Not Bond but...

Postby Kristatos » Sat Nov 27, 2010 12:07 am

The OSS 117 movie Cairo: Nest of Spies is on BBC4 tomorrow (Saturday 27th November) at 9pm. Sadly, I am currently sans TV, so I won't be able to watch it.

Can't afford the licence fee. I'm out of work, but my wife is getting more private piano students, so I'm hoping Santa might give me a TV Licence for Christmas.

The film is available on iPlayer for the next week or so, so I might watch it there. You don't need a licence for that.

The TV licence is quite cheap, but then there a million other things to pay for!

Are you tempted to put the telly on without buying a licence? I'm sure my family never used to buy one when I was young, but maybe they were scaring me as I was always frightnened of the TV detector van.

I don't like the idea of being a free rider, getting services I'm not paying for. It is humiliating enough being unemployed and having to live on the benefits I'm legally entitled to, without adding theft into the equation. And yes, I do believe that watching TV without paying the licence fee is theft.

I pay the licence too as i like the BBC! TV *and radio) would suffer without it.

Is it still free if you have a black and white tv?
What if you don't watch BBC channels?
But yeah I agree, you have to have a tv licence in the UK.

I'm so sorry to hear that Kristatos. I'm sure you're aware there are plenty of online places where you can watch for free though? Like the one you mentioned of course. I hope things look up soon for you! Hang in there!!

All the best with the job hunting Kris.
What is it that you do? What are the prospects like at present?
Here's hoping that 2011 bring you a little more luck.

I was a civil servant for 15 years in the UK and worked for state government in the US. So my background is public sector administration. Prospects not good at present, with all these public sector cuts to pay for bailouts for Posh Dave's old school chums. Edit: my wife did buy me a TV licence for Christmas, though, and one of her piano students' parents kindly gave us an old TV they had no further use for. Just got to get it hooked up now.
