Craig rejects Thor

I remember Christian Bale telling me a few years back that he’d love to play BOTH Batman and James Bond – and didn’t have a problem with juggling both roles so long as the people and the producers didn’t. Seems Daniel Craig does have a problem with wearing both a cape and a tie. The 007 star has rejected Marvel’s offer to frock up as muscly superhero Thor, says IESB.net.

At the junket for “Quantum of Solace” Craig confirmed rumours that was indeed offered the role of the comic-book hero but turned it down saying it’d be “too much of a power-trip” running around with long hair and a hammer.

As IESB notes, Craig’s not exactly Thor material anyway – he’s a wee bit too short.

So this confirms it - both Nolan and Bale wanted to do Bond, but EON went with Campbell and Craig instead. Sigh. Perhaps them wanting to do it is what disqualified them. EON seem to prefer hiring people who regard Bond films as being beneath them and only agree to do them after being promised that they can do as much damage to the franchise and its traditions as they want.

That would have been interesting. Nolan would not have thrown out the Bond Bible or Fleming's ideals. Look at how carefully he crafted Batman, he does not wast a thing, every chance he gets they add to the current image carefully grafting from best of the past.

What we get with Bond is botched reboot, weak plot lines, asthmatic villains and lame reenactments of iconic battles/moments. Batman is fresh although we know for certain who will win the battle and who the villains are. The next villains are highly anticipated, from a pool of well known candidates. Bond is not fresh (anymore) and is syphoning out the septic tank for ideas.

I believe the case about Bale not getting the role because of Batman, but I doubt EON didn't go with Nolan because of that too. Afterall, Campbell was announced as the director in January 05.

I still think Nolan could get a shot at Bond, and as Mazer says, he'd stick to the Bond bible. Campbell isn't interested, Forster wants to move on to other projects and Haggis feels he's not ready for something big like Bond. Nolan has had success with big budget films like Batman, but other than Bat fans, is Nolan's name in the conscious thoughts of average moviegoers for EON to decide he's too famous? I don't think he has quite reached that level of recognition yet, until he makes another hit film that isn't Batman or any brand selling name.

I think industry politics will play a bigger part than audience recognition. The reason Cubby picked John Glen rather than Steven Spielberg to direct FYEO was not because Spielberg was a household name by that point (though he was), but because Cubby feared he'd ask for a percentage of the profits. After TDK, it wouldn't surprise me if Nolan had enough clout to do that too.

True, but then again I can imagine that he'd put aside percentage profits so he could get the chance to make a film that he's claimed being a childhood dream. But who knows at this point. There's a lot of demand over Batman 3 and WB must be kissing Nolan's feet to come back. Plus if it's true that EON will take a year break and release Bond 23 in 2011, then it's likely he won't get that chance until Bond 24.

Well, if Craig does decide to call it a day after three films, Nolan would be the perfect choice to restart the series with a new Bond, though Bale may be too old by then. (Edit: or perhaps not - I just checked and he is 6 years younger than Craig).

I can't see Bale getting the role, no matter how comfortable he is with handling multiple franchises, that's not what EON will go for. Mind you, I would love it if Bale eventually gets the role after Craig finishes his tenure, as you said, he wouldn't be too old by then. But it's just not happening. :( EON will just cast another actor who hasn't established himself as a film star.

However I would look forward to a new unknown actor groomed by Nolan, ala Connery/Young. That would be interesting. But still I'd like to see Nolan work with Craig still around.

It'd be an easy sell if Bale took over. I think Eon may be more open now a days to a Nolan-Bale team coming in and doing their thing. I don't know if the Borcs' would be at ease or smart enough to get out of the way and sit on the sidelines warming the bench. That may be the biggest reason it will never happen

It would have been easy with many film stars of the past, but EON's formula of taking unknowns, going all the way back to Connery proves to be a winning strategy.

Easy Sell - far as selling it to the public and fans.

Say tomorrow Craig announced he is done, this is it, he is gone. Now folks are fretting about who will they get next, so many missteps out there to avoid.
Say they day after Craig's departure is official they announce Bale and Nolan are on board, a lot of us would breath easy.

If they wanted, they could. Still they'd rather launch a new film star than rely on an established film star to help them out. EON had so many opportunities to make fans automatically happy with established film stars, but never in the 46 years have they.

Kinda funny. He wasn't Bond material and he got the job. But now it matters that he isn't Thor material . What? :?
I think he thumbed his noes at it becasue it wasn't serious enough for a serious actor like himself, lord knows he sucked all the fun and excitement right out of Bond. But at least now they are serious art house films to be proud of.
