Because for a long time (roughly 1995-2005), he was the only actor whose name above the title was guaranteed to bring in audiences. Who else could have made The Pursuit of Happyness a #1 movie at the box office? I think Depp is taking his place, though. As you say, Smith hasn't made a movie in 3 years, and only has Men In Black 3 in the pipeline (having to rely on sequels to your earlier hits is rarely a good sign). Whereas I doubt that Tim Burton's Alice In Wonderland would have joined the billion-dollar club without Depp.oscartheman wrote:Will Smith hasn't made a movie in years I don't know why everybody makes a big deal over him.

Which is why Jack Sparrow never be recast with Craig, so we can get a glum-sour-faced pirate Walt Disney always intended.
Jackman would be interesting as Sparrow, he was who the writers wanted in the first place. But then we are back to Danny boy and his romance with Bond, a man who can not land/lead a role into box office gold on his own. Cowboys & Aliens was a disaster even if Universal had only spent the $100m originally intended. Of course UNI did not spend more the $50m so the studio is coming out of it pretty well. Dream Works sunk too much into Craig playing a anorexic cowboy. Supposedly Spielberg was approached about making the A Steady Rain, the fan boy would think with Craig but honestly Spielberg will not have time to make such a movie until 2014 to 2015 at which point Craig my by old news, and a bigger point if he is no long cleaning Babs pool have he will have absolutely no draw, not to be headliner. Unless GWTDT launches him properly then it is becoming less likely his charmed career will continue, the more audience speaks the less likely it is Craig will be the next Brad Pitt.
BTW here is that charming charismatic young man. Looking oh-so-much like Bond and not a common criminal/registered sex offender

UHM, they'll be forced to rewrite a seemingly opening action sequence with an Indian train involved? AND this will be based on Carte Blanche? LMAO I SERIOUSLY hope whoever wrote the above just doesn't know what they're saying. Because, Carte Blanche? I'm at a loss for words. Not to mention ,the script should have been done AGES ago if it's based on that book, since it requires nothing but a screenplay version of stuff that's already done. Unreal.

Eon released an official statement denying Carte Blanche. Odd thing is some fan sites are acting like the Serbian girl is a bad guy for misspeaking or whatever happened.

I didn't even know that about EOn. I'm totally out of the loop, only tennis for me these days LOL Well good to know but even if they denied it, it may simply mean they didn't officially use it, may still have ripped stuff off of it, as it seems? LOL Anyhow. Really, really bad.Omega wrote:Eon released an official statement denying Carte Blanche. Let me guess: a CGI Daniel Craig will do a an OTT by the numbers action stunt and the Daniel-Craig-Is Fleming's-Bond fraternity will portray it as a "Conneryesesque gritty stunt where you feel Bond is in danger unlike those cartoonish Brosnan movies".Apparently that’s the case, since Hindustantimes reports that Indian Railways officials had a problem with how the scene was initially depicted in the script by Neal Purvis, Robert Wade and John Logan; specifically, the moment where Bond leaps off a motorcycle onto a moving train, the roof of which is loaded with freeloading passengers.

Re: The BJMDDS General Discussion Thread......
Bond is back – again. Fans of the suave super-spy can get ready to be shaken and stirred once again as the twenty-third instalment in the film series is slated for release in November 2012. That may be over a year away, but why not whet your appetite with our handy guide to the top five things we already know about the mysterious Bond 23?
1. It will be filmed in India. The Indian government has given the Bond crew permission to shoot in Mumbai, Delhi and Goa, a production company confirmed to the BBC. There is speculation that the Indian Railway Minister has been asked for permission for a sequence to be shot aboard a train, and he is quoted as saying that “I want Daniel Craig to be the brand ambassador for Indian Railways.” Bond 23 will be only the second Bond film to be shot in India. Let’s just hope it’s better than Octopussy.
2. Sam Mendes will direct it. Variety confirmed that Bond 23 will be directed by Sam Mendes, who his better known for ponderous dramas such as American Beauty and Revolutionary Road, and for being separated from Kate Winslet. Will he have Bond soulfully contemplating a plastic bag caught on the wind?
3. It might star Ralph Fiennes (and some other people). Rumours about who will star in Bond films – especially at this distance – are notoriously unreliable. However, buzz seems to be building around the idea that Ralph Fiennes is going to pop up in this one, with SlashFilm naming him alongside Javier Bardem and Naomie Harris as good bets for the new film.
4. It’s going to have loads of product placement. The Bond franchise has never been shy of hawking itself to the highest bidder and Bond 23 looks like being no exception. The Australian reported that an entire third of the budget for the new film will be contributed by brands paying to be featured in it, resulting in what the paper called “the biggest product-placement bonanza in cinema history.” Doesn’t that sound exciting?
5. It will not be called Carte Blanche. A story appeared in Serbian newspaper Blic this week claiming that Bond 23 was going to be based on, and named after the ‘007 continuation novel’ Carte Blanche by Jeffery Deaver. This story isn’t true, apparently. Scarily well-informed fansite MI6-HQ quoted one of the film’s producers, who shot the story down. “The new film is not going to be called Carte Blanche and will have nothing to do with the Jeffery Deaver book,” they said, which sounds pretty categorical. The real name will no doubt emerge in the next couple of months.

More than a word from 007's sponsors
John Harlow, in Los Angeles From: The Australian May 02, 2011 12:00AM
ONE-THIRD of the budget for the next James Bond film is to come from brands that will appear on screen, making it the biggest product-placement bonanza in cinema history.
Under a deal struck between the MGM studio and the film's distributor, Sony, $45 million will be raised from companies wanting their brands displayed on screen, says a New York marketing executive.
The figure is twice the previous record, held by Steven Spielberg's Minority Report, released in 2002. Lexus, Bulgari and American Express together paid about $20m to appear in the film.
Although the new production, codenamed Bond23, is not due to reach cinemas before November next year, when the world's most successful film franchise will be celebrating its 50th anniversary, Sony is already establishing brand "ambassadors" to liaise with potential sponsors including, for the first time, Chinese technology entrepreneurs.

Amazing how Naomie Harris went from a sure thing to a shady rumor! If I were writing it I'd have Fiennes step in as M near the middle, knowing how the series is after Casino Royale he will be a dark shady character Bond is not sure is he is a member of the sinister [s]Quantum[/s] Qantas Airlines. Fiennes the new M is harsh on Bond sending him on an impossible mission from which he is unlikely to return. Bond has little room to complain since it is a mission to avenge the assassination of previous M, who was murdered by the agent she trusted most. Bond.bjmdds wrote: 3. The new M sweeps into power making the first order of businesses the disposal of the murderer and those behind it in one sure move.
The new M brings with him an executive assistant Moneypenny.

Yup. They were telling us to conserve energy because even though they have things things fixed and it was human error, the local power grid was being taxed. Luckily, our weather has been cool the last few days-we really caught a break on that one-so less need for air conditioners and the like.
