Sadly, he was too old by the time Bond came along. On the OHMSS DVD someone says that the perfect Bond would have the charm of Cary Grant and the ruthlessness of Jack Palance.

They did talk to him about Dr No apparently. He retired from acting in 1962 or something anyway.

I believe Cubby already knew Grant by that point and had given the thought of casting him as Bond but knew that Grant would only do one picture since he wasn't really interested in doing sequels.

That what i heard too, grant would only do one film and they wanted to do a series.

Didn't Fleming recommended him for an example of Bond or something?

Was he English or American?
I don't know about Bond with an American accent. Although I do like Grant, i haven't seen one of his movies in year.

He was born in the UK, but he has a distinctive Mid-Atlantic accent.

English - Bristolian to be specific. My granddad went to school with him, and there is a statue of him in Bristol.

That's a wonderful claim to fame!

Roger Thornhill would have been a great Bond.

North By Northwest was a "Bond film" before Bond films existed, so-to-speak. Grant would have made a great Bond.

I am not sure about B&W, Ted Turner would have colorized, Grant would have been welcome though.
