Unlike the pretentious smart arses we have now, the people who worked on the old Bond films were honoured to be part of the series.
This is true. Not so long ago actors and actresses were actually honored to be in a Bond movie. Jonathan Pryce once famously remarked how "every boy dreams of being a Bond villain, once he realises he is not going to be James Bond himself."
Izabella Scorupco said how she wanted "long dresses and sexy, funky name." You could say this would a "typical" Bond girl which now actresses appearantly don't wanna be. But she DID want that.
Anthony Hopkins, actually signed to play Eliot Carver but dropped three days after because everything was hectic. You could probably ask why this brilliant actor is not hunting Oscar but agrees to play a megalomaniacal villain in a Bond movie. The answer is-not so long being in a (REAL) Bond movie wasn't a shame.
Sophie Marceau,an actress that had some really "serious" roles like in "L'amour braque" which is a modern version of Dostyevsky's "Idiot" said she is happy with being remembered as a Bond girl(although she was both girl and villain) and said she is "happy to be accepted in any British club at all".
Now you have Eva Green saying she accepted the role because they had no one else to play it,Berenice Marlohe,an unknown beauty argues she is not just a Bond girl(honey you were in the movie for two and a half minutes),that black actress says she wants to reinvent Moneypenny(whats bad about being a sectretary in MI6 and flirting with Bond every now and then-plus to work in MI6 you really need to be good at your job) and you have Teri Hatcher from the past,a clearely mediocre-at-best actress saying the role wasn't fullfiling.
I hope her role as a bimbo in "Two and a half men" fullfilled her more. It's hilarious how actresses like Richards and Hatcher talk about "depth" of character.
But to top it all you have Mendes and the rest of the clique saying we should forget everything about James Bond because I guess a movie that can actually be fun and exciting isn't good enough anymore.
They are talking about these movies like they are an equavivalent of "Black Swan" while they are nothing more than mash ups of Bourne,Batman etc. And they are not serious spy thrillers either. You wanna watch a serious spy thriller? Watch "Tinker,Tailor,Soldier,Spy".
Thats a more believeable image of an espionage. not crashing through the walls, falling from trains and glass and having antagonists that seem to know what will happen to them, where they will be taken, where will M be when will Bond be at the exact time so a train can kill him...I
mean really...this is what they are trying to sell as a serious espionage. It's bizzare. Not to mention a head of MI6 with absolutely no protection in a Wayne manor...er,sorry I meant Bond manor.
Sigh...

Saturday Update: Disney reports that Ant-Man bowed to $22.64 million on Friday, not terribly far behind the expected range heading into the weekend. Still, that represents the second lowest opening day in Marvel's Cinematic Universe, leading only 2008's The Incredible Hulk ($21.5 million) and falling about 12 percent short of 2011's Captain America: The First Avenger ($25.7 million), which was the last Marvel pic to open in mid-to-late July. Despite tempered enthusiasm heading into release, early word of mouth appears generally positive with a 92 percent Flixster score (although that is comparable to Avengers: Age of Ultron's 90 percent) after an 80 percent Rotten Tomatoes critics' score. In short, it remains to be seen what kind of legs we can expect from Ant-Man at this point. BoxOffice is projecting a $57.5 million opening weekend..................I knew this Rudd crud would be nothing special.............Mendes can go to hell with his moronic ideas of what Bond films should be and his vision that a hobgoblin should occupy the role is disgraceful. Broccoli has gone along with this premise as well..........

Marvel must be keeping antman modest expectations on purpose , for one thing the number of showtime and theaters is pretty low at least in my area.

Den of Geek reports that it should finish the weekend with about $60 million domestic. Not sure what studio expectations were.

Edited to add: it's about what Box Office Mojo predicted. $60 million is a decent opening for most films, but low for Marvel.

Ant-Man   opened to $58M at the domestic box office, slightly under its projected $60-$65M opening, becoming the 12th film in Marvel's Cinematic Universe to open at #1. On 3,856 screens the film's per screen take was $15,051. It's a good thing that the Paul Rudd superhero film has an "A" CinemaScore as that's the lowest per-screen average of any of the 12 films. Coming in just slightly above Ant-Man is 2008's The Incredible Hulk ($15,810 per) Thor ($16,618) and Captain America: The First Avenger ($17,512).............Universal's Jurassic World   rounded out the weekend's top five with an estimated $11.36 million. In the process, the 3D sci-fi adventure blockbuster sequel became just the fourth film ever to surpass the $600 million domestic mark without adjusting for ticket price inflation. Jurassic World reached the $600 million mark in just 36 days, easily making it the fastest film ever to do so (previous record holder 2009's Avatar reached the mark in 47 days). Jurassic World continues to display strong holding power in its own right, as it was down a very solid 37 percent (especially when considering the new direct competition it faced from Ant-Man). Jurassic World has grossed a massive $611.13 million in 38 days and is now just $12.23 million away from surpassing the $623.36 million final gross of 2012's Marvel's The Avengers to move into third place on the all-time unadjusted domestic list.

I don't think it preformed badly. It's a good opener for a movie I have not see a lot of ads for and to most a unknown character .

But as I said earlier around here there are not a lot of showings . Not like jw, avengers 2, or some others have.

To me, this is the best spy song ever written and performed: The new UNCLE film needs a retro theme song like this one.

Saw Ant-Man. If I must say, I really enjoy it, but I still prefer Ultron.

nobody seems the be asking the same about joss whedon and his take on Wonder Woman. Now we got batfeck and a gloomy dc universe trying to mimic marvels success.

Thing about antman is he's not a well know figure . So it's more important to be relevant to the Marvel universe than correct to the source comic.

The smallest Marvel superhero will also be the smallest box office take.

It opened higher than The Incredible Hulk, so may finish higher too.
