The Heckler: why it’s time to kill off James Bond

The Bond film franchise has run out of ideas and is pulling its punches for fear of offending foreign governments. Why 007's finest days are behind him

Rupert Myers 11 April 2015

For fans of the franchise who remain unconvinced by Daniel Craig’s time on her majesty’s secret service, the stories leaking from the production of the latest film Spectre are further evidence that the time has come to hand 007 a glass of scotch and a revolver. Craig’s Bond always had less of an air of an expense-account gentleman spy and more the demeanour of a spornosexual plumber. This is a Bond who’d sooner take photographs of his abs in the bathroom mirror than go bird-watching.

Stumbling after the surefooted remake of Casino Royale, there is no disguising the tedious drivel that was Quantum of Solace, nor that Skyfall borrowed heavily from the Home Alone franchise. Whether it was the underground train timed to crash when Bond appeared, or the wholescale technological ineptitude of MI6, the decision to explore Bond’s roots was the series equivalent of The Phantom Menace. When the indulgence of the writers and a misplaced urge to service the fans overtook the need for a polished work of cinema.

The malaise of the series has now become clear, with the recent Sony hacks revealing that the next instalment is riddled with script issues. The reintroduction of Blofeld is expected, but the leaks throw up concerns from producers that the final act is a mess, and Blofeld’s motive entirely unclear. We can expect the clunky introduction of another ‘serious’ love interest after Bond’s multi-part moping over Vesper Lynd. Gone is the frivolity and the deftness of touch from the original series. The gadgets have been replaced by product placement, with Bond more likely to swig a Heineken than carry an exploding pen. Even the return of an old nemesis raises concerns that Bond’s finest days are behind him, and that we are trapped on repeat, the copies neither as funny or action-packed as the excellent Kingsman, nor as gritty and compelling as the Bourne movies.

Rather than resisting the urge to reveal Bond’s past, the latest films have wallowed self-indulgently, replacing pyrotechnics and foreign intrigue with Bond’s miserable schleps while driving a Ford. Was the Ford also a submarine? Did the Ford have anti-aircraft missiles? You would be forgiven for suspecting that the glove box contained no more than a box of tissues and a six-pack of lager.

Bond has always had product placement, and the movies have often hinted at a deeper emotional vulnerability, but this juggernaut has lost direction. The news that Mexico is giving the production of Spectre $14 million to portray the country in a positive light should horrify fans, with Craig’s Bond now fronting a franchise that has descended into the territory of Wish You Were Here. To save a fraction of the film’s budget, there is every chance that it is being softened. Bond is now pulling its punches at the behest of commercial sponsors. The writing team cannot touch real-world issues in espionage for fear of losing tax breaks, offending worldwide audiences, or failing to appeal to a key demographic. Despite the current tensions between Russia and the West, we can expect to see Bond praising the fine people of Mexico, or taking photographs of it with his Sony mobile phone. Will Bond ever return to Russia? If Putin bungs through a tax incentive, perhaps Bond will turn for the FSB. For taking money from foreign governments and swapping his ammunition for blanks, and because the series has run out of ideas, I don’t expect James Bond to improve, I expect him to die.

What should also be said is bond allowed China to censor sf. As bad as that was it was clear it was for the promise of the Chinese bo, the only reason sf broke $1 billon. So any of the high minded things directors and actors like to talk about was sold out to the worst offender of human rights.

Not blaming Craig for that it wasn't up to him. But if people are willing to point out the hypocrisy of taking a rather poor countries money to ignore some of the serious problems there then they shouldn't forget about China successfully censoring a very willing eon. It will probably happen for this movie too.

Btw what's "spornosexual" ???

Spornosexual is a term coined by the writer Mark Simpson (he wrote a book called Saint Morrissey several years ago which was a decent read) in response to our increasingly narcissistic, shallow, fashion victim world.

http://www.esquire.co.uk/culture/featur ... rnosexual/

The spornosexual is a more extreme breed of man than his metro forebear. He is just as plucked, tanned and moisturised, but leaner, buffer, more jacked and obsessed not just with “looking good” in the abstract, but with the actual physical proportions of his frame: the striation of his abs, the vascularity of his biceps, the definition of his calves.

He defines himself less by the clothes he wears than by his HD-ready body, which is perpetually ready to be ogled on the beach, admired on the high street as it bursts out of a skin-tight plunging V-neck T-shirt, or rubbed-up-against under the flickering strobe of an Essex nightclub. He was defined as the “modern British douchebag” by writer Clive Martin in Vice. A walking, preening monument to the British masculinity crisis, a sports science Übermensch with an indecent exposure charge to his name.”

Thank lord! Some with an actual brain.I mean, even in FRWL,a low-key classic spy movie there is the moment that would never happen to a real world spy.Kromsteen proporses his plan to Blofeld and says"...because the person that MI6 will almost surely assign this task would be their agent-James Bond." Event hough he is a secret agent-he is just that well known. Also,in Dr.No-the villiant knew what kind of drink Bond takes-Martini-shaken not stirred. That was always one of the appeal of Bond.Even though he is a secret agent everybody seem to know what his tastes are. It's like in one way-he was an internation rock-star! THAT'S AWESOME.Add to that his charm, his sophistication his coolnes and there you have it-things that make James Bond who he is.Craig has none of these things. So,no,he's not Bond by any stretch of imagination-at least not for me.And no matter how silly and ridiculous DAD was-Brosnan just examplified what Bond was.I'll take DAD over any of these last three depressions any day.

"I am going to ruin all my karmas by defending Die Another Day because of one scene that is the purest essence of Bond in the whole series. Bond escapes the medical boat and arrives at the posh yacht club, he is dirty, dripping wet, bearded like an extra from a redneck reality show, and everyone else is staring at him like he is a bum, but he walks like he's James f**king Bond. Watch just that scene and you will see exactly who Bond is; without the gun, gadgets, or girls, he's still a guy that would walk like his dick is solid gold. It makes the movie. It makes the series actually. If you had only one scene to show someone to make them understand who Bond is, that is it. Even as the plot gets more and more ridiculous that one scene was needed in the series, showing the audience that no matter what, Bond walks into a room like he owns it, because he's James Bond. " I posted this somewhere already but I'll do it again-because it's bloody right.

She did that because she dearly wanted Craig as Bond and he can't anything Bondesque if his life depended on him. So because of that Bond isn't interesting or entertaining or "too cool to be true" anymore. Now it's like Bourne or anything like that. What always distinguished James Bond is his charm, sophistication, his style, his grace, his car,his drink, his mannerisms. He had a kind of charisma that captured you from the very first moment. I think Jonathan Pryce is the one who once famously remarked how "every boy wants to be a Bond villain...once he realises he's not going to be Bond himself." After Goldfinger there was even 007 vodka. Bond doesn't need to be realistic. He is a fantasy. Or was a fantasy. Whatever. His name sells stuff. You know James Bond is a fantasy if JF Kennedy says how one of his favourite novels is about Bond. And we all know he was "the coolest man of the sixties"...if the coolest man of the sixties(early sixties) wants to be James Bond well then... I don't think there's any explanation needed.

I totally agreed with the writer of the article!

I said this many times and I will say again. Bond is someone we all want/wish/dream and fantasized to be. Everyone wants to be that good looking gentlemen who travel first class everywhere, drives Aston Martin and have all those beautiful women. James Bond is not only a fantasy movie character but has became a brand that showcase the very best that real life have to offer. Anything associated with James Bond is always the highest quality and taste!

That is... until they casted Craig... I don't hate him as an actor, he might be a sweet guy in person but I do hate him as Bond.

So born this website and forum.

But along the way, the story telling is exactly like what the writer of the article on the first post had stated. Yes, I did watch Craig Bond movies (on tv). I just don't enjoy them as Bond movies, even Skyfall which I have to admit is quite good. Spectre is a joke and no, I didn't pay to watch it. :007:

Nowadays, when I want to watch a fun Bond movie. I just have to take any of the pre-Craig Bond DVD and play. Still felt such a waste that there they have the best of both Connery and Moore in one package and they threw it away, Pierce Brosnan!

Having read a few articles on him now of people who met him in person, I think you are right! I hope he slash his wrist when they ask him back as Bond again. I hope he don't return, ever!

I don't care if Craig is a nice person or not but he should at least show some common decentcy and politeness in public. He doesn't have to be Roger Moore who is the nicest famous person I ever saw but yelling at fans and saying he would rather slash his wrists than return for another movie..nice move,Craig, bitting the hand that feeds you. EON paychecks literally feed him since it seems he doesn't do anything else besides being in EON movie every three or four years.

Oh wait, you saw Roger Moore in person before? Wow, I wish I do too!

Graig just have dumb luck! For someone looking like a lizard's arse, he should be so lucky if he even get to become an extra in a tv show that nobody watches. And being a jerkoff to his fans, good for him than! I hope there will be more anti-Craig members coming here and lesser people watching his movie that EON will have to recast him and give us a more likable actor. Some people just don't deserve the chance they are given.

Sadly,no,I never saw Roger Moore in real life. But when someone says a "nice","approchable","friendly" famous person I just think of Moore.
Before,I was angry at EON because they casted Craig, who is totally wrong for Bond and because they changed everything about the series but now I wanna put Barbara in a mental hospital. even after Craig declared he would rayher shash his wrist than return for anothrt movie she is still saying how she will literally bring him to do another one.
Is she such a crazy fan of his?! It's like someone has washed her brain.

I read a lot of people who met with Roger and everyone said he is the nicest celebrity they ever met. That is pretty awesome!

As for Craig, I agreed that Barbara is mental! Such harsh words from Craig and they still want to put him in another Bond movie? What did Craig do to make Barb love him so much I wonder? All I am hoping is that Craig have the decency to honor his words and get away from being Bond again! He don't have to hate being Bond because we all hated him as himself already.

As I mentioned somewhere, no one I know in person or online likes Craig as Bond, at all! None!

AND TURNING BLOFELD INTO CRAIG-BOND'S FOSTER BROTHER?!?!?!??!

None!
People I know in person aren't thrilled with him either. whats funny, there was a recent poll on Croatian forum about who should be the next James Bond and every actor who was mentioned somehow, more or less fitted the "tall, dark, handsome" type. That still shows how people didn't forget what real Bond is like.
And by a large mile Cavill came on top. While not as big a supporter as some here I do like him and would give him a chance. The problem I see is-the VAST MAJORITY(99% really) of today's actors have 0% of charisma. The "old gang" Connery,Moore,Newman,Grant etc. could eat all those clarisma-less actors that are topping "best looking men" lists for breakfast.
