Bond 23 Daniel Craig's Last?

Post by John Drake »

What are the odds on Bond 23 being Daniel Craig's last film in the role? I think there must be a good chance because of (1) studio wrangles and problems (2) the modern Eon take forever to do anything (3) QoS was so dire the actor must be wondering how many more films like that he really wants on his CV. You could add (4) the fact that he might actually want to lay down some decent non-Bond work while he's still just about young enough and people still know who he is.

If it is another QOS then Craig may walk away before Bond 24, especially as Eon will probably have another 3-4 year break.

We can but hope. Though I don't trust EON to pick anyone better to replace him.

I think a combo of financial problems and Bond 23 being another QOS may make him think twice. As for making a decent non-Bond film..easier said than done

If Barbara had been in charge in 1962 she'd probably have overlooked Connery for some diminutive Phillip Seymour Hoffman lookalike she was socially connected to in real life.

There is a faint whiff of the 1989-1995 hiatus about the current situation (which is fine by me) but I fear we'll have to put up with two more DC outings somewhere along the line.

Well I hope not but with Babs in charge I wouldn't hold your breath for a change. She'll probably kidnap him if he ever tries to leave.

I'm not sure DC loves being Bond either. He's more Christopher Eccleston than David Tennant.

Heh.I like both Eccleston's and Tennant's portrayals of the Doctor. *shrug*

(If they come up with something sub par for Bond 23 that might make him think about ditching Bond. )

Weren't Daniel and Chris mates?

I never particularly cared for Christopher Eccleston's Doctor. He played it they way he plays everything. 'Oi! I'm intense'
His last few shows were his best but I don't think he got what Doctor Who is about. In that way he can be compared to Daniel in taking a role for the notoriety not necessarily in appreciation of the institution the role represents.

Eccleston and Porn 'Stache were both on a TV show called Our Friends In The North. Not sure about an actual friendship though.

Eccleston and Craig are mates. They come from a specific generation of British actors that also includes people like Mark Strong. The point about Tennant and Eccleston is a valid one I think because Tennant absolutely loved being Dr Who whereas Eccleston seemed to be doing it as a vague attempt to boost his career and bailed out after just one series. If they'd known he was going to jump ship so soon they probably would have thought twice about hiring him.

If RTD had known Chris would jump ship as he did he might have gone with Paul McGann to finish out his time as Doctor then regenerated into David, or gone with David to begin with. David was RTD's ideal Doctor long before David ever knew he was considered for the role.

From what I understand, the plan was always to just have Eccles for one season. David Tennant wasn't really well-known at the time, and bringing back Dr Who was a huge risk for the BBC, so RTD needed a "name" actor in order to sell it. Eccleston took the job (after Bill Nighy had already turned it down - a shame, I could totally see him as The Doctor) because he wanted to work with Uncle Rusty again, but as you say, his heart was never really in it.
