Martin Campbell disliked QOS
http://www.mi6.co.uk/news/index.php?ite ... mi6&s=news
Two-time James Bond director Martin Campbell, who ushered in both the Pierce Brosnan and Daniel Craig eras, has spoken about the rumours of British helmer Sam Mendes taking on Bond 23.
"Sam will do a splendid job", Campbell said. "I felt Quantum of Solace completely lost its way. We were lucky on 'Casino Royale', it was the origin story of Bond. Bond had the one and only affair that meant anything to him, and affected him throughout the rest of the series."
"I had sympathy for the writers after Casino Royale because clearly the guy can’t have another meaningful relationship, he’s been **** over by the last one. But you’ve got to do something with the character, he’s got to go somewhere."
"I’m sure Sam and Peter Morgan will come up with something. The secret to Bond is to remember it’s Bond. It’s been successful for 22 incarnations. There are a lot of elements that work, so don’t **** with them."

Wow. Quite something to see someone close to the Bond films saying they hated QOS!James wrote:http://www.mi6.co.uk/news/index.php?ite ... mi6&s=news

I am not certain how much he spoke to the rumours. Here is the original interview
This story can be found at Martin Campbell: Interview with Time Out FilmWhat do you think of Sam Mendes directing the next Bond movie?

I think any sort of negative comments might put him on EON's "No directing" list.

Part of the interview Campbell gave to the guardian
In the interview John Patterson offered his opinion that critical consensus holds that Casino Royale sailed much closer to the spirit of Ian Fleming's books. When it departed from it radically. It appears people get confused by Casino Royale the tome and assume that the torturer and aftermath there of in the movie somehow match the book. The book was not about a dark fucked up man drinking too much. There were dark chapters near the end of the book where Ian tried to use twisted logic to show 007s inner struggle.
This Story can be found at Martin Campbell: Living on the edge. "To be honest, I get too much credit for that," he says. "Timing was more important on both movies. With GoldenEye, the franchise got locked into this legal fight. They couldn't make new Bond movies for about seven years. It was my first huge production. I figured if I did at least a yeoman-like job, it would be greeted as a complete revival of the series." He did, it was – and 10 years later, he returned to launch Craig.
"The producers felt it had gone off the rails a bit after Die Another Day [the last Brosnan outing], with invisible cars and all that. I told them, we have to go back to the books. We even discussed doing it as a period piece." He laughs. "We settled on a more fucked-up character with a dark streak in him, drinking too much, dodgy liver – all that's in the book. In Casino, he also had a real relationship with a woman. He doesn't just have a dozen for king and country."

Martin Campbell 'Too Much Credit' for Bond
I totally agree. He did get too much credit for both. Any movie that reboots that franchise is on to a winner irrespective of the director pretty much. Any new actor is going to be given a huge amount of publicity and kudos and be seen as the life saver of Bond! Pierce had it - Goldeneye was a fantastic film and he was Bond to a T.
Then sadly his films got less and less well written and then silly. It wasn't how he wanted them to be. He'd waited long and hard for that role and they should have pulled out all the stops to make his tenure the best ever. But the Brocoli's didn't have the courage then and when they did they wanted another Bond.
Craig's Casino Royale was good but his second outing has been seen in hindsight as rather a lukewarm sequel. Too much mindless violence and no humour. It will be interesting for some I should think, to see how they go forward now that they've introduced a "thuggish" Bond. Personally for me the whole thing is passé now.
Long live Bourne!

I doubt he cares. According to IMDb, the only reason he returned to direct CR was because he had nothing else on his schedule at the time.katied wrote:I think any sort of negative comments might put him on EON's "No directing" list.![]()

Campbell is very selective about his projects. Seems like he does about a movie a year or so,looking at the stuff he's done.

It is a sign when the director of previous movie publicly disavows the sequel. Maybe they will get it together for the next one

I always thought Campbell was an old hack who was grateful for the chance to direct Casino Royale. I'll have to look at his IMDB to see if I'm being a bit harsh.

Apart from GE and CR it seems a lot of his work would confirm his, erm, hackiness.

Legend of Zorro *is* a stinker!
Re: Martin Campbell disliked QOS
I liked his first Zorro flick, but I rented the second one and didn't even finish it. It seemed more like a soap opera about the state of Zorro's marriage than an adventure film with the swashbuckling derring-do we expect from a Zorro movie.katied wrote:Legend of Zorro *is* a stinker!

I am just going to echo what I said in BJs thread.
Campbell saying this is a sign of how the people industry feel about Quark, true enough. However it may not be former worker speaking out of school not caring if he works form them again, it could Mirror how Eon themselves feel about Quark in retrospect. Craig certainly isn't happy about it. Although I doubt he realizes he was part of the problem with it and not the innocent victim.
