Once upon a time it think it was sort of serious. But I think it was tongue in cheek mostly. At the time of the Civil War many thought of it as the second war of independence.katied wrote:Re: The Southern states feeling mistreated: Southernerners claim that phrases like "The War Of Northern Aggression" are said jokingly, but I'm not so sure.
The aftermath was devastating whole cities were wiped off the map. Sherman's march to the sea reads like eastern European war lords summer vacation.
But today's history books tell us the victorious union army only fought to free the salves. And You can't get a better cause any where in history. But That same army right after 1865 went out across the west in wave of genocide. Continuing such policies in to the early 20th century (Banana Wars too)
Lincoln's policy didn't threaten slavery, his plans to build things up north upset the Southerners that didn't agree with his polices / Yankee shovel read projects (by Yankees for Yankees) and didn't wan their money to go towards it. Hell New York City want to join the succession, but by themselves as a free trade zone, No NY state, no USA.
My affection for the south comes form living here none of my ancestors nor my wife's were part of the war on either side. Most of our ancestors immigrated to the US during the early 20th century and late 19th, a time which hides a whole other untold history of intolerance and ugliness. I believe America is for all, all men created equal is not a slogan it is a promise. Too much of our history is fill with unbelievable intolerance for our fellow man, if you were not accepted locally and had the wrong nationality, accent, color skin, gender America was a cruel place. We are trying to be a place that lives up to "all men created equal" finally.
I love history and look for the real history left behind ignored by state approved text books. If there is a real story behind a historic event in the US I want to know about. And if it turns out to be less than faltering of our ideals I know not to disbelieved it. Part of the hidden history is what happened to the south.
