Who would you like to see as the first American James Bond - if you are not including Pierce Brosnan, who is very American!
Burt Reynolds was considered. But I think Cubby Broccoli rejected him because he was too short! A young Burt Reynolds would have worked as Bond. Or even an older one, with that drug addled Doctor as Q and Dom Deluise as M.
John Gavin and James Brolin nearly made Diamonds Are Forever and Octopussy and I feel they would have been good. John Gavin has the Bond look - just watch Psycho.
Can I inculde Mel Gibson? He is virtually American. He could have been an acceptable Bond in the 1980's.
Favorite Bond Movie: The Dark Knight Trilogy, Mission: Impossible, Kingsman: The Secret Service and The November Man or any upcoming actioners starring Pierce Brosnan (no, it's not James Bond which is good since it will help him expand his reputation as an actor especially in the action realm)

It is essential that the character remains British. I would be open to an American playing James however I can't name one American actor that can pull off a decent British accent. Well... Aside from Gwyneth Paltrow and Madonna.
On the other hand I can name numerous British actors who are able to preform believable American accents. Daniel Craig not being one of them.

I can name several. Johnny Depp for one. Robert Downey Jr in Chaplin. The lads from Spinal Tap. Not saying any of them could be Bond, but we've come a long way from the days of Dick Van Dyke.

I'd prefer homegrown Brits in the role of Bond, but I'm open for an American actor if he could pull it off. I wonder if an American is cast that a minority of fans will go nuts and make a YankIsNotBond.com.

I wonder if any American actor would actually accept the part. Both Adam West and Burt Reynolds allegedly turned it down, saying that Bond should be British.

NO.........NO..........NO...............i think Bond should be played by a British actor, or an actor who has spent most of his life being brought up with the English culture.
Put it this way, would Americans like an English Batman..........no, i didn't think so!!!!!

It wouldn't bother me if the Bond actor was American. The current Bond is British and I can't stand him. It all depends on the accent. Angelina Jolie made a great Lara Croft because she did a good job with the accent. Kevin Costner made an eccentric Robin Hood because he kept talking about somewhere called "Noddingham".
I don't like the idea of a american bond. It feels wrong
But if there was a actor to look and sound the part I guess I wouldn't mind.
But it is hard to maintain a fake accent during a action scene. Dalton sounded weird at times.
