Martin Campbell Calls QoS "lousy" and "a mess"

Post by Alessandra »

The Hollywood Reporter: "Casino Royale Director Calls Quantum of Solace "A Mess"
With Green Lantern currently at the box office, its director, Martin Campbell, is taking the opportunity to get some three-year-old gripes off his chest. The director is credited with giving the James Bond franchise the reboot it needed with 2006’s Casino Royale starring Daniel Craig, but he says the movie’s sequel, 2008's Quantum of Solace, didn’t quite keep the momentum going.

Oh, I thought it was lousy,” Campbell tells CraveOnline. “And hopefully this next one will be terrific. Sam Mendes is directing it and I’m sure it’ll be terrific.”

We do hope that Mendes (Revolutionary Road) lives up Martin’s expectations on Bond 23, because it seems he’ll probably hear about it later.

“I just thought the story was pretty uninteresting,” Campbell goes on to say about Quantum of Solace. “I didn’t think the action was related to the characters. I just thought overall it was a bit of a mess really.”

THANK YOU Martin Campbell for calling things by their name.

And I'm sure he loves Mendes, just like I absolutely appreciate him... just NOT FOR BOND having zero experience in action flicks. Let's hope Campbell is right, for the sake of the franchise, which means the movie will just be barely acceptable, seen as with the script and zero casting premise at this point there's no way they produce anything anywhere near "great".

If Martin is right about Bond 23 being better than QOS, bring in Carrot Top as the next Bond.

IN one way they can't get mush worse than Quark, on the other hand they appear to be in preparation for QOS 2: The Quickening.

It wouldn't good on our side if Bond 23 makes more money at the box office than both CR and QOS, especially here in the US. That would mean Babs wanting to keep DC for more than 3 Bonds. If only Star Trek sequel is pushed back for November release, Bond 23 will be completely forgotten.

He had said all of this before. Although it is startling how many Bond alumni are washing their hands of Quark  If Bond 23 is Quark part 2 then they will be in real trouble. They said the right things after it was made clear to them QOS was a POS however since then they have reneged on all those promises and are going full tilt at Emo Bond part 3.

And if Bond 23 is makes more money than QOS and even CR (especially here in the US), we're the ones who are going to be in real trouble.

FBF, there is no way Bond 23 makes more money than either CR or QoS, let alone Potter. By the way things are shaping up to be, there's no chance of that happening for the simple fact they're SO d**n late with basic production things that they will be obliged to rush things and cram something together last-minute, and that's a recipe for disaster. Not to mention, the (very) few facts we have on Bond 23 indicate clearly they're going for EMO Bond in Bond 23/QoS: the return of the stinker. So really... we should be worried more about the franchise going away for good if they produce such an utterly disastrous movie. I just hope in a way Campbell is right in that this MUST NOT tank the franchise. I want them to be taught a lesson, sure... but I don't want the franchise to tank. A solid box office disappointment will be enough for that I think. Mazer is right, they pretended they HAD understood that QoS was beyond terrible back then after horrible critics, but in reality they understood nothing and are producing more of the same (or at least so it seems so far). So really, I think the true danger for now is us losing the franchise for good, which I will NOT accept. Craigster will be done after this one and I WANT someone who actually looks and behaves like Bond to play Bond. That someone is Henry Cavill. It better happen.

Personally, i think its Martin Campbell's fault for not filming QOS, ie finishing off the story he started in CR.

Even if he was given the exact same storyline, i reckon Campbell could of turned QOS at the very least into a very watchable film.

To show how some people apart from ourselves were dissapointed with the last Bond film, i have read many comments on QOS, some people were so upset with the film, that i remember one forum member mentioned that the 'editors of QOS should be murdered at home in front of there children', and another stating that 'Campbell should be forced to continue making Bond films until he dies'. Blimey!

He'd probably still have had Dan Bradley and his jellycam forced upon him.

Campbell is overrated and he is the best they have after John Glen left. What they need to do is be on the lookout for the next Terence Young. John Glen and Martin Campbells' of the world will make decent movies to make great movies Bond needs a Terence Young. Any candidates out there>?

No director could have saved Quantum of Solace. It's like expecting Anton Mosimann to make a nice meal with wallpaper paste and gravel.

Welcome, Jor-El. The trouble is, the main thing Terence Young seems to have brought to the Bond films is that he taught Sean Connery how to act like a gentleman. And the success of Dr No wasn't just down to Young and Connery. Peter Hunt's fast-paced editing, John Barry's revolutionary use of jazz and pop influences in the music, Ken Adam's production design, Maurice Binder's stylish titles and Richard Maibaum's witty script all contributed. Add to that the zeitgeist-capturing power of Ian Fleming's mixture of exotic locations, beautiful women (that iconic shot of Ursula Andress emerging from the waves certainly didn't hurt!) and a British spy solving global problems at a time when British power was on the wane, and I'm not sure that the circumstances that created Bondmania in the '60s can ever be fully replicated.
