Hostiles beats the projection for 3rd. The post dropped more than expected and greatest showman did better than expected, all the rest are about where they were projected except for Padmaavat (???) and last Jedi which drops out of the top ten

You might disagree with my thoughts on TLJ, at this point the movie is stalled and dropping fast.bjmdds wrote:The Last Jedi is a bad “part of the legacy it seems in terms of storyline from what I have seen. I will skip it until it's on regular tv now.

It's not going to reach $1.6 billion (the studio's projected total), that's for sure.Omega wrote:You might disagree with my thoughts on TLJ, at this point the movie is stalled and dropping fast.bjmdds wrote:The Last Jedi is a bad “part of the legacy it seems in terms of storyline from what I have seen. No. Not with China pulling the movie.
I do think the way the foreign BO looks, the Asian market didn’t like either the story or western humor/taste it crafted for.
Japan has always been star wars crazy they opened bigger than TFA and then attendance drop off.
Greatest showman has more staying power than I thought. They still need $300 million to breakeven and it close.
Hostiles did better too I think it was way down on their earlier list, also has Rosamund Pike. To me it looks like a made for tv army in the West movie.

Re: Box office thread
I think the actuals were close to the estimated so I’m not goin to try to add them.
Only the first two Spider-Man movies are ahead of Jumanji. The new Spider-Man homecoming did $880 million Worldwide, $334 million domestic , cost $175 so $525 breakeven.
Garfield’s Spider-Man movies were $758 world wide $690 breakeven, movie 2 $708 worldwide $255 million cost so $765 breakeven, but desdline has a great breakdown of everything , Sony made $70 million only after video and tv sales. http://deadline.com/2015/03/amazing-spi ... 201389608/
They also heat the breakdown of a few other movies I’m gong to have to post sometime.
My point was going to be the much praised nu-Spider-Man was not that much better than the Garfield Spider-Man, closer than $100 million, but the nu-Spider-Man is a better performer just because they cut the production costs

Winchester at #3, despite savage reviews. I wonder what its second weekend drop will be.

I’ve seen the real Winchester house, it’s completely crazy.
Thing about the late 19th century & early 20th is spiritualism was a big deal, a lot of people got caught up in it, even Arthur Conan Doyle the father of modern detective genre and inspiration for modernizing the police he was a believer, Houdini who you’d think would buy into that kind of stuff fought to prove it bogus.
But for the Winchester lady it wouldn’t be at all unusual even then to totally be convinced the sins of the family would be visited on her. And this in a deeply Christian anti pagan, wash the savage Indians mouths out with soap for praying in their own language, America. Some how spiritualism thrived around the world in that era.

Don't know if it's any good, I haven't seen it, but the reviews say no. That's why I was surprised to see it debut so high. I know some films are critic-proof, but there's no obvious reason why this should be one of them.

I think horror movies have a built in market, the ads for Winchester it looked like a average horror film, but when I realized I’ve seen the crazy house I was kind of curious

Re: Box office thread
I might have been interested, if it wasn't for the lousy reviews. It was originally billed as a Hammer film, but Hammer had their name removed from the marketing, which isn't exactly encouraging. I was somewhat familiar with the story due to the Swamp Thing issue about it that Alan Moore wrote during his run on the series back in the '80s.

Re: Box office thread
Jumanji and greatest showman just will not quit. It will be interesting if the forecast match the estimates last few weeks they haven’t.
