What's Going on With "James Bond 23"?

Post by Blowfeld »

Screenwriter Peter Morgan (The Last King of Scotland, Frost/Nixon) sat down with MI6 to give an update on the 23rd James Bond film. While trying not to reveal to much, Morgan said that he has been writing the script from July until October of this year, adding: "It's a shocking story."

Unfortunately, the new installment has been put on hold until February, when MGM goes on sale. After that, the new owners will likely greenlight "James Bond 23" immediately and continue the pre-production work that has already been started.

Daniel Craig has stated several times that he will return for more films and expects that principal photography will begin at the end of 2010, possibly for a late 2011 release.

I just posted something about this on the BJMDDS thread. As I said there I don't like the sound of a "shocking plot".

In the old days it might have meant the inclusion of a Tazer gadget.

I've heard fanboy speculation that it might be either a) Dame Judi Dench's M getting killed off or b) the return of Blofeld and SPECTRE. A big HELL NO! and  to both of those ideas.

I don't think Mi6 got a sit down with Peter Morgan. Morgan gave an interview to an Austrian newspaper (KURIER),
If you're expecting, what after the dark antics of "Casino Royale" and "Quantum of Solace", for the Bond series to now return a lighter, campier, more Roger Moore-ish tone, you're going to be sadly disappointed or, much more likely, as pleased as a hooker at a winning poker machine. Bond 23 scribe Peter Morgan ("The King of Scotland") says the next film will be darker than Darth Vader's doona cover.
Speaking to long-running bond fansite MI6, Morgan said he and co-writers Neal Purvis and Robert Wade (who wrote the previous two films in the series) have come up with "a shocking story" for the new film.

He didn't elaborate, in fact, he didn't really say anything else about the story other than that - that it'll be "shocking" - but I think we can all agree that after the dissapointing "Quantum of Solace" it's reassuring to know the uber-talented Morgan is onboard, and, if his words are anything to go by, planning on offering up a story a little more stimulating than the lukewarm yarn told in "Solace".

Pre-production on Bond 23 begins in February, at which time the financially-fucked MGM should have a new buyer. It's believed the Lion's new owner will immediately greenlight Bond 23 to help recoup some of the coin they've just shelled out on buying the company. Expect the film sometime late 2011.

"A shocking plot"? That's a pretty generic statement. Hard to read anything much into it.

They could try making a James Bond film next time. That would be a truly shocking development.

The "twist" will be leaked early, despite best efforts and there will be lots of complaining on the fanboy boards about people getting spoiled, even though they clicked on a thread that was marked as such.

Dench M will die. She will be killed by Craig's Bond.
:type:
Bond captured & tortured is returned home as a weapon against his masters. See "The Man with a Golden Gun" for specifics.

Murdering M breaks the programing and amnesia suffered by Bond, Bond then goes after the ones who used him.
Bond finds out it is the secret organization Qantas Image err, sorry Quantum Image is behind it.
Wanted by everybody including his landlord Bond is out to avenge the only woman he trusted, whose trust in him got her killed. At the end of the journey Bond finds himself back in London on a mission to kill M, this time of his own volition. The new M is a Quantum mole instrumental in creating the situation that caused Bond to kill Dench's M

The long and the short of it all, Bond 23 will complete the Bond universe, bridging the two universes, including the old series started with Sean Connery's Bond.
Bond will become suave because that is how the bad guys reprogram him, based on impression they got of who he was from his files. While trying to repair the damage done HMSS will go with the suaveness and class as platforms to rebuild him from as it is too deeply ingrained to easily remove. However the trauma of killing M will leave Bond with a permanent blank spot going back to the first day he met her.
The very last scene of the movie will show Bond head to toe in bandages, as the bandages are slowly unraveled from his face we see Sean Connery's face (CGIed) and voice revealed Image. Ala Darth Vader Episode 3 :P Image

Bond 23 and Craig end by leaving the possibility it all rolls back to Dr No.
New M (Bernard Lee)
Moneypenney (Lois Maxwell)
Major Boothroyd/Q (Desmond Llewelyn)
Suave Bond

The Bond ner..I mean purists would LOVE the bald Blofeld to return.I can imagine the mocking the film would get from reviewers if they did, though..
