Commercialism

Post by Dr. No »

Wow! :o Thanks for this board! :D
Got something that Ive been wanting to say.
Aside from Daniel Craig, whom we (my wife and our family) absolutely do not like as James. I was struck by the commercialism in Casino Royale. Bond movies always have been exploitative –remembering back to the good ol’ days of the 7up billboards placed conveniently in front of the camera. But it was even worse in the latest film.
The movie was centered around the products more than normal or so it seemed.
Always knew the advertisements were there, maybe it was more obvious this time out.
Maybe it was just me.

Casino Royale was very heavy on the products but it isn't anything new. Most of the Bond films suffer from this. Although I think the Ford Motor Company stuff in Casino Royale threatened to spiral out of control once or twice.

Oh boy If I had to stare at one more Sony product I thought I'd puke.

For a second I thought even them defribulator was made by Sony.

The important thing is that most of the Sony crap was at least important to move the plot along.

The Bacardi thing and the Ford Commercial go down as some of the worst along with the Moonraker 7Up ad and the Goldeneye Perrier crash.

There was also a Perrier crash in TLD too from what I remember (opening in Gibraltar).

Oh I forgot about that. All I remembered from that scene was the tables with the initials JB.

Wasn't there a Perrier truck in GoldenEye. Where Bond drives a tank through it.

I guess ad placement is king now adays. :( All though it never seemed as bad as it was in the last movie. Anyone remember I Robot or the Island? 2hr advertisements disguised as movies. Hell pirates of the Caribbean is one big live action ad for the amusement park.

There is a place for name dropping and expensive products in Bond movies. Fleming loved to mention the finer things in his books after all.

Ford and Sony whored out Casino royale for all it was worth. The next step is the nascar look.

Wasn't all of Brosnans films just extended adverts? I think so....

Remember Die Another Day set the record for product placement with $120 million worth of deals with twenty four various companies for product placement and/or tie-ins, Royale cut down considerably.

Royale cut down or was cut down?
placements this last time out were the worst in long time.

Long pauses on the Ford/sony products would have been embarrassing in any film.

Every Bond film has had product placement, from Dr. No to Casino Royale. Die Another Day had the most, and the most apparent. The only reason you remember Royale's more is because you saw it on the big screen most recently.
