Re: Sam Mendes to direct Bond 23
Once I watched marathon of Bond movies from Dalton to Craig pre Quantum and when we hit Casino Royale it all bogged down. There are some good points but itis long and boring. I was told I need to watch it with the Riff tracks commentary when I said we were making up our own one liners throughout it.John Drake wrote:They dug themselves into a hole by talking up a trilogy which they obviously had no plans or storylines for beyond cribbing elements of Fleming's first novel. QoS exposed the hubris, incompetence and Basil Fawltyesque social crawling inclinations of those in command, desperate for a BAFTA and some sort of acclaim when their job is to entertain people. If I go to watch a James Bond picture I want a colourful escapist adventure as a refuge from harsh reality not a pretentious morose mess from people who think they are making Wild Strawberries.
Looking back the screwed themselves over by making Casino Royale a " reboot " they drew a small circle stood inside it then said we are staying here you guy can have the rest of the world when the Bond motto is the World IS NOT Enough!

Putting the casting objection to one side, I did notice viewing part of the film on television before Xmas that the whole thing grinds to a halt when Le Chiffre dies. The Venice climax seems very tacked-on.Once I watched marathon of Bond movies from Dalton to Craig pre Quantum and when we hit Casino Royale it all bogged down. Given the choice between cutting the Bond recovering in Lake Como scenes, or Venice,I would have cut Venice. But it would have been a different movie. Or at least cut the Venice scenes down to a minimum.

Looking back at it even before the weepy accountant dies there are giant lulls in the movie. The poker table was boring to me and I don't know why they took so many breaks. Weak bladders? He had time to fall down the stairs killing a guy with plenty of time to change his shirt, he had time to die in his car while the lame geek squad tried to look concerned and involved.James wrote:Putting the casting objection to one side, I did notice viewing part of the film on television before Xmas that the whole thing grinds to a halt when Le Chiffre dies. One part that really seems bad is where he makes up the drink and then everyone orders one

Let's have Broccoli as the villain herself in CR-egg's final outing, what say yee? That way we can end 2 careers in Bond in one fell swoop.

Sad news, especially since they've got kids. Divorce is always hardest on the children.bjmdds wrote:Mendes getting divorced now from Winslet.

Re: Sam Mendes to direct Bond 23
I'd be amazed if Mendes did direct the next Bond. I'm not a huge fan of his films but it would seem beneath him to be a bag carrier for Dame Barbara.

Lewis Gilbert is 90 years old now. There was a man who knew how to give an audience value for money.
