Cinematic 007 in Big Trouble?

We just read a series of very eye-opening posts at

http://rottentomatoes.com/vine/j/bawiseconsulting

Two issues are discussed in four items originally published by the “RICK SHAW NEWS SERVICE" based in Tokyo. The first of the “JAMES BOND 007 IN BIG TROUBLE HERE” items talk about the threats of Sony, UA, and Danjak against Brenda Wise Consulting for her quest to commercially market Bond caricatures by illustrator Ian Baker.

Then, the articles allegedly say the companies behind the Bond films are in big trouble, and claim even Michael G. Wilson may be on his way out. Further, the writer says financial woes are behind the delay of the next James Bond 007 film until Christmas of 2011.

“While Bond producers, Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli “insist they are taking a rest from Bond," the truth is more 'strategic and logistical.' Sony owes the Broccoli owned 'Danjaq, LLC' roughly $300,000,000 for their last two Daniel Craig films. “Evidently, Sony Pictures 'paid its bills' with Broccoli money," said one source at the Sony Studio in Culver City, California. “That is why Sony is offering Danjaq, LLC two outside pictures, one of which will be a remake of “CHITTY, CHITTY, BANG, BANG," the 1968 classic, which starred DICK VAN DYKE as Hirotomus Potts and was produced by Danjaq co-founder, James
Bond producer, ALBERT R. BROCCOLI.

“The two pictures will mean Sony may get away with only paying Danjaq about $170,000,000 on the $300,000,000 they owe them, especially if the two outside Bond films should tank. We believe the Sony team is counting on 'Chitty, Chitty, Bang, Bang' and their other film, a thriller — to go down the tubes."

Many more details are in the posts at Brenda’s “Rotten Tomatoes” site.

It is going to come as a shock to some but there are problems behind the scenes. One of the first things I heard a while back was Sony was not happy with the high cost of Quark.

Sony can be bas***ds when they want. The format war where they paid off Studios to support their format over the competition ought to serve as reminders to any thinking of doing business with Sony.. Despite all of the highs and lows of the format was they are in trouble financially and will fight to the death before letting go of any cash. The PS3 loses them $40 per unit sold. Still. Today.
That shocked me. I knew the originally they were losing hundreds of dollars on each PS3 at start up, that was to be expected, and I knew that they were losing greater than $50 per unit last year but rumor was production streaming had cut cost. Apparently it did but not enough. The biggest mistake I think they made with the PS3 is cutting out PS2 backward compatibility to save dosh, why bother since they still are losing their shirts as well as the PS2 faithful who are now upgrading to the Xbox 360 and buying spare PS2 for good measure..

The Brocs have met their match, it will be in the struggle of their lives to come out of it unmarred.

No, sounds like they're counting on it being a flop, hence my Producers reference.

The money involved is staggering.

Basically this

spent $300,000,000

on this

Haven't seen that kind of monetary discrepancy since this

Sony knew how to play Cubby's kids, make no mistake they have been played. Seems Sony will give them half the money Sony allegedly already owns them to make 2 loser movies and never have to pay them back.
Whatever happens Sony wins. Sony will get two movies out of the deal and if they don't make the money back big deal! since the movies essentially cost them nothing and they still have two movies for their video library that they didn't control before. Best part is Babs and Mikey go off and play by themselves in their little sandbox while Sony keeps the money to finance real projects with. Seems Cubby's Franchise beached itself.

I can believe Michael G. Wilson might be considering leaving. It has been made very clear by Babs where he stands.

Am I correct in thinking that the first one didn't exactly set the box office alight either? I was quites surprised when I first heard that, because it was such a beloved fixture of the holiday TV schedule when I was a kid.

No, I don't think it was a hit..though it seems to be a movie that people from the UK have all seen on TV. It's been out on video in the States for a long time,my niece and nephew watched it not too long ago.

Broccoli has ruined this franchise and is over her head with her arrogance to exploit Craig as Bond.

I can't say I blame Mikey G. if he decides to quit. He'll be able to sit back and laugh his a$$ off when the remake of CCBB and Bond 23 fail miserably

I think it cost $10m to make it. I recall reading something about it running over budget although it was supposed to have recouped it. All I could find is an entry for it in 1968 for $7.120m, probably US BO only. Like most movies from this era the records are confused. Sometimes combing re-releases into rolled-over totals.

Forbes: Sony on Bond

You did the last two Bond movies, but those rights now go back to MGM. Is it important to find something to fill that hole?

Pascal: It's always necessary. Bond came along for us and it was a great thing. But we're always looking for those characters you can build a lot of movies around.
Do franchise films give you the opportunity to pay stars less because Bond and Batman have shown you can change the lead actor and still be successful?

Pascal: It really depends on the character because sometimes the man behind the suit has brought that character to life in a way the audience has fallen in love with and they're wary of change. We were wary of casting Daniel Craig because people loved Pierce Brosnan so much. But [Craig] played the role beautifully. We're very happy with Tobey Maguire, and he had brought Peter Parker to life and I can't imagine anyone else doing that.
