights. Democrat president Woodrow Wilson was one of the worst offenders in our sorry history on this subject. MLK wanted Nixon over Kennedy because he thought the Quaker upbringing would mean a more favorable outcome and it may have.

I remember hearing stories growing up of grandparents and great grandparents generations being told not to talk to "that old man" because he is "an old Republican". many of them and their children would eventually migrate to the party of Lincoln. I also knew older black men who thought the confederacy and the flag was all of us in the south, it at one point represent all of the hardships all of the southern people went through and the remaining rebel spirit (and the solders who fought for it Black and white, and the towns and people lost under the union armys rampage south). Today nobody remembers that part of the history, the south is bad end of story, and with a lot of the past racism (and more of present than i'd like)I can't blame everyone for thinking it. But there was a part of the war that did represent a second American war for independence. It kind of ended up being shoved in our mythology of the conquest of the west and the individualism of the men and women who settled there.


One other odd piece of civil war history connecting to today is Lincoln and Obama do have a lot in common, something Obama realizes and the republicans squawk at. Policy wise Obama and Lincoln would be very comfortable sitting across a table for each other. Just don't let the republicans hear me say it., they'll have kittens

Back on topic the new Muppet movie was decent still not as good as the old Muppets but better than the last couple of movies.

They have, countless times, just not under that name. Man on Fire, Law Abiding Citizen, pretty much every Jean-Claude Van Damme movie....

I just watched The Incredible Hulk. Quite realistic and a worthy reboot compared to CR.

I don't know that any of the movies you mention other than Speed were particularly well-reviewed, and Armageddon is the only other one that was a major hit.

I meant the pairing of movies back when there had to be two asteroid movies and two volcano.

I was thinking of movies that we were supposed to be excited about when I was a kid, Johnny Mnemonic, Judge Dredd, Demolition Man, a bunch of others that were hyped up but were not that good.

I liked Demolition Man. As a long-time Dredd fan, the movie was a huge disappointment to me. Let's hope the new one coming in September is better, but signs don't look good. It looks a bit straight-to-DVD from the stills I've seen.

I wanted to see that. My wife was planning to take some of her piano students as part of the rewards scheme she operates for those who study hard, but she never got around to it, amd I don't think the movie is still in cinemas here.

Red Tails was ok. It was sort of ruined by Lucas who was more FX oriented one of the great stories of wwII was reduced to a average story by a liberal who cares too much to actually tell the real story of these brave men.

Not a bad movie but it don't come close to the real story. I met a Tuskegee airman once incredibly brave man I don't think he could believe how many little white kids were awed by him at least I hope he knew how impressed wewere.

We watched John Carter tonight got to say Disney messed up if they made 10 more JC movies I'd buy them.

IMO it is better than Avatar a better more original story than the SW prequels. It's a little clunky at aometimse but the story is good the acting is good I almost feel as if there should be a extended cut of the movie. Far from being the worst thing from Disney in years it one of the better movies they have made. No where near as bad as the Disney Nicolas Cage movies not Nation Treasure.
