Gadgety Inspiration

Post by MichaelZWilliamson »

Most of you probably don't know my day job is, "writer." I get to test and review firearms, outdoor gear and disaster preparedness supplies. I write about people blowing stuff up. I write about futuristic warfare.

Bond movies definitely inspired me, and I'm working on sticking more gadgets into my current contracted novels. Chameleon camouflage, disguised weapons, flammable perfumes, perhaps.

In the unlikely event I ever get a movie contract, I'll definitely put in the agreement that neither Craig nor Moore are to be cast in the lead role. Not that it's likely to be a problem, but HWood IS stupid.

It could easily happen. The movie business is bizarre as lots of people are asked to contribute during the development of a movie. For example, a company exectutive may ask her boyfriend who has little experience of scriptwriting to write a script! Look at James Bond: little known actor Daniel Craig who is miles away from the classic Bond look becomes Bond because he is a "close personal friend" of Barbara Broccoli.

Yup, I've done work on shows for Outdoor Channel and Discovery Channel. It's like making sausage. You REALLY don't want to see what goes in.

Did you work on that Futureweapons series? If I was ever commissioned to write a Bond film, that would be absolutely the first place I'd look for inspiration for cool gadgets.

Chameleon camouflage
I saw a show not long ago that had more on this concept not as far fetched as some think.
Sound like pretty cool job. Getting to test and write about all of it. Did you have an interest in before or develop a knowledge of it do the job?

I served 25 years Army and Air Force doing forward support and engineer work. The AF has all kinds of nifty gadgets, some of which I can even talk about.

From there I just asked around, and got offers, to start testing stuff. I have a laser/light combo for a pistol here right now, an awesome set of hearing protection and a survival kit. Two rifles are en route. They want me to return those, though.

I'm in front, in the black Tshirt.

Well, I've seen the Discovery UK release of When Aliens Attack (US release is still in post production). It's not bad. They actually listened to the scientists, and to me.
