I have to admit, when I first heard about his resignation, I thought he was doing the honourable thing and saying "the buck stops here". I was rather disappointed when he cited health concerns as his reason for stepping down, though a Catholic friend of mine made a good point that if he had stepped down over the sex abuse scandal, it might set a precedent whereby future popes are routinely pressured to resign by people hungry for power, like in the middle ages.

RIP Richard Briers. Here's one of my earliest memories of him (or at least his voice).

He will be missed.

Last time I saw him he was on Midsomer Murders as the killer (recently re-watched Death's Shadow ), althou I believe he was in Torchwood, Marple, and New Tricks as well. In an interview he mention how sad it was Paul Eddington passed the way he did, it gave me a wonderful impression of Richard as a good man who still missed a good friend all those years on, enough to bring it up and honour his fiends memory many years later.

The Carnival Triumph thing makes me think seriously about whether I want to continue cruising. Not because I don't feel safe, but just because of how upset people get about it-there's people defending Carnival, and other people who hope that this situation causes Carnival to crash and burn.

How much do they make on these cruises , some were talking like it was under $400 for a four day cruse. Doesn't seem like a lot of money.

You get what you pay for...3-4 day cruises just don't interest me.

I've looked at Carnival's website-they claim to have prices that are pretty reasonable, but when you look at their website, they're not at all.Plus some of their ships are older(I know some of the older cruise ships other lines tend to have issues with a/c and plumbing. If i'm going to be on a cruise ship for a week, I want everything working.Yes, there are public bathrooms, but who wants to get up in the middle of the night and go to the public bathrooms on the Promenade deck?)

Well, I'm not going to say I'm happy about Hugo Chavez dying, but he hadn't been in the best of health so it wasn't so surprising.

It's customary when someone dies to focus on their positive qualities. A little ironic in Chavez's case though, since as Bertrand Russell said of Thomas Paine, "Like all men, he had his flaws, but it was for his virtues that he was hated."

He wasn't Saddam Hussein, still undeniably he had a horrible record on human rights. A part from being a leftist he really does not have a redeemable legacy, I say being a leftist because it seem to be what meida figures and actors seem to care about.

We do have bad record in south America from the 19th century policies and banana wars of teh early 20th and then the interventionist action from the 50s to present day so I get why many would rally around his antiamerican message, doesn't change the fact Chavez was as crazy as a fruit bat and horrible human being, I don't say smear him but at least admit the truth about a guy who amassed a massive private fortune off the backs of his people while his people were starving.

While I'm on a libertarian rant what it the people with the white house / congress making a law/rule that drones can not be used to execute/kill American citizen on American soil. The was Bush and Obama use Drones is very scary, we need to be revisiting and cracking down on how they are used over seas and not bringing them here, and why are we brinign htme here I believe it is now ganing traction from Big Drone :) I do mean that just a hint of wink, I;ve not heard any one say why are drones being pushed now, I believe the answer is the Dron manufactures want to open up a new market, here. So our politicians are firmly in the pocket of a special interest, one that we the people pay for.

Oh my answer for obamas flub of Trek and star wars is he was about to say Jedi Mind Trick and caught himself, flubbed it on purpose because the pres for using mind trick would eb worse then lookin dumb.

end rant:\

Falklands referendum: Voters choose to remain UK territory

The people of the Falkland Islands have voted overwhelmingly in favour of remaining a UK overseas territory.

Of 1,517 votes cast in the two-day referendum - on a turnout of more than 90% - 1,513 were in favour, while just three votes were against.

It follows pressure from Argentina over its claims to the islands, 31 years after the Falklands War with the UK.

The UK government welcomed the result and urged "all countries" to accept it and respect the islanders' wishes.

The referendum had asked: "Do you wish the Falkland Islands to retain their current political status as an Overseas Territory of the United Kingdom?"

First Latin American pope

Post by Goldeneye »

First Latin American pope 'very exciting,' faithful say
By Catherine E. Shoichet and Mariano Castillo, CNN
http://www.cnn.com/2013/03/13/world/ame ... index.html
(CNN) -- Word of the election of the Roman Catholic Church's first Latin American pope quickly spread through the region.

With its approximately 480 million adherents, Latin America is home to an overwhelming plurality of the world's Catholics, but no one from the region (or hemisphere, for that matter) has been ever been chosen to lead the church as pope.

The announcement that Argentinian Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio would become the new pontiff changed that. Bergoglio, who chose the name Pope Francis, was the archbishop of Buenos Aires. He is 76.

"I am truly still very surprised ... not just that a Latino pope came out, but that he is an Argentinian from Buenos Aires," the Rev. Eduardo Mangiarotti told CNN en Español.

New pope adopts the name Francis
Latin American catholics: So proud, happy

In St. Peter's Square, a woman from Ciudad Juarez, Mexico, told CNN's Anderson Cooper she was thrilled by the news.

"As a youth, and as a Catholic student, and as a Mexican, I am absolutely overwhelmed with emotion (at) the fact that we have a new pope that will represent that part of the (world). ... That is something very exciting. I feel that Mexico has been a country that has suffered a lot, and so has Latin America, but it is a people that has always put trust in God, so it is absolutely wonderful to represent our part of the world this time around."

Beside her, a woman from Mexico City said her heart jumped when she heard the announcement that a pope had been picked.

A look at the life of Cardinal Bergoglio

"I'm so excited," she said. "It's a reason of being proud tonight, because Latin America is a very important Catholic area and now it's going to be totally represented here, so I'm so proud and I'm so happy today. ... It's going to help a lot, a Latin American pope, it's going to help. It's going to rebuild many things, and it's a new start."

Within hours of the announcement, Argentinian President Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner sent a letter congratulating to the new pope.

And Mexico's Catholic bishops released a statement praising the news.

"For the churches that are pilgrims in Latin America, it is the cause of great joy," the statement said. "For the Mexican church, it is a clear sign of love for the churches that are pilgrims in these lands."

Before Wednesday's announcement, speculation had surged that the church might select its first non-European pope of the modern era.

What's in a name?

"It would be an enormous gesture to name a Latin American pope," Virginia Garrard-Burnett, a professor of history and religious studies at the University of Texas at Austin, said earlier this week.

Precisely because Catholicism is losing ground in the region, a pope from there could be a boost for the faith, she said.

About 39% of all Catholics live in Latin America, according to the Pew Forum on Religion & Public Life.

The new Pope story has been getting a lot of coverage where I live. We have a large Hispanic community in San Diego, and a Latin American Pope is a HUGE deal.

Anyone who was in Rome Tuesday has a story to tell now! That would have been awesome-you come to Rome for a pilgrimage-or just for a vacation-and you're there when they elect a new Pope! I'm amazed that there were so many people in St. Peter's Square because they kept mentioning how cold and rainy it was . Not long after the white smoke it let up. Divine intervention? You have to wonder!

We are not Catholic but have family members who are devout Catholics and they are thrilled with the new pope. For our part in as much as it is our right to comment on this not being cahtolics we like the new guy alot, he has a great sotry and my wife thinks he has the peace of teh lord about him, watching him I agree I know it sounds corny but from what we've seen of him he does to have something special about him.
Like the dalai lama, he has something special about him as well.

I hope the new pope will be a good leader, John Paul II had a mission and accomplished it, this new pope seems to have a humble earnestness about him that could reinvigorate the church.
