007 MAGAZINE wins its complaint against ‘MI6 Confidential’

Claims on MI6 Confidential magazine’s website advertising a James Bond magazine included the quote, “MI6 Confidential is the only professionally created James Bond magazine available exclusively in print.”

007 MAGAZINE & ARCHIVE Limited challenged whether the claim was misleading and could be substantiated in a complaint to the Advertising Standards Authority.

After assessing the complaint the Advertising Standards Authority found in favour of 007 MAGAZINE & ARCHIVE Limited and sanctioned the action that the MI6 Confidential ad must not appear again in its current form.

007 MAGAZINE editor & publisher Graham Rye said: “This was a rather obvious and unsubtle jab at me and my 32-year old publication 007 MAGAZINE by this fledgling publication.” Paraphrasing a James Bond line of dialogue from the 1962 007 film Dr. No, Rye commented: “It would appear to be a case of minnows pretending to be whales, and they are most definitely the wrong side of the glass!”

I don't think the mag has to close down, it just means they can't use false advertising any more.

I think you're right. They probably post a retraction and continue on.

This doesn't mean you have to read it, Katied. 8)

This makes me wonder, when is TheMi6Forum going to release their much anticipated publication?

Good for Graham Rye. I have some excellent vintage editions of 007 Magazine and he was around long before these MI6 jokers and the internet.

There's more - there is a piece in the Guardian.

James Bond battle leaves magazine shaken but not stirred

007 Magazine gets complaint upheld that rival MI6 Confidential falsely claimed it is read in 37 countries

James Bond's activities may have been for his bosses' eyes only, but now a battle between magazines focusing on the spy hero is out in the open.

It seems the advertising exploits of MI6 Confidential – the young upstart of Bond fanzines launched in 2007 – has ruffled the well-tailored lapels of veteran title 007 Magazine.

The publisher of 007 Magazine – founded in 1979 "for James Bond lovers only!" – filed a complaint with the Advertising Standards Authority arguing the claims MI6 Confidential made about sales and readership of its rival were misleading.

MI6 Confidential says on its website that its Bond title is "read by thousands of fans in 37 countries worldwide".

007 Magazine claims on its website that its Bond title is read in "over 40 countries".

MI6 Confidential sent the ASA partially redacted email addresses that, the publisher said, proved online sales of the magazine through Amazon and PayPal and substantiated the claims it makes on its website.

However, the ASA said any claims about distribution or readership for print magazines need to be independently verified by a body such as the Audit Bureau of Circulations to prove they are "accurate and verifiable".

The ASA said that because this had not been done MI6 Confidential's claims were misleading and should not appear on its website.

However, in true anti-establishment Bond form, MI6 Confidential appears to have ignored the directive and continues to run the claim online.

The fact that MI6 Confidential is continuing to claim that they are still claiming they are the biggest and the best proves what a$$holes they are. :cuss:

25 or so years ago, i belonged to Graham Rye's International Bond club, and i received the 007 magazine.........
they were excellent, and i've still got them, as there are not many around i've heard they are quite a collectors piece.
The ones ive got are around the Timothy Dalton era.

Mr Rye is not beyond reproach. Seems he has been up to no good too:

In email correspondence about a reprinted article, he called me (a customer) a c*nt. Nice guy.

Sounds like a petty tit-for-tat complaint by MI6. The ruling just seems to say that his claims need to be better documented.
