New Star Trek Got It Right

Post by commander0077again »

After noting the new Star Trek film to be released sometime next summer, it occurred to me how the filmmakers got the first one right, unlike when Bond was left without his boots. Imagine if Spock had been replaced by Daniel Craig! Yet, they found an actor who greatly physically resembles the original Spock, down to his mannerisms. Of course, I wouldn't want a Bond actor to copy Connery or Brosnan's mannerisms, but Star Trek didn't fool around with the mold. If only JJ Abrams had been around when Casino Royale was being cast. We could only hope that he would have found a more suitable lead actor. ST continued in the near-perfect casting in Kirk, McCoy, with excellent music and technical values, a fine storyline that, while innovative, didn't totally depart from the Star Trek universe. I'm not a super Trek fan, not one to watch a marathon, etc., but I do know the history, and the new series is a very welcome addition. While Trekkers find fault in various aspects, I don't think they dislike the new leads -- unlike the anti-Craig group, of which I am honored to be associated.

Yes, the makers of Star Trek seem to have made a conscious decision to keep the trappings of the old TV series (the first thing you hear in the film is the instantly recognisable "red alert" sound, for example) while radically reinventing the core concepts, making it seem both familiar and fresh at the same time. EON, on the other hand, junked about 90% of the Bond formula while ridiculing those who want to see them in a Bond film as whiny little babies in need of their security blanket.

Another thought came to my unfertile mind .... Babs Roddenberry, long-lost niece to Star Trek's creator has the franchise tossed in her lap, and she produces Trek Wars, starring Daniel Craig as Spock.

Stardate 57.99.00No. Captain's log. Our new science officer has just been assigned. I .... am ... not certain if he is the right man for the job, after reading his qualifications .... Born on the cold planet of Inebria of an Italian earth father Darth Bush Sr. and a stripper from the planet Everlasts. Mister Spock was admitted for Academy training by an infusion of capital for the new playing field by the Golden Gate, Bush Field.

BRIDGE

The new science officer walks in. "Commander Spock reporting for duty, Captain." Spock wrenches the bridge door apart with his sinewy hands, his lats filling the doorway. Female personnel gasp, especially Lt. Babs; nearsighted Lt. Uhura coos.

Kirk: "Mister Spock. Your .... background .... interests me how did a science officer who flunked basic chemistry get assigned to my -- ship?" Kirk's eyes bulges as he reads Spock's IQ score of 53.

"Go bleep yourself, Captain. You think I give a bleep? For your info, pretty boy, my daddy bought me this berth. He can buy this whole bleeping ship if he wannas!" Lt. Babs is almost in a faint, trembling by the bulkhead.

Sulu : "Captain! An unknown craft, 2000 meters!"

Kirk : "Enlarge!"

An ominous dark visage fills the screen, heavily borrowing from another series. "I am your .... father, Captain ... and Lt. Babs IS YOUR SISTAH!!!!"

Spock : "Wha? What's he sayin'? Can't understand the blank with all that heavy breathing. Tell him to lose that stupid mask and nazi helmet!"

Lt. Babs faints, Spock's rippling abs just too much for the poor girl.
You move very well for a dead man, Mister Bond

You know I do not feel about Star trek reboot liek I do about the Bond, Star trek despite the stars saying this is not you father Trek actually pay homage to the original and are fun. The only thing I wonder about is why the tech looks so different than the Tv show. Maybe it is a story we never got to see in season 5 enterprise.

The difference is Bond took swings and openly hates the 40 years of movies l love, I mean the awful singer who did the CR theme song openly tears down Pierce, what a load. The reboot i s a failure because I don't expect Craig to ever meet Dr no or Goldfinger, or any of the classic bad guys nor be able to go toe to toe with them if he did by some fatal error catch up with those guys.

The last film was not my favourite incarnation of Trek but still fun. I think you can do lots of things with Trek (time travel, alternate universes, have a new crew years after the last etc) but as Bond is more realistic it was just silly when Craig turned up as a rookie in a crappy prequel.

I hope you didn't give a 7. Otherwise, that would make you like a Pro-Craig minion.

I'd give it 7 or 8 - 8 if it ensures I do not have Craig minion status.

If I remember correctly, here's what our friend Blowfeld said regarding ST reboot being out on DVD:

A very dark day indeed for Star Trek fans. Nov 16th, a day that will live in infamy!
And his response to my questions regarding a dark day for ST fans and if he will buy it or not.
Star Trek is an affront to the rich history and spirit of the original Trek. I will not be buying it.

Unfortunately this will do good business and convince the studios that this Star Wars influenced mutated version of Star Trek is what they should make more of. I am not talking about the actors only the writing that lacks the depth a Star Trek adventure should have.
Now that sounds like a Pro-Craig minion right here. Seems like our friend has forgot that anything is preferrable over Bond (who is nothing but a zombie now) these days. And I'm not saying movies Jaws: The Revenge and Batman & Robin are more watchable than DC's Bonds. The Revenge and B&R are just laughing stocks and a bad comedy in an unintentional way while DC's Bonds are just nothing more than an EVIL propaganda, corrupting the minds of a younger audience. They're just unwatchable in a different way. I know some Trek purists have a sour taste about Trek reboot the same way we have for Bond reboot, but Trek was dead in the water and ended being stale after the failure of Star Trek Nemesis and the cancellation of Enterprise. It needed a reboot a lot more than Bond. Besides, the old Trek still exist according to the writers of the reboot. Remember this, better for the Trek reboot films make money and do business than DC's Bonds (which its third entry NEEDS to CRASH and BURN, especially here in the US). Trek reboot worth buying a lot more than DC's Bonds, and it grosses over $257 million in the US market. Now that's more than any of the two DC's Bonds. You should happy that new Trek put these corrupted Bond to shame in terms of US box office numbers.

I know, but Blowfeld being negative on the new Trek sounds a Pro-Craig minion. That's just me though and my views of anything is preferrable over Bond (now a zombie) these days.

I'd watch these over new bond and that's difficult enough as it is Image Image

bond: hey....so did you
no don't even ask. anyway how's things with you
bond: do I look like I give a d**n, anyway some woman betrayed me who I loved, didn't know her that long really but it felt like the best time of my life.
hah...hah...hah....what a story james bond.
bond: yeah you can bloody say that again
....anyway how's your sexlife
bond:.........raaaawwwwr, bond smash.
Bond....James bond....Rest in peace (1964-2002)

 I love campy old scifi sets that wobble and substance over flash bang...are you going to sue me?

I do not think they are capable of capturing today what was wonderful in TOS, they gave Star Trek the Star Wars treatment, to each their own I suppose.

We don't want it too campy. Trek reboot was realistic in a futuristic sense, but it was funnier than TNG films. Sue you? Community service for Jerry is more appropriate.

But Trek was dying at the end of the Berman era. It needed to attract the main audience to survive. I hope you still going to give the sequel a chance.

I thought TNG were funnier; but then the TNG crew can make me laugh easily as they are cult figures.

Strek was the kind of Reboot Bond need I mean they didn't ditch Starships, transporters and tricorders, Kirk was still like Kirk, Spock was not a depressed black guy sulking with Bond...I mean Kirk.

Another "reboot" that seems to have largely got it right is the revival of another iconic British cinematic brand, Hammer Films. They're not simply doing the same thing that they were doing in the '50s and '60s, that would be commercial suicide. But it's clear that the people behind the revival are massive fans of classic Hammer, and they honour the studio's legacy at every turn in their promotional materials - a far cry from Barbie and Ken's daddy issues.

Are they making movies again? That question is probably rhetorical as I will look up NHammer on Google. :D
