Season 8 the last for 24, time to tackle James Bond

Season 8 will be the final series of 24, the second longest-running espionage-themed series in television history, much to the disappointment of its millions of fans the world over.

The Fox Network on Friday confirmed that the exploits of Jack Bauer, at least as far as television is concerned, is drawing to a close with the series finale airing on May 24, 2010.

24, which even surpassed the original "Mission Impossible" in terms of number of episodes made, has run its course with Kiefer Sutherland confirming that they wanted to finish on a high note.

The American serial action/drama television series which is broadcast by Fox in the United States and syndicated worldwide started appearing on viewer's screens in November of 2001.

Described by Sutherland as the 'role of a lifetime' it revolves around a U.S. Counter Terrorist Unit who are forced to bring down the worst terrorists and villains on Earth during a 24-hour period in the life of Jack Bauer.

Each season is presented in the semblance of real time, taking place over 24 episodes each representing an hour.

At it's peak it ruled the television drama category achieving no less than 68 Emmy Awards winning both 'best drama series' and 'best actor' (Sutherland) along the way.

Unfortunately ratings began to drop with the last episode drawing only 9 million viewers in the United States, as opposed to last season's average of over13 million.

In terms of the networks that's called committing suicide.

Sutherland and executive producer Howard Gordon are now working on creating a feature film based on the series.

Who knows it may just end up outstripping the James Bond movies. They did after all blow away all competition on television.

If people won't even watch it on TV any more, why would they pay to see it at the movies? Sounds like it could go the way of the last X-Files movie.
