Cowboys and creatures from outer space might seem a strange mix for a hit movie but with a cast which includes Daniel Craig, Harrison Ford and Olivia Wilde, Cowboys and Aliens is shaping up to be a box-office winner.


“It’s first time I’ve played a cowboy and it was great to get to ride a horse,” says 43-year-old Daniel Craig.”It certainly makes a change from James Bond!”

The star who can make $30 million a movie when playing 007 was happy to take a massive pay-cut and spend weeks in the New Mexico desert playing a cowboy in a 19th century western town which is invaded by murderous aliens.

“OK it sounds a strange mixture — I think they call it a genre mash-up — but it certainly works and it was great fun to make,” says Cheshire-born Craig. “And Harrison Ford has been a hero of mine for years. Working with him and getting to know him was a thrill. He’s an incredibly generous and funny man.”

Although he has been James Bond since 2006 and is contracted to do four more 007 epics — the next due out next year — Daniel is determined to make other movies, too. Indeed he will be constantly in front of the cameras for the rest of the year, making Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, the Adventures of Tintin and Secret of the Unicorn.

“Life is really busy and happy at the moment,” Daniel says, referring not only to his soaring movie career but his recent marriage to Hollywood star Rachel Weisz , which was one of show-business’s more modest events — there were only four guests including Craig’s 18-year-old daughter and Rachel’s four-year old son...

As usual. Craig did all his own stunts in Cowboys and Aliens. “I wanted to be a stuntman when I was a boy,” he remembers. “I actually liked falling off my bike and hurting myself!”

Now his dream has come true — much to the chagrin of movie bosses who are spending millions on insurance premiums...

Making his last Bond movie, Quantum of Solace, Daniel was rushed to hospital in South Africa with a bruised eye and a fractured arm only days after needing eight stitches after an accidental kick in the face. He also suffered cuts and bruises when an Aston Martin he was driving overturned and ended up in Italy’s Lake Geneva.

“Dangerous stunts are all part of playing James Bond, and I feel fans would be cheated if I got stunt doubles to do everything that was the slightest bit risky,” Daniel says. Insiders say that previous James Bonds have let stunt doubles do most of the dangerous sequences, but Daniel insists on facing danger himself, even though he knows the risks.

“I accept that I will probably need a lot more plastic surgery within five years if I keep making Bond movies,” he says. “But that’s all part of the job!”

So it seems, are serious death threats — Daniel got plenty of them when he took over from Pierce Brosnan to play James Bond in the remake of Casino Royale, which was hailed by many critics as the best 007 film ever.

“I certainly didn’t realise that people took Bond so seriously,” he says. “The Internet was full of threats to bump me off!” Becoming 007 has brought some pretty drastic lifestyle changes, including a rigorous fitness regime. “I was in pretty good shape but I knew I had to bulk up and look bigger and stronger so I now have a personal trainer and do a really tough routine — working out with weights,sit-ups — the lot!” “Being fit was also useful in Cowboys and Aliens — there were a lot of fight and action scenes although some were computer-generated.”

The last few years have certainly been amazing for Daniel. He earned a reported $15 million as star of the smash-hit action movie Tomb Raider co-starring Angelina Jolie, and was tipped for an Oscar nomination for the movie Some Voices, in which he played a schizophrenic released from hospital.

“I’ve been so lucky,” Daniel says. Playing Bond and now riding a horse, carrying a gun and co-starring Harrison Ford. Just what more could a guy want out of life..?

I thought it was spoof because there are so many egregious errors.... maybe it is serious.

The Times of Oman appears to be a legitimate newspaper. If it's a satire, it's an extremely subtle one. Of course, by "legitimate", I simply mean "not a spoof". After all, how many times did the "Craig wants a gay Bond" story turn up in "proper" newspapers (and get breathlessly reposted here by well-meaning noobs)?
