Sir Roger Moore praises Daniel (again) in new book.

Post by Blowfeld »

Sir Rig isn't one to name call he has always had a kind word for all the Bond actors after him.
Sir Roger Moore says Daniel Craig has "the best acting and the best build" of any actor to play James Bond.

Sir Roger brought a touch of humour to the seven Bond films he starred in from 1973-1985, an element he suggested was lacking in the last film, Quantum of Solace.

Craig’s third Bond film is released later this year and Sir Roger said: “I believe that Skyfall is going to have a lot more humour in it than Quantum of Solace did, something I’ll be pleased to see.

“Of course, we had executives breathing down our necks when I was playing [Bond], but I never took them seriously. In fact, I don’t think I took anything seriously. Except making sure I got paid on Friday.”

Recalling his years as Bond, the veteran actor said: “Back then I could leap out of a chair without fear of my knees cracking; could chew a toffee without fear of losing a tooth; could admire my flowing locks and my bronzed, slim torso.

“With a twitch of the old eyebrow I set pulses racing across the world, they say. These days it’s my pacemaker that keeps my pulse racing.”

In the book, serialised in a Sunday newspaper, Sir Roger said that Desmond Llewelyn had little in common with Q, the gadgetmaster he played for 36 years “Off screen, Desmond was a complete technophobe who struggled to operate his own video recorder," he said.

""I loved Casino Royale and Daniel Craig. He is a wonderful actor, certainly the best actor to play Bond," Moore wrote in the latest edition of his book Bond on Bond.

"I have never been guilty of method acting, or even acting if you want to argue a point."

He added that Craig has "the best build of any Bond".

Sir Roger Moore says Daniel Craig has “the best acting and the best build” of any actor to play James Bond.

For a generation reared on the James Bond films of the 1970s, Sir Roger Moore remains the finest 007. Sir Roger, however, disagrees. The 84-year-old has hailed Daniel Craig as the best actor ever to play Bond.

Sir Roger is very kind; the only people I have read him criticise are Jean Claude Van Damme and the producer on The Quest and David Nivens's wife near the end of Niven's life.

Some interesting comments on the Telegraph article:

"You do not need to be an actor to play Bond, but Craig lacks the ability to play anyone. I have been watching him since he was in "Our friends in the North", and am amazed that he ever got any other parts after that, let alone major films. His performance in the western with Harrison Ford would make John Wayne look graceful - he cannot even walk well".

"However.. I'm not sure he can possibly mean what he says here, he's far to shrewd. For a start as nicely chiselled as Mr Craig is he looks more like a Chippendale than any Bond, is too wooden as much in his movement as his delivery. He can't walk properly, without looking self-conscious, can't run without stepping out of character - he's too tight - pouts like a duck all the time and can't deliver a throw away line to save his life; good job its only film then. His timing on those crucial drop dead lines is dreadful as is the way he does it".

When it's negative (Lazamby about Craig), it's sincere, and when it's positive (Roger Moore, Richard Kiel, Michelle Yeoh), you have always something to say !

Pathetic !

There's also many fans of Daniel Craig that constantly bash Roger Moore on the forums, but then suddenly shower him with praise whenever he says something positive about Craig. In a book titled James Bond The Legacy, there's a picture of Moore standing alongside Brosnan on the set of GoldenEye with a quote from Moore that says: "Both Sean Connery and I will be forgotten after everybody sees Pierce." The truth is, Roger Moore is a very kind gentleman who rarely criticizes anyone. The only criticisms related to Bond that I've personally heard him give were towards Die Another Day and Quantum Of Solace.

Plus, it's much riskier to criticise someone than it is to praise them. That's probably why the most outspoken criticisms have come from people who are mostly retired ("has-beens", in Craigski parlance), and have little to lose by speaking their minds.

I can't imagine Richard Kiel criticising anyone, he seems such a nice man.

I believe we covered this when it was new.

It is easier to talk bad about old bosses, I'd never blast the new guy to take on a job I formerly had. That said I'm sure most of the former Bond crew get a nice check once once or twice a year for their work on Bond. How do you blast the people who gave you a break especially if you're a small fry in the business. Unless you're Sean Connery most will never think twice about it. Sean took EON to court over money and deliberately threw it back in their face by making a non EON Bond. However I don't think he'd ever hurt the career of a fellow actor.
