The fact it will be using previously unreleased Fleming material certainly has my attention. I also really like the Foyle's War show that Horowitz created. What does everybody else think?

New Bond Book and Author Announced

This is curious. He was so up set when they turned him down for young Bond he created his own series. The books were decent. Not great. Never touched the young Bond books so there is nothing to compare them too.

I'm a little worried tapping unused material from Ian will backfire.

Mixed is being a bit generous. I personally, thought they were terrible.

The thing that has me puzzled most is why these stories haven't been published already. Fleming always stated he wanted to do another short story collection and his estate could always use the money.

Unfonished works can be tricky. Michael Crichton's unfinished novels were definitely lacking.

Apparently TMWTGG was only an initial draft and it was still published. I really liked that novel, though some of the reviews at the time of publication were critical.

Yes, there were rumours that Kingsley Amis worked on it after Fleming's death, but I think Amis himself denied them. This unseen material is an episode treatment for the unmade Bond TV series, so it will just be a detailed plot synopsis rather than a full manuscript.

The Amis ghost writing theory has indeed been debunked. Fleming wrote at least 13 episode treatments for the failed TV series. For Your Eyes Only, Risico, The Hildebrand Rarity and The Living Daylights were apparently all adapted from these stories, so there must be 9 at the very least floating around at GoldenEye.

Ian Fleming was nothing if not resourceful reusing any scrap of story available. Partly what got him in hot water with Thunderball.

To me Golden Gun is a lesser work even though it had potential it was unpolished. Perhaps a rougher draft than Ian would ordinarily allow to be published.

I get the feeling that half the reason I like TMWTGG so much might result from it being a draft. I liked its pacing, a nice fast read with few boring parts that made it drag. This was the big issue with novels like Goldfinger and DAF for me which could have been faster paced and been the better for it. Other books are like this two with perhaps one too many chapters such as Gryphon Or's ramblings in OHMSS, the drawn out Shrublands part of Thunderball and Bond's trip to that cattle farm and long list of poisons in YOLT.

On Horowitz: A friend of mine who is a total nut for all things Sherlock Holmes said Horrowitz's Sherlock novel The House of Silk was an enjoyable book compared to other continuation Sherlock novels. Fingers crossed he can produce the same for Bond.
