007 Reviewsh: The Worst Bond Film

Post by LordoftheJimmy »

Well if there's a forum to show this video on, it would be this one. Here is my review for the worst James Bond film in the franchise. Which one is it? Well you'll have to watch to find out (although I think you can take a guess):

Great video, LordoftheJimmy. I also think Quantum Of Solace is the worst Bond film for all the reasons you mentioned. Some will say that it's better when you watch it a few times, but even after I gave it a second chance, I still couldn't get into the film. I find Quantum Of Solace difficult to follow not only because of the poor filming, but that it's so dull I can't maintain any interest in what's happening.

Well as I said, when Will and I were rewatching the film for the review, we just couldn't get through the whole thing. It's SOOO Boring! This was my third time watching the film. It's not getting better, it's just getting worse!

By the way, I liked how in the video you poked a bit of fun at the fact some people treat Craig as God-like. It's true, and it also explains why Quantum Of Solace still manages to get review scores that are on par or slightly above some of the older Bond films. Only Craig could get a pass with something like Quantum Of Solace, but if it was any of the former Bond actors on the other hand...

For me the worst is THE WORLD IS NOT ENOUGH. I don't find QOS as horrible as many, but I don't champion it either. I used to rank it around #8 when it first came out but after my last viewing it shot down to #16. Here's my list of ways to have improved the film:

1) Stuart Baird should have edited it. The guy is one of the best in his field (Superman, Lethal Weapon, Casino Royale) and I hope he sticks around for more after Skyfall.

2) Alexander Witt should have did second unit. I cite Casino Royale and Skyfall as obvious examples. Having Dan Bradley do his Bourne-style action was wrong for Bond.

3) Dominic Greene should have been Vesper's Algerian boyfriend. The way the film is, Greene was only a middle man as far as Bond was concerned, as his ultimate goal was finding Yusef and Greene had the information he wanted. Normally with this setup, Greene would have been done by the first act but instead the whole film focused on Greene's scheme so there's a disconnection and the only thing reminding audiences why Bond does what he does is when he looks at a photograph once or twice in the film, which isn't enough. Had Greene been Vesper's boyfriend that would have raised the personal stakes higher for Bond thus make this whole confrontation a lot more interesting and dynamic. What especially hurts is that Bond and Greene barely interact with each other. They only do so in two scenes, one briefly at the party and of course the climax.

4) Having M accuse Bond of murdering a special branch agent and Bond not correcting her was a feeble way of trying to make him go rogue in a Bourne kind of way. What I would have done was simply put Bond in a position where there's no way of contacting HQ and that attempting to would only deviate from the mission where time is crucial and he must put all his effort into stopping the villains. Because he doesn't report back, MI6 assumes he went rogue and considers him a liability, sending commandos to apprehend him.

5) Should have left Shirley Bassey do the song she was recording instead of going for the Jack White/Alicia Keys song. I understand that Sony wanted marketable names instead of an iconic Bond singer, but to hell with marketing potential when it results in a horrible horrible song.

There's probably more I can think of, but I'm too tired.

Finally got a chance to see this, very good. Are you an MST3K/Rifftrax fan, Lordofthejimmy? The humour seems very much in that style.

Good review, glad I missed this one.

Sadly it does sum up a lot of ProCraig arguments. I don't think Criag is evil, he's not a bad man, I don't think he is a good Bond. He can make action movies people will want to see but I rather have my cake and eat it too, in short I want a Bond movie in the tradition sense.

Chief of Staff, 007's gone round the bend. Says someone's been trying to feed him a poisoned banana. Fellow's lost his nerve. Been in the hospital too long. Better call him home.

Thank you so much for that great review video, LordoftheJimmy!

It's always a very good thing when something makes you laugh so hard that it brings tears to your eyes as your review did for me.
I always thought that Charles K. Feldman's Casino Royale (1967) "Bond spoof" was the worst that it could get, but QOS actually did scrap the bottom of the barrel in practically every department. Both of these films are elephantine disasters that make the moronic Moonraker and the tepid A View To A Kill look better and better all the time, eh.

I agree and I would add that Craig is a total failure as Bond and this terrible bit of casting makes me :cuss:

Unfortunately though, the general public will still be considering DC to be a classic Bond even after he retires so James Bond can be anyone these days.

That was the basic idea behind this review is the absurdity of the Daniel Craig phenomenon. What was interesting was that I was trying to get people on other forums to suggest positive views of the film for the other character to say, and NOBODY, I mean nobody offered any words at all! But of course, the minute I put this review up, it's like "Oh you're completely wrong about this film and here's why... blah blah blah." "A little late buddy!" Oh well...
stockslivevan wrote:For me the worst is THE WORLD IS NOT ENOUGH.
Awww, I actually like that film. You do bring up some good points for how to strengthen the film, but I think the whole film should have been aborted. We didn't need a sequel to CASINO ROYALE, it was great the way it was. Just make another movie!
Kristatos wrote:Are you an MST3K/Rifftrax fan, Lordofthejimmy?
No, but funny enough my dad used to do a show in San Diego called Disasterpiece Theatre (It's on YouTube) way before MYSTERY SCIENCE THEATER, where they would show the worst movies of all time and do sketches in-between. The MST3K guys probably ripped him off, but my dad's show is where I got a lot of ideas from... that and the Nostalgia Critic (we mention that in the review).
Dr. No wrote:I don't think Criag is evil, he's not a bad man, I don't think he is a good Bond.
Exactly! Craig is a fine actor, he's just not James Bond. He has his moments, and as Timothy Dalton was the man for LICENSE TO KILL, Craig was the man for CASINO ROYALE. But apart from that film, he's just a borefest in the role.
Emilio Largo wrote:Thank you so much for that great review video, LordoftheJimmy!
You're welcome! I don't consider 67 CASINO ROYALE in the same category with these other Bonds, it was REALLY bad, but I'd rather watch MOONRAKER or A VIEW TO A KILL anytime over QUANTUM. At least those movies don't take themselves too seriously. It's really the pretentiousness of QUANTUM that I hate most of all.

I don't think so. Remember back in the 90s when Pierce Brosnan was the greatest Bond of them all and people were saying he was better than Connery? Well things seemed to have really changed by now. Daniel Craig will make a really bad bond film at the end of his career and everyone will say "Oh he was the worst Bond ever! (Whoever takes over afterwards) is the best James Bond!" And round and round we go.
