I accept there is always a small chance that the public will desire this type of Bond film for some time to come, although as others have also pointed out this is unlikely.
The Sweeney wrote:I doubt we will ever see the tongue-in-cheek 70's Moore films again. They belonged to a different time, a different era. One that's nice to look back on, but one that wouldn't work in today's society. Thet are probably thought of as cheesy these days by general film goers. Who knows, maybe in a few more years, that's how the Brosnan films will be thought of too.
The double entendres, dry humour, deadpan facial expressions may for now be a thing of the past, but in time I hope they return along with the gadgets (Invisible car included).
The Sweeney wrote:This current trend of more realistic, gritty, down-to-earth realism with action films is, by the looks of things, here to stay. I honestly don't think this is a passing fad, but more a complete overhaul of how Hollywood now is.
As a huge 24 fan, I enjoy gritty, tense and emotionally charged tough guy dramas. My gripe with Bond is that it did not need to follow suit. Admittedly CR was a commercial success, but at what cost? Are we now to endure this current style for years to come? Will Craig still pull in the ladies by posing in tight trunks in 10 years time?

I'm not convinced that Craig can deliver the true cinematic Bond performance. Maybe for Bond 22, Craig will dye his hair brown, cut out the carbs, get facial surgery, grow a couple of inches, take elocution lessons and learn comic timing from one-2-one sessions with Sir Rog.

I can only dream.....

The Sweeney wrote:I still find it quite ironic that in the mid 70's, Hollywood was busy making conspiracy movies on the back of Watergate - All the Presidents Men, Parallax View, 3 Days of the Condor (great spy movie), etc. Even here in the UK we were caught up in it with the first Sweeney! movie. It was a bleak time of paranoia, the mid 70's, and most films reflected that, yet the Bond films steered clear of it with the likes of TMWTGG and TSWLM. Just goes to prove that EON didn't always go with the general mood swing of Hollywood.
You may be on to something there. The two worst-performing Bonds, LTK and TMWTGG were both at odds with their times, for precisely opposite reasons. But a mere three years after TMWTGG, audiences were clearly in the mood for escapist fare again, with TSWLM, Star Wars and Smokey and the Bandit all being huge hits. So don't underestimate how quickly tastes can change. In fact, conventional wisdom states that the reason for Star Wars's phenomenal success is that it appeared at precisely the right time, when the public was sick of doom and gloom after Watergate and Vietnam, and looking to believe in fairytales again.

Was Licence To Kill at odds with its times? I thought it was an attempt to copy the violent 80's action movies.

Every year around Thanksgiving I get in a Bond film mood. I guess it's because there have been so many Bond films that have been released around Thankgiving time, plus in recent years Spike TV had been running Bond marathons.

But a few days after Thanksgiving this year I noticed that I had never felt any desire to watch a Bond film, in fact I never even gave a single thought about any of the Bond films on or around this past Thanksgiving. And I realize that without any question it's because of my disgust with the whole Daniel Craig fiasco.

I've known for a while now that I'm done with Bond as long as Daniel Craig is playing the part. But if the rumors of Craig doing 5 more films is true, then I think I'm done with Bond for good, with the exception of the past DVD's that I already own.

Don't forget that Spike TV has been hardly playing Bond on Thanksgiving. They'll play Bond from 9am to 2pm and then suddenly we're thrown into yet another CSI marathon (which is what Spike does everyday practically) and TNA wrestling.

Bondathon Thanksgiving? They might as well just title it Back to Back to Back because it's hardly a marathon.

BRING BOND BACK ON SUPERSTATION!

Did they even have any of the Bond films on this Thanksgiving? Because now that I think about it, I didn't see one single Bond film on Spike this Thanksgiving when I was flipping through stations.

I wonder if the people at Spike may have cut back on Bond because of Danny boy being the new so-called "Bond?" I know that may not seem likely, but hey, you never know?

Considering the huge success that CR was, I doubt it.

Why would they do that solely because of Craig's casting? Now we're just talking silly. Although I wouldn't be surprised if this is Spike's frustration on losing the TV rights for Casino Royale to USA Network. It's just like Superstation all over again! I remember that channel had the rights for Bond films from DN to LTK but couldn't get the Brosnan films, and they never got aired on cable until Spike bought them.

Finally a series of Bond movies that can be faithful to the spirit of the source material.

As far as adapting to the times? Yes, it's true that movies have been changing -- movies studios have realized that they can spice up action movies with a little more intelligence than they used to, and that they don't need to cram their big budget action movies with all the same pablum like they had been doing. What's unfortunate is that some fans are still frothing at the teet that is unrelenting action and categorically retarded plots.

But then again, there are two sides to every bell curve.

Yeah, whatever. I'm sure when I was in college I would have thought Casino Royale was terribly clever too, particularly if whatever student chick I was trying to impress that week told me it was. One of them actually managed to convince me that Merchant Ivory adaptations of EM Forster novels were the height of sophistication (shudder). Fortunately, I'm older and wiser now and can see through such middlebrow coffee-table pap.

Did you see that bit in CR when Daniel Craig was hanging onto the back of that truck?
