When gleefully writing about the Disney massive misstep reporters actually do a little digging to find out it did not cost $250m rather $350m (someplace have $300m + P&R cost). These guys never estimate or check P&R but it is the determining factor on whether or not these big budget movies make any money. So now the story is John Carter of Mars need to make $600 to $700m to break even. Some places are saying $600m is the break even mark and its not. Gee what other $250+m films that were reported in the last few years as massive successes actually didn't break even, nobody will have the balls to write that story.

John Carter might be remember as a Disney marketing screwup, it is the grandaddy of the the scifi adventures which nobody knew what it supposed to be about. It maybe a decent movie that could have spawned a lucrative franchise, sadly it was marked before it was ever release.

I have to say, I thought the title `John Carter' absolutely bizarre for the type of film and genre it belongs to.
John Carter sounds more like a 70's cop movie about a renegade detective called John Carter....or a gangster flick about someone called John Carter.

When I saw the trailer, my immediate thoughts was that it could be a potential huge disaster, due to the inappropiate title.

If they had just said something like, "From the creator of Tarzan....John Carter of Mars!" or something like that, it might have at least eliminated confusion. You would know, for example, this had nothing to do with "Wrath of the Titans" or
movies like that.

(From the adverts) I was under the impression John Carter was a Conan the Barbarian sort of story. Reading up on the flops news it looks like Disney had a movie they wanted to flop for whatever reason (Tax write off, hiding a loss from something else?)
Most of the people the name John Carter alone would reach died in WWI.

Speaking of bad titles Sween do you think enough will be done promoting Skyfall that it will become associated with the franchise to the causal movie goers.

Living in Bond bubble myself it is hard to tell what people who are not paying attention to every little 007 news story make of the name (if they are aware of it).

That's great!!! :D Congrats!

Napoleon, the consensus which is based on fact (costs vs box office not to mention information we have) is that QoS definitely made the studio book a loss.

I just read about the photograph ridiculousness on the other thread... do these people seriously think they can do stuff like that? And why does no one tell them that abusing of people that are paid for by the tax payers (military police or normal police) is not something they're allowed to do? Unbelievable.

I am so very sorry about John Carter mainly because it stars Taylor Kitsch and I absolutely ADORE him ever since Friday Night Lights. But he'll recover... the movie, however, won't.

Thanks for the congrats everyone....appreciate it.

It's not that big a deal actually. I'm not working there permanently, I've just been chosen as one of the volunteers helping out for the festival at the O2. The good thing is Redford is attending, so I may finally get to meet my hero.

As for the title, I think it will work once the EON marketing machine kicks in, which at the moment is too early. Filming is still underway at the moment, and EON are not really letting that much leak out at this stage. Give it another few months, then once we get the trailer and teaser posters, awareness of the title Skyfall will kick in.

I actually don't mind the title. Out of all the non-Fleming titles EON have come up with for past Bond films, I think this is the best one. It doesn't have any obvious `die' or `dies' in the title, is quite simple and sounds like something Fleming himself would have come up with.

To me, it says "quirky indie dramedy about an accountant undergoing a mid-life crisis, starring that guy who used to be on that TV show". Disney announcing that the film was a huge flop while it's still on release does rather confirm the suspicion that they actually want it to fail. Springtime for Barsoom, anybody?

I thought it was a lot of fun, btw. Pulp sci-fi entertainment on a grand scale - Avatar without the preaching, if you like. And while people may quibble about the budget, there's no denying that every red cent of it is up there on the screen.

Second person to say something about Carter and Avatar....hummm.
Disney coming out the second week saying guess what we failboated it is a surprise.

I still think Skyfall sounds like Terminator or Keanu Reeves movie. Skyfall or Twilight, Hobbit, some names carry the idea of the movie franchise better.

Aside from vampires and Middle Earth, there's Les Miserables adaptation starring Hugh Jackman is coming out in December of this year.

Maybe "Skyfall" should be in a phrase rather than on its own.

Ale presents Smash was renewed for another season even though it's ratings are dropping, but for NBC, it's their best drama show. DWTS is USA tv's number one show in total audience by far, destroying The Voice in total viewership, even though the Voice won slightly in the 18-49 category on Monday. Idol has dropped off huge from it's previous years. The remaining 10 are quite poor IMO.

Good work. Tell Redford to put "3 grand on the red", just like Hooker did in The Sting. "In addition to film screenings, Sundance London will host live music performances and events each evening, including the previously announced opening night event An Evening With Robert Redford And T Bone Burnett, Placebo in concert and Tricky and Martina Topley-Bird performing Maxinquaye. Also on offer to Sundance London audiences will be unique opportunities to attend panels and hear guest speakers, such as DCINB's The Sweeney, talk about the part they play in making films, documentaries and the role of music in modern cinema."

Who knew a teen age girl and bow could be Box Office gold.
DEADLINE EXCLUSIVE: I’ve just learned that the first international numbers coming in for the opening of Lionsgate’s The Hunger Games tonight are gigantic. The hotly anticipated movie scored a huge $1.8 million (USD) in Australia. (For the record, the gross was AUS 1,741,000 on 471 screens which is about $1.8M USD.) My sources say that’s bigger than the debuts down under for Iron Man ($1.0M) and Quantum Of Solace ($1.0M), although not Transformers 2 ($2.1M). The pic opens worldwide day-and-date on an estimated 7,700 prints everywhere except for a handful of markets (which include Spain, Italy, South Africa, Japan, South Korea, Venezuela).

Lets hope at least SKYFALL is watchable, without all the fuzzy wuzzy filming techniques that were used in QOS.

With the editor from CR and Mendes as director, the film should be followable.

Just hope its a good film with a good story.
