Well, we all want it to succeed, but I don't think UNCLE should be the benchmark. If UNCLE had been an unexpected hit the way MI:RN and Kingsman were, that would have had real symbolic value, as it would have proved beyond all doubt that there is a real hunger for old-school Bond. As Ian said: "Once is happenstance, twice is coincidence, the third time is enemy action". No Escape beating UNCLE doesn't have that extra layer of meaning.

FBF wants validation somewhere for Brosnan by the masses after his early dismissal by Broccoli.

All I care about is the movie getting multiple excellent reviews and first place for the opening weekend in the US though I'm rooting more for the former.

You said it FBF. Look at poor Ale. She must be devastated that her hero Cavill's UNCLE film bombed badly. Hammer can get out of show business already. He has a horrible presence on film. He made the Lone Ranger look like the Lone "Stranger". Fantastic Bore, with it's PC poorly casted Storm character, was also a known flop before it was even released. Ant-Man underperformed for Marvel with Paul C-Rudd. Batman V. Superman looks like another waste of time. Eisenberg's film just bombed this weekend with Stewart. Those are 2 more horrid actors with NO appeal and Eisenberg as Lex Luthor??????? Ridiculous :!:       There is plenty of garbage out there FBF so let's hope No Escape surprises you and you finally get the satisfaction you deserve for your protege Brosnan.

I, for one, hope that BvS will succeed so it will keep Henry away from Bond. I can see it surpasses TDK's numbers but not TDKR's.

For once, Pierce needs a really great movie (particularly in the action realm) that appeals beyond his fanbase though he's a supporting player in No Escape. No, I'm not expecting it to make Bond-like numbers at the box office nor to beat UNCLE's numbers. A #1 status in the US box office during the opening weekend would be nice. If No Escape fails, then Pierce will sadly be placed in, like you said, Seagal's Hall of Shame.

The reviews are already good-the ones I read at least. I wouldn't count on first place for the opening weekend but is that really that important?
And FBF,even if it doesn't go so well it won't put Brosnan in any hall of shame as you say. The movie was primarily marketed as Owen Wilson transition from comedies to this genre. Brosnan has a supporting role in this one.

Well, I'm not too happy about it myself. Partly because I liked the film and partly, as I said, because a witty, stylish spy film with no soap operatics being a hit would have acted as a rebuke to what Bond has become.

I am suprised the movie didn't do better at the box office. All trailers have 3 or 4 million views on yt. And I agree, that if UNCLE became a hit like Kingsman it would show old Bond isn't forgotten and is still very much loved.
Actually, when I looked at what time is UNCLE playing at the theathers the synopsis for the movie went:"What do you get when a Russian spy meets American one? You get a movie in a James Bond style..." that is saying something.

And UNCLE has a good rating on IMDB.Seems to me people like the film.

Pierce hasn't had any of his films that land on first place for the opening weekend since DAD. As much as I want No Escape to take the top spot, I have feeling that Straight Outta Compton will take the glory for its three times the charm this weekend.

Did any article touch on WHY it bombed after such a great P&A campaign?.............Before he became Bond, Daniel Craig was living on the streets. In an interview he said, “I did some pretty awful things in order to survive.” He also said that while he was trying to make it as an actor, sleeping on park benches was a familiar thing.

According to Wikipedia, No Escape is getting positive reviews. Although he is a supporting player, at least Pierce has a really good actioner outside of GE for once.

Rotten Tomatoes says no reviews yet.
(Edit: sorry, just checked again and it's at 70% from 14 reviews. That's a big change since this morning).

RT review excerpts from several critics: A harrowing heart-pounder that delivers even more excitement per-minute than is suggested by its very compelling trailer! Excellent (4 stars)..................This is incredibly suspenseful, exciting and scary. The action is intense, but it’s not a romp. It’s survival action, which means the point is desperation, not wanton destruction. I distinguish them because I like both styles equally. My rule is always “because it’s awesome” is the only reason you ever need for something to happen in a movie. However, “because we’re desperate” works too, and there are some outrageous scenes in No Escape that work because they’re desperate. And because it’s awesome.....Editorialising aside, the business of No Escape – filmed as The Coup and not to be confused with the 1994 Ray Liotta science fiction film – is a Taken-style no-holds-barred family survival action film, with an inevitable side order of xenophobia undimmed by the indictment of faceless corporate chicanery..............To my surprise, NO ESCAPE was actually a rock-solid little thriller that managed to be reasonably gripping from start-to-finish. While the premise certainly plays on certain western ethnocentric fears, the execution of the material by the Dowdle Brothers is top-notch. Pierce Brosnan also gets a really juicy part as a shady expatriate boasting a few nifty scars who, naturally, proves to be a handy guy to have around when you’re running for your life. It’s Brosnan’s character that allows the Dowdle brothers to sprinkle in some political commentary, with his character having a moment where he admits to being part of a larger problem where western governments economically enslave nations such as the one here, which is interesting as it makes Wilson’s hero as much of an opportunist as everyone else – even if his motivations aren’t inherently sinister. Brosnan is excellent and in a way, NO ESCAPE feels almost like an unofficial sequel to THE MATADOR, with his character here having a lot in common with that movie’s hit-man anti-hero. Also - you get to see Brosnan sing Huey Lewis’ ‘Heart & Soul’ during a karaoke jam. That alone makes it a must-see, right? :martini:
