Casino Royale not a blockbuster in the United States
Casino Royale not a blockbuster in the United States
Casino Royale has taken about $167 million in the US. Good figures and ones I'm sure they are happy to get but...that is about the same amount as that soapy Will Smith film The Pursuit Of Happiness, less than Die Another Day's adjusted for inflation figures and a long way behind A Night At the Museum's $241 million current take. The penguins got almost $200 million as well. What I find interesting is that the UK contributed $100 million to CR's box-office take. Astonishing. Is Craig's Bond less popular in the US than he is around the world?

Still a bigger movie than DieAnotherDay.
And there are other countries outside the US.
But if you wanna keep calling CasinoRoyale a flop you go right ahead pal.
I suppose Brosnan would've made a better film, and grossed more money...or anyone apart from Daniel Craig.
Of course being that the film is based on a worldwide figure when it's compared with success and profits the $590+ million USD is going to keep Eon and Sony smiling for a while yet.

I surprised at the low US take. I thought for sure it would clear $200,000,000.
There are other countries?!!!? When the hell did this happen?
The world movie market has changed from 2002 -2006's world market is bigger just by the new places open to western movies.

Casino Royale failing to reaching Blockbuster status has to have them scratching their head. Everything was there for the perfect storm: the publicity, the hype, the reviews, the field devoid of competition.
A cartoon penguin, the Pursuit of Happiness and a Museum field trip prove to be better draws for the American audience. Which is who Royale seemed to be tailored towards after copying Bourne and Batman.

I thought that now this site was under new management, it may have moved away from Crazytown, but with this thread and the new front page message, it seems I was wrong. For Cliff's sake, is it not possible to say you didn't like Craig and CR without trying to pretend that it is some kind of flop? Even adjusted for inflation, it still outgrossed half of Brosnan's films, both of Dalton's, Dr No , OHMSS and all but one of Moore's. And it's the biggest grossing non-Connery Bond worldwide, with the possible exception of Live And Let Die (I say "possible" because there is some dispute over the official figure for that film's worldwide adjusted gross).
I don't like Craig as Bond and I don't like the new direction the series has taken. Does that mean I'm obliged to go into denial about the film's success?

Wasn't Thunderball the biggest Bond film?
All of you probably know the answers already

Answering your second question first, note that I said the biggest Non-Connery Bond.Harvey Wallbanger wrote: What LALD controversy?

If you look at a graph of worldwide admissions, such as this one, LALD stands out as being anomalously high. John Cork in his book The Legacy give the film's worldwide gross as $126,400,000, a figure apparently backed up by Variety magazines of the day. However, some reports give this as the international (ie non-US and Canada) figure and then add the US gross of $35,400,000 for a worldwide total of $161,800,000. The adjusted gross of $607,300,000 appears to be based on this figure.

How is the film a flop when it made more then your beloved Pierce Brosnan's Die Another Day? Or any of his films for a matter? Oh wait, let me guess, you guys are the same people that called LTK a flop, even though it wasn't. In order for a film to flop, it would have to make less then it's original budget(which The World Is Not Enough did). Although keep in mind, the us box office doesn't matter, given the fact that the Bond franchise isn't a North American franchise and the United States Box Office only takes up about 29% of the franchise.

Calm down. The topic was about CR's box-office take in the US. My point was that the Museum film has taken $241 million and counting whereas CR has taken $167 million. The US hasn't been quite as receptive (pound for pound dollar for dollar as some other parts of the world). My evidence for that? CR took over $100 million dollars in Great Britain and $167 million in the United States. The US population is what, four or five times that of the UK?

GoldenEye's and The World is Not Enough's US intakes were below Casino Royale's, where they boycotted too?

The point is that you guys were saying that Casino Royale did disappointingly, and the main page of this site is making a big thing of it, but it did better than two of Brosnan's films in the US, and saying Craig is less popular in the US then Brosnan, but his first film did better than Brosnan's first

Sorry, I should have made it clearer that I was talking about US grosses in the bit quoted above. The point about Night At The Museum is a red herring. Do you seriously think that if EON had released a fifth Brosnan film instead of Casino Royale that it would have made a blind bit of difference to NATM's (or Happy Feet's) box office?ID wrote:Kristatos wrote: Even adjusted for inflation, it still outgrossed half of Brosnan's films, both of Dalton's, Dr No , OHMSS and all but one of Moore's.

Well genius the only film you can fairly compare it too on that list of yours is HappyFeet.ID wrote: Calm down. The topic was about CR's box-office take in the US. As the other two were released after CasinoRoyale.
And as HappyFeet is a kids film (and obviously appealed to alot of members here) the films box office figures are always going to be higher as parents have to take there anklebiters to see the film. So you should really compensate the figures for HappyFeet to allow for the extra admissions that it produces.
No doubt some smartarsed response or wildly imaginative excuse will be thought up by someone.

Look it these arguments can go back and forth. DAD was the biggest Bond movie -in recent history.
It spoke to the popularity of Brosnan's Bond. -The second best Bond to Connery for many. And beloved -Don't piss on the fans who loved him.
But it also cuts the other way. If Brosnan was popular with the BO as proof, then Craig can be called popular.
28% is a big drop -nearly 10%- from a previously reliable audience.
CR would have been $700 million, if the US audience would have shown up.
The world audience is lumped in to one figure and the world market in 2006 is bigger.
