I don't know nearly $25 million unless it sells big time on DVD & vod I'm not sure.
I think this may be up to Europe to decide.

Bad luck its a bad year for movies.

The BJMDDS General Discussion Thread......

Post by Blowfeld »

Steve Moffat mentioned our favourite thespian.
(Slightly off-topic but talking about Sherlock, Moffat said he didn’t have too many jitters about reintroducing a beloved character in such a modern way, but there was a moment when his new version of Doctor Who was about to come out in the same few months as Sherlock and he thought, “If I screw both these up, all I have to do is shoot Daniel Craig in the face and I’ve screwed British culture.”)
I know what he meant, he would use Rogers name if it were 1983. However I would like to know one thing Broccoli family or Daniel have done to contribute to British culture.

It does seem based on the fallacious idea that Craig is irreplaceable, though.

Make Bond films that were critically and financially successful? I know many aren't fond for those Craig Bond films, but it would be silly to dismiss their impact as much as it would have been silly in the 1970s for Connery fans to dismiss Roger Moore's run.

I'm not dismissing them. I'm thinking of impact on the culture. I don't think the Broccoli family or Daniel, Roger, Pierce, Timothy, or George have impacted the culture. I might argue about Sean, however I'm taking what Moffat said slightly too far. I take his meaning, he has two arguably cultural icons if he ruined them all that's left from a visual medium point of view is Harry Potter and 007 James Bond.

It is a pet peeve that American and Canadian producers take credit for a quasi British series. With the proceeds split between Japan and Hollywood.

To me the original Sherlock, Bond and Doctor Who truly contributed to the culture. Two of the three were literary. I don't think in 20 years the televised additions will leave a real mark.

Of course there has to be some room for the original Bondmania I suppose. If you can't tell I am a stick in the mud on somethings. I love the written word and don't think to a certain degree the recent commercialisation of these characters is worth more than what we can take them for a evening of entertainment.

If he had said Pierce instead I would still be upset. If he had said Sean I would bite my tongue writing a strongly worded unsigned letter for fear of my own safety. ;)

He's likely talking about today's culture, as opposed to the grand scheme of things. All three incarnations are very popular at this time, something I'm sure most of Britain is proud of.

Outside of the UK, Dr. Who has grown very popular here in the states to the point that I gave it a shot. I don't get the appeal, but then again I tried starting with the revival with Christopher Eccleston. One day I might give the first series a shot.

ugh I tried watching the first series with Christopher again recently only to give up. Not as good as I remember and to begin with I didn't like his Doctor until the last few shows. Looking back it is a minor miracle the series was picked up.

To me the original incarnation of these cultural icons is more important than the later additions. If only for the originality.

Let me see if I can explain it better. I suppose just because it might be popular does not make it culturally significant. However this is taking a comment made in passing far too seriously.

Personally I don't consider the modern actors of those icons; Pierce, Daniel, Christopher, David, Matt and Peter as truly adding to the culture.

There is one original Star Trek. TNG, Ds9, Voyager, Enterprise have their place however to me the one to start it all is the most significant.

By the way good to see you!

Fair enough. I think only time will tell on how well modern incarnations will be relevant in the future. I'd argue that TNG qualifies as being culturally relevant. It may not be the originator that TOS was, but it still holds a pretty big audience. The fact that it gets most views on Netflix of all the Trek shows should mean something.

From time to time I still put on TNG episodes to cheer me up. Just well done,

Tempted to buy the series in HD when it come out this December.

Odd question why do you suppose the last shows of the recent Trek are so unbalanced? TNG and Enterprise last episode were rubbish. I don't recall DS9 and Voyager except for the impression DS9 ending was more interesting.

VOY and ENT suffered a lot because of constraints by the network they were under. UPN wanted them to basically be like TNG, and as a result a lot of them felt like rehashes of what came before that it added to the staleness of TV Trek. ENT did improve a lot once UPN started to let the writers do their thing, but it was too little too late as they already lost so much of the audience since the pilot. It's too bad. Had ENT started off with what they had on that fourth season, it might have faired a lot better.

DS9 is a very good show, but it was always one that was hard to sell because of how different it was from the other shows. I think it has gotten much better recognition over the years. It won't be a cultural milestone that TOS and TNG was, it at least has gained a lot of respect among sci-fi communities like BATTLESTAR GALACTICA, BABYLON 5, STARGATE, and FIREFLY have.

Fury is doing well for a WWII movie. But I still don't understand spending as much as they do make them.

Oct 10–12 Gross: $9,240 51 theatres $24,947,525
Oct 17–19 Gross: $31,669 +243% 85 theatres +34 $24,984,868
November Man actually INCREASED it's theatre count from 51 to 85 this past weekend and is just shy of the $25 million mark I guess they want to pass before the UK gets it. It grossed more weekend 8 than it did weekends 6 or 7 for some reason.

Good Lord.
He looks like UTTER CR*P in every way.
I can't look at this Putin lookalike and think he is James Bond. SMFH. I will take Idris Elba over him ANY given day, even if I don't think Elba is the perfect choice. If they wanted a black man to play Bond, it should have been Denzel Washington a long time ago.

Now instead, straight from the book of horrors, yesterday I was reading speculation that RIHANNA COULD BE THE NEXT BOND GIRL
RIHANNA?!??!?!? THE EPITOME OF VULGARITY?!?!?
ARE YOU KIDDING ME NOW!

I am FAR better suited to be a Bond girl than her even if I don't have a model's physique (just for height, not for being slim and built). SMH. I am DONE with these clowns!
Wait one minute Ale :!: YOU are done with Bond too? :!: Have you finally thrown in the towel on Broccoli's ruination of her daddy's masterpiece? Many here have given up on this corrupt tangential Bond interpretation but I always thought you had hope :!: So, the green vegetable has accomplished her goal. TO HELL WITH BOND should be the title of Bond 24 and I am sure FBF will agree most definitely. Rihanna? YIKES, BUT, she deserves Cr-egg and he deserves her, if true, and Cr-egg's Bond can play with MP and Rihanna all he likes in this next farce of a Bond film.........."She didn't even need to think about it, she knows she wants to do it. She's really excited." The pop star will certainly have got Daniel Craig's seal of approval after he previously said Rihanna would be his dream Bond girl. The 46-year-old actor - who has played James Bond since 2006's 'Casino Royale' - admitted he chose the beauty over Beyonce, because Rihanna is "dirtier". His comment prompted the 26-year-old to say: "This makes me happy".
Nah. I'm not done with the franchise, Daniel Craig is done at this point, like everyone else was before him. So I'll be here for the next one. I am  and  at what Craig said RE: Rihanna. I guess when one is left at home while wife is busy seeking better companions, vulgarity is what always wins. And Rihanna certainly is the epitome of it.
In other news, I have software to check who looks at my blog and I just saw someone from Nigeria using a provider called SPECTRANET. I went in Pam Bouvier mode. LOL
"Are we on coms?"
