That movie may be the X-men director last for a while.
Queen music is legendary, but was this movie about that or Freddy Mercury?

If it’s about the glam rock era it could be good.

It was made with the cooperation of the surviving band members, so it's very much the authorised version. The upside of that, though, is they get the rights to use the original recordings of the music, and don't have to bus in some tribute band from Peoria.

Weekend estimates show Bo Rhap winning the weekend quite comfortably with $50 million. Disney's Nutcracker and the Four Realms is a not at all close second with $20 million.

a big surprise to me I didn’t think it would open bigger than early estimates.
I keep seeing mixed reviews.

The audience was 78% over 25. I guess there are a lot of (mostly older) Queen fans out there.

That’s a shocking metric. So no younger generations that normally push the bo with their attendance. But the way the studio pushed the music in the trailers it was really meant to trigger nostalgia for the music. Better than I’ve ever heard their music anyway.

It'll be interesting to see what sort of legs it has. A mostly older audience might actually be a good thing, as they tend to have more disposable income.

What was the audience rating? I think this might tell if it more than nostalgia.

Of course I’ve heard cinema ratings done opening weekend skew positive because people don’t like to feel bad about the movie they spend money on and if you’re there early they tend to be fans, so getting B are difficult

It got an A on Cinemascore. As you say, those ratings are taken on a film's opening night, so tend to represent the most enthusiastic viewers. It's rare for any film to get below a B+. An F rating is the sign of a major turkey!

Edit: this article is over a year old, but it lists the 19 (mostly low-budget horror) movies that had achieved this dubious honour at the time of writing: http://www.vulture.com/2017/09/here-are ... score.html

Someone who used to do the surveys for the studio said most people almost never go below a B so if you ever see a s ore below that the audience really hated it

It was a slow burner. I don't think it ever got to #1 in the weekly chart, but it had legs, and now it's top of the year-to-date chart.

Good result for The Grinch. The reviews I've read say it's much better than that Jim Carrey atrocity (which led to the Seuss estate banning any further live action adaptations of his works).

Meanwhile, Bohemian Rhapsody crosses $100 million domestically, and has already comfortably gone into profit worldwide.
